Using they or them to refer to an individual is sometimes acceptable in the English language. But it usually implies unfamiliarity or that the individual is anonymous. The problem Conservatives have is the policing of other people's language, and the utilisation of the state or social media to enforce it. Especially given the majority of people on this planet believe that gender and sex are synonymous terms, and that it's rooted in biology which is an inescapable reality. Choosing your own pronouns is as ridiculous as getting to choose your own adjectives.
