im sure the owner is thinking dang it I should have checked the wiring,,, with issues like this, a broken wire seems to be the culprit about 75 percent of the time.. and near connector plugs, or rub points.. I usually start at the main component that is not being energized, and work back from there. going directly to the actuator, and checking for power, then working back.
Agreed...likely that damage was from the frame replacers. That's also how the mounting brackets got broken too. They forgot to disconnect it as they separated the body from the frame. Nice fix even so...no parts needed. If it were my truck, I would check with Toyota for a replacement connector end as Toyota usually has every part for every vehicle. I remember back in the late 80's I wanted OEM screws and bolts as well as OEM tie downs and Toyota had them. Only took 2 days to get them to the local dealer. Seems to me that a little dab of FLUX helps. I had the '87 4 Runner 22R 4 cyl 4x4 with the solid front axle housings and the Hi-Low shift lever. I believe that was the last year they used them. Boy, was that truck reliable !
Great job, as always! I like the systems with a big old lever to do the 4wd shifting. Only a light to indicate in 4wd, and if the light doesn't work, the truck still does. It's going to be really hard to give up my old truck. Maybe I never will.....
Ivan your videos are so well executed we all know behind the scenes you’re crawling under the vehicle hooking up wires, crawling out of the vehicle, tearing things apart and then like magic, showing us everything in detail another A1 repair love watching your videos. Thanks.
Finally used flux, yay! Tip: I use a small screwdriver to carefully place flux only where I want the solder to flow, especially when soldering near a pin. If not, flux can flow into the pin when you apply heat and wick solder into the pin ruining it.
In a lot of cases you can create a barrier to the solder "flow" with graphite powder (or a #2 pencil in a pinch). Solder doesn't like graphite, even with flux. Just remember to get all the little holes and cracks because the flux will make it find a path if one exists. With a little practice this could be an invaluable skill to protect precious little pins.
I had a 2007 Taco base 4wd. Everything worked beautifully and the frame wasn't rusty. It was a standard cab and it was built so cheaply that I sold it and bought a 2017 crew cab long bed with all the goodies. 4L was sticky and you had to rock and jiggle the truck to get it to engage in cold weather.
The power of testing and visual inspection. Nice job Ivan. Had a client call me last week. He did an engine swap 1985 truck replace engine with 2001. He had custom harness built and ECM. Complaint engine would stay running wanted me to bring my scan tool to diagnose. Confirmed complaint. First thing fuel pressure test. Found low pressure. Visual inspection. Bingo he pinched fuel line doing the engine install. One time easy diagnostic and repair.
i really like how you test the wiring and prove what is wrong , the people i work with parts bomb everything and its not rewarding , as for me i test even tho it may take a bit longer its quicker than getting it wrong , great video , always watching from here in New zealand
Nice diagnosis and repair. Almost no parts required. My son in law has a 1992 regular cab manual 4wd and people hit him up at the gas station to buy it from him all the time. He told the last guy $8000 and he was ready to go to get cash from the bank.
That truck is almost mint! Great maintenance by customer! Robust diagnostic strategy, using only the test light and multimeter, to find a single broken wire. Great job, Ivan!
Great job Ive! 😃👍! Logical fault tracing & a lesson in voltage drops 'across earth' included! Just one stoopid busted wire causing all the trouble! Nailed it as usual!
Well done Ivan, your customer did well and was almost there and if the customer tried to replace the actuator, may have found the broken wire. Looks a stunning truck, best kept for Summer use.
Last year, my 2004 Sequoia would not disengage from 4WD. Wiring and connectors looked OK. Did not do any electrical testing because I do not understand all of that stuff😂Removed the face plate from the actuator next to the front diff rod control. Noted that the metal spiral control surfaces inside were rust free but saw one or two cruddy balls of old lubricant, which I removed. Reassembled and heard the reassuring clunk of it disengaging out of 4WD. Have left it well alone since, even though 4WD would be useful here in Minnesota. Will try it again when we return home to Pennsylvania in June, where at least I can take it to Ivan should it get stuck again!
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics What I did probably had nothing to do with it coming out of 4WD, just glad it did 😆 but trust me before that I tried everything to get it to move, putting in reverse, neutral, rolling forwards, backwards, low, high, pressing the 4WD engage/disengage button, moving the manual shifter, you name it. As I say, I will try it again when I'm back in PA, unless I get stuck in the ❄️!
Thanks for the video, I'll definitely be putting a link to it in my 4wd help thread on TacomaWorld. You did a very good job pinpointing the problem on an unfamiliar system. Alot of people come on the forums with the flashing 4wd light (many times after they or a shop already replaced both actuators and the ECU), alot of the time it ends up being a broken wire or mistimed actuator (built in ptoblem).
The newer ones often have problems supposedly due to not being used enough, but I don’t buy that theory. And they also say the TC has to be removed to replace the actuator. Hogwash. You just have to be sure to get them clocked correctly when reinstalling. Easy. I had problems with My 2019 not engaging and or not disengaging intermittently from the time I bought it new. Took it back to dealer a couple times and of course it would not act up. I removed , inspected, lubricated and reinstalled the actuator. Nothing wrong with it, but it still kept sticking. Took it back again and they caught it acting up as I stated, but the tech gave Me the solution, which I have absolutely no explanation for, but He told Me when switching from 2H to 4H or 4L - fully depress and release clutch pedal 2 times . I thought “ Yeah Right”. I’ll be doggoned, it works every time! Be a good one for Ivan to investigate with the Pico. The only guess I have is that for some reason the TCM needs a reminder signal or something? Mine is of course the 3 pedal version, so I don’t know if there is any similar remedy for the automatics. Thought I would pass this along and wondered if You heard of it? 👍👍🇺🇸
@@brianw8963 The electronic 4wd systems do tend to get finicky when they don't get used much, it's best to engage them once a month or so to keep things from getting sticky. The vent hoses on the actuators are another common failure point on Tacoma's, when they break or come off water and dirt get into the actuators and destroy them. The nice thing about the 3rd gen system is it will talk to a scan tool so it makes diagnosing it much easier. I'm not sure about the clutch thing, I've never even seen a manual 3rd gen yet but I can't see why it would have anything to do with 4H as you only need to depress it to get in and out of 4L.
My truck has never been off roading or mudden or any such thing. The scan tools can help if there is an actual fault, which in this case there is none. You have never even seen a manual 3rd gen. ??
Wow, 10 years with no 4wd? Then it's the bad wire connection? Unreal. I'm sure that connector was not affixed to the frame one the new frame was put in. Mind boggling to overlook that! But great job Ivan. I really like how the owner did a great job really taking care of that truck!!! I like how clean that is!
Very good diag and fix Ivan. Corrosion. The enemy of wires. Weather packs are good sometimes for rain but definitely NOT for salt water. I can only imagine how many other wires and connectors are damaged on this vehicle. The best 4WD system in my opinion is the one with 2 levers. The taller one is the front drive, the shorter one is 4 High to 4 Low. ALL MECHANICAL!
Nice job with the diag, as usual! This just makes me like manual shift transfer cases even more. Just too bad those are going the way that the dodo bird and manual transmissions have gone.
Have fixed a few of these. The one that wsa crazy was the 2009 that would not engage 4x4. I found front axle was engaging and so was transfer case but the TC had stripped gear inside. It had brand new front actuator and new TC actuator that was put on before my customer bought it. The other one just had a corroded front axle actuator.
Had a similar problem that kicked my ass on a GMT800, you'd try to enter 4x4 and the buttons would just flash. Switch was fine, encoder was fine, axle actuator would not work. Replaced the actuator, no change. Wiring integrity all the way to the actuator was fine. Finally on closer inspection of the connector I noticed a couple of the pins didn't look like the others, and sure enough they were pushed back into the connector just far enough that they wouldn't contact the actuator. Replacing the connector finally fixed the problem.
It takes a lot of self discipline to perform all those test before going straight to the various connectors. But, of course I don't have to guarantee my diagnoses, Lol Brilliant work Ivan!
Great repair and video, Ivan! Your right eye looked reddish. I hope you didn't have to work on this Tacoma with only one good eye 😃 In any case, this Tacoma landed in good hands with you, and you with your wife who I read knows a thing or two about eyes!
When I first saw this I had to check my collection. I have an 04, same color, and the 4wd has not worked since I got it about 10 years ago. No lights flashing though. 😊👍👍🇺🇸
Back in 1975 I bought a 73 Datsun pickup. A guy before me had a reputable 4x4 shop put Jeep running gear under it. V6, 3 speed manual, transfer case and axles. Manual shift linkage. Get out turn in the hubs. So reliable simple and easy. It had death wobble sometimes. I changed the tires to less aggressive tread and changed the steering stabilizer. Fixed. I got into a motorcycle accident. My left leg was broken. My friend put a 2 speed automatic in it. Way better. Now my girlfriend who is now my wife of 35 years could drive it. It had 5:13 gears. The plan was to put an overdrive in it. I painted it with cool graphics. A guy offered me a nice Ford 4x4 with a 390 cop motor in it and a crazy amount of money for it. I foolishly accepted. Bad decision. I wish I had it today. It got a lot of thumbs up. Not many small 4x4 trucks back then. One time a guy in a Jeep followed me home and into my driveway and asked if I would sell it. No.
Hi Ivan, I’m in England however, I watch Goodzquad you tube channel in Chattanooga TN (10.5hrs) and they are struggling with a new C6 Corvette and have taken it to the dealers and they can’t programme it and are stuck, it would be awesome to see this fixed, it’s not very often they can’t get things sorted, I know this is a long shot, a fan of yours to a fan of there’s.. maybe there’s hope?
Great job. Reading the wiring diagram and understanding functions were key to avoiding parts cannon ‼️ This would be an excellent instructional video in tech schools. You need to send it to Paul Danner. Del
2 years looking at the green light flashing 😭😭😭😭2 minutes it would have drove me nuts 👹👃 Great job pulling the thorn out of your customers mind professional diag men are worth it Great video 👍
My work has 3 of these, decent little trucks, but it's amazing how *grossly underpowered* they are. Some of the drivers prefer the late 90's Ford Rangers (4 cyl.)
Free frame from the massive recall/warranty. Wiring was probably damaged in frame transfer. Many other problems will reveal themselves in years to come. That is probably not the only snafu that happened during the switch.
Bet those guys that replaced the frame did that……and if that guy was smart he would Coat that under carriage with Fluid Film to keep that truck together…..This is what we use here in Ohio….My 2003 4Runner with 364,000 miles would have never survived without it. 🤘🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was driving my Datsun Jeep described in another comment. I came up on a full sized Ford conversion van that slid off the road in snow. I asked him if he wanted me to pull him out? He laughed and said that little thing can’t do it. I hooked up and pulled it out on the first try. 😂
It's kind of rare for a factory workflow chart have you firing the parts cannon without checking the wiring first. Nice find Ivan. I just got in a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Customer complaint, 4wd doesn't work. There is a strong smell of mold in the truck. So, I pulled the drain plugs under the floor boxes thinking there might be some water trapped in one of them. Sure enough, the driver side floor box was full to the top with water. Any guesses where the 4wd control module is on this vehicle? lol. Inside the floor box under the driver seat. I later find out that the vehicle was involved in a flood. I still have to check it out Monday to be sure. But I am confident that there is damage to that module.
I got a thing about those kind of connecter repairs and after I tape it up I take a little silicone and smear it over the top of the tape and up to the connector to give it a little extra seal...
Interesting. Toyota did replace frames because they rotted out so quickly. Did the system work after that? It's easy to overlook a failure if you don't exercise the feature once in a while.
Been following you since Jan of 2016, so glad to see you finally use Flux 😆 🤣 😂 Just remember to clean the area afterwards when using it on boards. I use 99% rubbing alcohol from Amazon, and an old tooth brush.
I really dont understand how some of em can even keep a straight face. Me personally I think that government sucks in general no matter what side of the fence ya are on. Not all democrats are bad and not all republicans are good. I voted for him last time and Im gonna vote for him again. I guess for me is he only has 1 term left so what do we as Americans do going forward? We have a serious lack of responsibility in this country. I dont think we face gun problems any more than we face drug problems. You can set a big pile of drugs on the table and a gun right next to them. Nothing will happen. Not anything until someone touches them. I say this from experience. Jan 14 Marked 10 years since I came home from state prison. I used to love doign drugs and if I didnt think it would ruin my life I probably would still do them. I got married adopted my daughter over the summer. I started my own auto repair shop much like you. I started in spare time fixing GM insturment clusters and have expanded into what I am today. My favorite vidoes of yours was the MPV Christmas special. I give you credit you posted that after the fact. You showed we are all human and dude you know so much stuff but one basic little detail and bam. IMHO There are drug dealers because people do drugs. People dont do drugs because of drug dealers. I think its not the drug use that is the problem. Its everything that goes along with it. Lying cheating stealing. It shouldnt matter what another person does when they go home. There is a serious lack of integrity. @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
Hi Ivan, Nice no parts needed repair. I miss my 1986 F-150 4X4. Had Mud and Snow tires on it and never was stuck in the snow. It had manual locking hubs and a separate shifter for the transfer case. What kind of snow did you get out there? We had only 2" just west of Philly, but it had started to rain a little and made the snow very heavy to shovel. I'm feeling it today.
Funny thing is that if the customer decided to throw the parts cannon at it he probably would have ended up getting lucky and noticing that broken wire :) Bet they whacked it with something when doing the frame replacement as you eluded to.
Well exceuted diagnosis and repair with no parts required. Methodical fault finding procedure eliminates a lot of numerous assumptions and produces the correct results. Not another happy customer?? Give us a break !!
Well done ivan :-D i bet the owner was chuffed with the cheaper repair :-D No Expensive box of tricks needed:-D Stop rubbing your right eye... Oow that could have been months ago, ill shut my gob lol :-D I have nagged some of the repairers to put on plastic safety glasses, eyes are so easy to damage :- ( ..
Long time ago you work on a Lincoln the bad part was in the headliner can that part be move to another location so it not big pain in the butt it maybe of cause the drain on the battery if you remember
Nice find and fix. But why did we have to electrify what was a simple shifter on the floor to engage 4wdr. Toyota frame replacement? At least they do that, still do, and stand behind their product. Try a claim against GM, Ford or Dodge for a bad frame. You'll be sucking wind.
Trying to follow this to diagnose my 2014. It appears that you have the black wire coming out of the cigarette lighter going into your yellow wire thru a junction. How does this work? I don't have that junction and have hooked my black to the black on test light and the yellow to the tip of the test light and the light comes on. If I hook the black to my multi meter and the yellow back probe into the ignition or the ground on the plug (8:45) I get nothing. How do I make my set up work? New to electronics and trying to save a few dollars. Thank you
There's more than one way to skin a cat here with the wire repair. 1) If you know where to look, you can find new terminals for the connector 2) Solder like Ivan did, but you can mess up solder, too. You may not get a good bond with the terminal with that corrosion, or you might get a cold solder joint at the splice if you don't know what you're doing 3) After you run a new wire from the terminal, use a PROPER butt splice and crimp tool and cover with adhesive lined shrink tube. If you're buying those things from a local auto or big box store, don't bother. That's how butt splices fail 4) Bypass the connector for those two wires if the terminal can't be saved and you can't find a new one. Forget the bullet connectors and find something called knife or handshake connectors / terminals, crimped with a proper tool, and cover with adhesive line shrink tube.
When you work under a rusted out vehicle, PLEASE WEAR GOGGLES. A friend of mine got a rusted piece of metal in his eye and had to rush to the ER. The Hi means 12 V and Low means 0 V (grounded) correct when you talk a bout the wiring diagrams (I know 4 wd Hi and Low is not what you state )
