Welcome to Part 5 in my 10 part series on the original works of David Lynch! These videos will discuss the themes of Lynch's original works, starting with Eraserhead and ending finally with Twin Peaks: The Return.
In this installment of The Postmodern Condition, we discuss the Twin Peaks prequel film, Fire Walk With Me. This installment has been split into 4 parts due to technical limitations. This video will include SPOILERS for Fire Walk With Me, the original Twin Peaks show, Twin Peaks: The Return, and there may be occasional spoilers for other Lynch films in the mix.
We return to Fire Walk With Me to discuss Electricity and The Jade Ring, and what they represent in the narrative and themes of the series. We also discuss the spirits that appear in Fire Walk With Me and how they relate to broader themes of Capitalism, Colonialism, and Environmentalism.

An interesting fact about TV static: the form of static is given due to it being a physical form of the background radiation originating from the big bang

OMFG, the whole postmodern condition part blew my mind, especially the last part, you basically explained the "Dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream" thing. There's something insane about how fictional realities are affecting reality intentionaly or not, fake news, larping, otherkin, obsesive and almost cultish fandoms. I feel like an insane person but there's something akin to 'memetic hazardous' stuff with this fictional narratives that people just pour themselves wholely into, just look at Q anon! might as well be the biggest ARG ever I feel like i'm schizoposting at this point so I might aswell share this, I have this theory about how there's this like "acceleration of weirdness" happening, which I relate a lot to what malmrose says about how this modern spirits manifest more and more as things get worse. The idea is that, as more of our lifes are spent experiencing the world thru screens, and it's been seen that algorithms have a tendency to show people more and more niche and weird, attention grabbing, often violent content, this would create a sense that that's how the world is, in a sort of kuleshov effect while scrolling and goign quickly from memes, horrible catastrophes, someone traumaposting, somebody's cat, a gofundme, news about the latest weird shit and a constant flow of more and more and more, just INFINITE CONTENT, the digital reflection of the real world that is social media becomes the entirety of reality for the terminally online individual, this affecting them in a change of behaviour according to the world they feel themselves enhabiting, and perpetuating the cycle of weirdness, I think the concept of hyperstition is important here but I haven't read much about it yet. If one sees memes as not just funny images but as cultural expressions of the current times, another mirror to the way people are feeling and seeing the contemporary world, then things such as the "touch grass" meme show that unconsciously we recognize this "mind virus" of sorts (a silent pandemic that became more visible and exacerbated by the covid pandemic). It's interesting then, how another online memetic hazard, political identity and a lot of it's communities, are dealing with this by looking not how to stop the world from ending but to try to imagine what could come after, but still in a sort of escapist way, daydreaming before the end. sorry for bad english.

Wow I loved ur point about post modern condition and how colonial and capitalist factors all lead up to Laura's death and how she is not the first victim of this. I think it's also interesting to note if u haven't already in the previous series analysis that she was killed in an abandoned train carriage a symbol of colonial expansion being the railroad but also it being abandoned representing the planned neglect and obsolescence of the railway in favour of the car. I love how ur videos encourage new thoughts in us viewers as well thank u for bringing so much to light for me!

Chairs, electricity, roads at night...as you point out, there is a lot of Lost Highway symbolism in The Return. If at least one of the TP stories is about a guy named Richard, (maybe he's the star of the hit show Odessa), this leads to a shocking new interpretation of the end of FWWM. As Tim Kreider puts it, Richard constructs an elaborate dreamworld from the parts of his waking life to cover up what he's done, (the mechanical white horse, for example, is right outside Judy's cafe, which sort of resembles the waiting room). All the content around his motel room, such as the evolution of the arm light right outside it, may be important clues. As he's waiting to be electrocuted (in the spirit of I'm Thinking of Ending Things, The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, and Lost Highway) he is imagining himself as Dale Cooper saving Laura Palmer, and taking her home. In FWWM, they are together at the end, with flashing lights, and laughing. In the Return, they are together at the end, with flashing lights, and screaming. Dale is also Leland-a jump cut in part 17 almost confirms this. This may be why Laura screams when she sees him in the woods. He's her rapist. Therefore, when Richard/Leland is with Laura watching the TV or seeing her Angel and laughing/crying at the end of FWWM, it's Richard/Leland finally being electrocuted. The various flashing lights that intrude into the story, just like in Lost Highway, are signs that the electrocution has started, and at the end very, it's lights out. (Fred Madison's head morphs into something from the Elephant Man, complicating such an easy interpretation, but you get the idea: the end of FWWM is someone getting electrocuted. Now that I think about it, maybe Laura killed someone, and she's the one on the chair...)

One idea I had for the Jade Ring is that the people who wear it are wedding: themselves to The Arm; making a pact to protect them from being taken over by Bob, ironically through another "marriage," so it seems at first protective but I think it's like a baited hook. The man offering protection comes with a cost. I think Laura putting on the ring before her death is what put her in the position to be the star of the show. She is protected from being taken by Bob but instead becomes the Laura Palmer from the television show, as opposed to the Laura Palmer of Fire Walk with Me. Other characters who find the ring are similarly drawn in to the spectacle of the show, becoming parts of it. Essentially rescued from Bob only to become the source of (pain and sorrow) for the Arm and the audience. It also really makes me think of how like shows and true crime exploit very real suffering in order to entertain.

I understand your criticism of Twin Perfect's dissection of what he thought Lynch was saying via what was in the text of Twin Peaks, but I do think both of you are correct in a "yes, and" sense. It very much is a 'competing narrative' of (meta-)philosophies, and one can very much inform and add context to the other.

another interesting thing about tv static is it is literally remnants from the Big Bang the creation of the universe. I like hwatbu say about the good and bad ways that electricity is used but I also think that is kind of the nature of the universe itself the creation of the universe was a source of good and bad and manifests itself in every conceivable way. The nature of our entire universe fits within this idea of electricity

I think the ring represents the arm marrying the wearer to himself. He says “with this ring I thee wed,” but not to who. To him. I think he represents manipulation, as he always is manipulating character motivations and sometimes manipulating reality at his will. I think by marrying manipulation, Laura takes a similar path to Albert when confronted with the violent sheriff Truman, a path of non-violence but instead employment of manipulative tactics to solve conflict. She marries her story to manipulation forever, as she lived many double lives, rather than violence when she refuses bob’s possession. Nixon wore the ring in the canon book and then married his story to manipulation forever with watergate rather than employing violence to silence the press. I reeeeeally think this is what the ring is, if you look at different characters who wear the ring they are all “married” to the concept of manipulation in their life stories. Check it out with different characters, Teresa banks, Douglas Milford, all of them known for a manipulative event rather than violent ones, as they finished their plots by marrying themselves to this manipulative nature. Also mike is selling what originally? Shoes…like the shoes from dougie teleporting…souls…selling your soul…manipulation. I know this is poorly composed but the thoughts I’ve been collecting personally on my theories are making too much sense it’s hurting my brain.

As for the left arm, are you familiar with the term "hysterical paralysis"? An example from the book Introduction to Psychotherapy by the analysts Pedder and Brown: a young woman presents with loss of strength in her left arm. She had gotten so angry with her therapist during group therapy that she wanted to hit him, but she hadn't dared express her anger. The loss of strength would be some sort of compromise between her conflicting desires to hit and keep quiet. Another example: a victim of a horrific and violent rape lost all strength in her left leg after this trauma. However, extensive physical examination revealed nothing abnormal. It turns out that about seventy to eighty percent of hysterical paralysis affects the left side of the body. This fits nicely with the fact that the right hemisphere of the brain (which moves the left arm or leg) is primarily responsible for autobiographical memory. The personal memories seem to be related to the hysterical paralysis. PS: For example, motor system inhibition prevents us from hurting ourselves during a wild dream. We are then safe and paralyzed in bed.

Great video as always! Love these analyses of themes. Just a headsup though, at several times in the video you place a cut before you end a sentence. Often it's just losing half a word which loses the rythm of the video but is understandable, but at 39:10 the sentence goes "particularly that the 50s was" and then a premature cut, so I really don't know what the 50s was ;P

Lynch seems to draw attention to the sound of wind a lot, and the fan generates artificial wind. We know Leland doesn't activate it to disguise the noise of the abuse (because the fan is very quiet and Sarah is drugged unconscious). When Laura hears the fan being activated, she seems to react to it like she knows something bad is going to happen - yet she does not know it's Leland's body doing it until she breaks through the spell. Bob even comes through the window, not the door.
