But throwing at Happ was intentional because the Cardinals are notorious and have a long history of pulling "keepers of the game" BS like that.They have been doing it since Tony LaRussa became their manager and every manager after it has done the same. @@chriskay1449 there’s people in this comment section who believe he did it on purpose, only reason I said that. Not saying it was right, but back in the 60’s and 70’s if you miffed a pitcher, you better look out. Three consecutive HRs, the next batter better get ready to duck! @cw9282
@cw9282 19 дней назад
@@bkleimann The problem is the pitcher intentionally threw the ball at the batter for no reason. Before you say it was retaliation for hitting Contreras, it was obvious that Contreras was getting too near to the batter to frame the pitch, and ended up getting hit by the bat. So that's Contreras's fault. So basically, the pitcher had no reason at all to throw a ball at the batter. Good call in booting him.
@bkleimann
@bkleimann 19 дней назад
@cw9282 I wasn't saying it wasn't intentional. It clearly was, but it also wasn't a pitch that was aimed at hurting the batter either. It was a clear old school move. If he had thrown a heater, may have been a different story.

Not a lot of good things to say about the umps this season, but they got it dead on right here. The back swing was clearly unintentional, neither team seemed to think it was and there was no tension between the two teams. Then suddenly the pitcher throws at a hitter twice trying to create something. Good to see them shut that down right away, no place for that. It was an easy call so hard not too, but even those have slipped by umps this season.

This was clear intention. When Happ hit Contreras, Happ went to check up on Contreras. No warning needed there, since Happ's swing was legal and Happ showed remorse after hitting Contreras. Then the next pitches, Mikolas aimed for Happ's head-neck area (And almost hit him there) and then he even made an intentional movement to hit Happ. I get it that there should've been a warning after the head-neck area miss, but if it didn't hit him, then what's the warning for? That was intentional and lead to a *JUSTIFIED EJECTION* No doubter on that. Edit: Umpires did their job correctly. Intentionally hitting a batter COULD lead to ejection.

You want on purpose, how about Chase Utley who deliberately slid into Ruben Tejada in Game 2 of the 2015 NLDS when he tried to break up a double play. That was in purpose, with malicious intent. Now, th3 next game, Noah "Thor" Syndegard plunked Utley in the first inning, and he got ejected. He knew, and the Umps knew that it was payback, and that's why they ejected him. Don't get me wrong, umps have made some bad ejection calls, but this one was correct. You just open up your entire team to get hit and possibly injured. Happ and Contreras hugged it out. How so? The Cardinals have good offense yet terrible pitching. The Cubs, right now are back at .500 and have the lead the league in some stats. Also, last year, the Cubs also had the best record after the All Star break. Plus, the Cubs are thr only team in the NL Central with a positive run differential.

That’s been happening a lot it seems. Could it be because players are taller now? I don’t know. But if you’re going to hit a batter with a pitch, at least throw it more than 40mph.

huge cardinals fan but cardinals have NO position to retaliate for any reason on other teams period. They are struggling so badly they cannot afford any ejections especially the few decent starters they even have. What a dumpster fire, all of management needs to go.

MLB batter just can't lazily keep his arm extended like that and deserved to get drilled. Catcher should probably not be so close to the plate also. But no, batter is being inconsiderate and dangerous casually letting his backswing rotate so much behind him. I'm surprised most catchers don't get injured this way, because it's fairly common for a mediocre hitter to do this.

Cards announcers don't have any "feel for the game". The HBP was clearly intentional, and Mikolas more or less admitted it afterward. In the old days the umpires would let this sh*# go until there was a full-on brawl. I guess that's what they mean by "feel for the game."

"The Cardinals will be allowed to stitch him up and get him back in the game, I would assume". Uh, no Chip. I know you're new to baseball but a player is never allowed to be reinserted once they leave. unreal. what a clown.

Happ did not do that intentionally. These guys played together for years on the Cubs. This pitcher deserves a 10 game suspension. I am not even a CUB FAN( WHITE SOXS FAN). BUT, THIS IS WRONG.

It's really annoying when baseball commentators start saying things like "Have a feel for the game" about a HBP. Unwritten rules are unwritten because anyone who tried to write them down would feel really stupid trying to justify the reasoning why players do these things. Only in Mikolas' head, did he think this was the appropriate course of action.
