If you ask any red blooded Japanese native about people trying aspects of their culture, they will all tell you they see it as a sign of respect and an attempt at understanding them. They LIKE it when you do it. They will even help you figure things out if you don't know. Nobita in Japan did a very good video on this awhile back. I forgot the title but just look up Nobita, Japan, cultural appropriation. Nobita is an English speaking Japanese native that does man/woman on the street interviews with zoomer and millennial men and women. Also Rev, Elon has always been a huge weeb. What always makes me both laugh and shake my head is when you have these twitter screechers getting up in arms about something, especially when it pertains to Japanese culture, and when actual Japanese people say "This isn't an issue, stop talking about it", they get told that their opinion doesn't matter. A number of years ago when twitter idiots were whinging about the little white girl who did a Japanese tea ceremony for her friends, I and a bunch of other Japanese people said it was totally fine, and that we were happy people were learning more about our culture. it's not really illegal in the UK, my guess is they called it grossly offensive and used that as a excuse to punish him. They pretty much use vague laws all the time so they can punish whoever the f they want for bs reasons all the time.

I’m from the UK and am not a fan of lolicon stuff, but I still find it ridiculous that people can get arrested for it. Someone getting their rocks off to petite, cutesy cartoon characters may be weird, but there’s no evidence to suggest that doing so makes them capable of child abuse. People who are against lolicon always make really flawed arguments and in many cases have been exposed as hypocrites, sometimes even being abusers themselves. That British soldier seems like a pretty good guy from what I read in the article. It’s messed up that he got arrested over drawings of fictional characters while actual child predators are allowed to run free.

It felt like the entire society is going more and more extreme and sensitive to everything. It's like they are afraid of interact with others and push them as far away as possible.

I've heard many, many Japanese people's (actual JP people, in Japanese) say that they think it is cool that their culture is being acknowledged worldwide. Even JP Vtubers like Korone and the like have mentioned ''It's so cool that overseas people know part of my culture too!'' (paraphrased, but quite close to literal). I wouldn't worry about anyone telling you you can't if 1) it's not a bad thing in the first place, 2) even JP people are saying it is okay & they think it's really cool that people know say references to JoJo, to Kenshiro and to say Dragonball Z (anime, moe culture in general, but also other things Japanese). Japanese don't care about you CELEBRATING & VALUEING their culture. Honestly, if someone were to ''culturally appropriate'' Dutch culture and started wearing like a milk maid outfit with clogs and have tulips in his / her hands I'm like ''Looks good!'' (if it just resembles actual milk maids from days past; obviously I am full-blooded Dutch for me to be saying this). I would love it, as a Dutchman, if people were to be openly excited about say the most notable of Dutch culture and history: the Grand Masters of Painting - van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, etc. Hell, I saw a van Gogh reference in Jojo P6 and I thought that was extremely awesome! Are you kidding me? You think THAT'S offensive? I love the fact that they celebrate my cultural heritage. I love van Gogh's art, Rembrandt's art, Vermeer's art, and the other Masters of old. The thing is, VTubing started out ln Japan, and AFAIK, the majority of VTubers are still Japanese. Mori Calliope is a Japanese character, created by Japanese artists, played by a Western actress that moved to Japan. VShojo and the other Western VTubers that popped up just saw the concept, loved it, and wanted to try it for themselves. You can't even say that their characters are Anime characters, just Anime inspired, since most of them don't claim to be part of the Japanese culture. And those that do, like Sivervale, do their homework. Personally, I can't wait for some Twitter freak to call Ironmouse a "white VTuber". I'd love to hear her cuss them out in Puerto Rican. 🤣

Yea, I never understood why people want more representation in anime. Like, they aren't in America where there is a plethora of every race so it's realistic to expect to see a black bakery owner, a white lawyer, an asian teacher, and so much more. Japan, to my knowledge, is pretty much all just Japanese Asian minus those niche people who decided to move to Japan and those are few and far between from the actual population size I imagine. Also, Dragon Ball does have a black character, Piccolo was claimed by Zyx_ in a Lythero video.

I actually remember seeing a Twitter thread related to "cancelling" Calli using her IRL stuff, and one of the points being made was that she was "appropriating Asian culture" by being a v-tuber. To say the least, it definitely was a reach but the OP kept doubling down on this opinion despite the fact that: A. people told them that she was employed by a Japanese company, but the OP didn't care and B. they didn't give any actual examples of what they accused Calli of doing. So yeah, not the first time Calli was accused of appropriating Japanese culture, but still a stupid point.

It's progress and the styles of content creators tend to use different techniques. The types of videos are: -Mascot content creator. Use of a single or few still images of the channel's OC throughout the video. -PNG content creator. Use of multiple art pieces of the channel's OC to give different emotions and make it seem more like a comic of sorts. -2d Vtuber. Much more expressive and interactive with the video or stream. Starts to actually have a fully developed character that can be enjoyed like a show or in game one. Japan does a lot of animation, creativity, and quality art so this was bound to start from here. -3d Vtuber. This is the final step and it's to create depth and achieve deeper interaction with virtual objects. Some might not like this type of art, but it opens up different interactivity.

Perhaps the funniest thing about the Ben & Gwen kissing tweet, is that the characters were originally intended to be boyfriend & girlfriend, not cousins. However, they were considered too young for romantic relationships in the first season and, therefor, changed to be related to justify them being there together on a summer long road trip. The tweet, whether intentional or not, is a lowkey reference to the shows original plot before it was changed. Could also be a reference to the shows most popular ship given that most other romantic interests were often short lived, one-sided or at most only flirtatious. Since they're the two leading characters they're the most obvious pairing for that sort of thing. The first series also had the most iconic artstyle & character designs.

Let's not forget that the same people claiming to be "defending Japanese culture" by attacking Calliope Mori and other V-Tubers, are also the very same people who try to "fix" the artwork posted by Japanese artists...

Mori Calliope is simply having fun. I've been a deadbeat for her since last year and she's gotten me through some dark times. She speaks to me in her music and I love her streams, she just seems like a radical woman to hang out with. That's what matters, no matter her background, is that she has people who accept her for who she is. Certainly more mature than what Twitter has to say.

There is a difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation: Cultural appreciation is attempting to genuinely recreate a different culture to the best of one's abilities using local resources. Cultural appropriation is warping a different culture beyond recognition to fit the sensibilities of one's own culture. Most vtubers fall squarely into appreciation. People that say an entire language is offensive falls under appropriation.

My motto is if "Twitter" dislikes something, I automatically assume it's good.

I think vtubing actually falls more under internet culture than any specific nation. Idolvtubers(Hololive, Nijisanji, Kawaii, etc...) are just a Japanese iteration of that internet culture.
