Is this New Calvinism less Calvin centered than before? Is it more Christ centered and less man centered...but why should this new doctrine be better? Is it because the new generation has changed radically?
I was a Calvinist before I knew the term even existed. I saw these great and mighty truths in scripture. It wasn't until I was challenged by an Ariminian view, of which I adamantly disagreed with, that I sought out what others were saying. I agree with Charles Spurgeon when he said: "Calvinism is simply a nickname for biblical Christianity." If we are honest with ourselves, I believe, we will all see these truths, called Calvinism, in Scripture. ALL the puritans did. The american Pilgrims and soooo many more. It's something to think about.
Carl Copsey The problem here isn't how you call this doctrine but why it must be a NEW one, since the Gospel is not supposed to change at all...this is the "bite & switch" fallacy by using the word Calvinism and switching for what the Gospel means, Apealing to the majority is an other fallacy, because sometimes the majority is wrong, see what Germany agreed to do in WW2. So, my point is not to focus on an Arminian view either but to why is a necesity to have a new Calvinism, which is sectarising christians.
So, I'm a little confused by the wording Pastor Piper. Is he saying that he agrees with abortion and same-same marriage when he says "affirms" the culture?? Does this "New Calvinism" include charismatics like Bethel Church in California, Morning Star in South Carolina, Jesus Culture with their calling down fire and experiential-based?? I wouldn't think Pastor Piper would Biblically agree with these thing, but the way he said it all has me baffled. PLEASE help me understand this!!
No. He wouldn't agree with those things. He has explicitly preached against abortion and so called same-sex marriage for years. Within the Dutch Reformed tradition, there has always been a sense of necessary cultural engagement. I took Piper to be affirming something similar.
Yes, but not all. Some calvinists even in the past rejected double predestination in favor of single predestination. Bullinger wrote to Calvin and repudiated Calvin's doctrine of double predestination. Still unconditional election is something all calvinists agree on, regardless whether it is single or double. Same thing on the atonement, many calvinists subscribe to an unlimited atonement, Calvin himself if you read his commentary on John 3:16 and John 1:29 subscribed to an unlimited atonement. This is why most calvinists do not have an issue with lutherans, since lutherans are not synergists and subscribe to unconditional election so they can be viewed as moderate calvinists. Let's remeber that Luther and Calvin only disagreed on the real presence versus a spiritual presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper, for Lutherans the bread is the actual body of Christ and the wine is the actual blood of Christ while for Calvinists they symbolize the body and blood of Christ.
Gospel over every area except politics. They wanna engage culture, but not provide gospel answers to the political questions of the day. I sense a double standard in the movement.
Actually they do. Obviously John didn't mention ALL the features. I consider myself a part of this movement. There are many interesting articles. I would recommend a google search. :)
Carl Copsey OK. Then help me, please. This sounds like Baptist Lite?? This is the first time I've heard of this. And since I'm still a recovering southern baptist...this naturally sounds sketchy. maybe it's only my own preconceived ideas??? also...more envolved in Books? I'll keep my peace on this until I've heard or read more explanation. thank you!

But i assure, I am convinced, just as the great Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon who said, "Calvinism is simply a nickname for Biblical Christianity." Unfortunately Calvin was wrong on all 5 of his tulips points !! ALL wrong !! So the new Calvinism is by default not a God sent movement !! So one must assume it is from the devil !! Unfortunately !!
Id rather read the bible . These guy's where popular and may have lead people to Christ, but that doesn't make them Apostles. Id rather follow what the apostles teach and they dont teach total depravity (Job was a righteous before God ), unconditional election ( Free will), limited atonement (Jesus died for ALL ) , irresistible grace ( and free will) and or perseverance of the Saint ( Those that persevere WILL be saved).
