Two Winter nights in Snowdonia-Foel Grach mountain shelter and Dulyn Bothy .

Join us with Scott as we spend a very cold night atop Foel Grach in a frozen mountain shelter. With 50 mph winds we decided to take refuge in the shelter rather than pitch up outside . The next night was spent in the wonderful Dulyn bothy with a warm fire and good company . Check out Scotts version of events on his channel Explorer Buddies.

That brought back pleasant memories, I stayed a night in the shelter about 20 years ago, nice to see nothing has changed not even the weather. I remember that the ceiling dripped constantly and we had to sleep in bivi bags, but it was much better than being outside. We had a great night; I think there was a bottle of Irish Whiskey involved. Great video shot in harsh conditions.

Thank you . I bet it's odd seeing it again . The roof is better now but the condensation is still a problem , luckily it all froze on this visit . It seems there is often a bottle involved with a good night in a shelter 👍.Cheers . Austin and Lucy.

Foel grach, if you do have to spend time in the shelter can you please advise walkers to take their rubbish home with them. Wardens like myself take bin bags to empty what has been left. Enjoy your mountain experience and consider looking after what you enjoy.

After watching each your videos I would love to do some of your walks but how's the best way to start I am a physicaly fit person but no experience of walking off the beaten track what would you recommend may be join a club? I am in the north west of England so loads of place to walk
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
Hi Mark, yes the first thing I’d say is a local club but if your not into that sort of thing then I’d pick a really popular walk. If you choose a start point on an os map then you can basically follow the crowds and cross reference the route on an os map.this will give you a feel for it all anyway.the one thing I know is walkers love to share their knowledge of an area so you’ll always get a bit of help off others.also, download a gps app that follows your route so you can always follow your route back. Happy hiking. Cheers. Austin and Lucy.

Great vid read most of the comments and the repeated ones about the shop but couldn't find the info I was after so I have to ask you. What Garmin GPS is that and are the routes pre loaded or do you plan a route ahead of your journey then you follow it on the day. Theres so many to choose from. Sorry if I've missed someone asking you but I couldn't see it.

Hi , this particular one is an old Garmin Oregon 400t which is 12 years old .The new ones are brilliant nowadays . I have a Garmin 1030 for mountain biking and it’s superb . we usually plan the route on an os map before and use the gps to track our route . it’s easy to plan a route on the Garmin app though . can’t recommend one enough 👍

Whenever I try to spell that I end up with a Turkish cake lol. We do wear them on the most extreme days but usually just use a buff and goggles . It’s a fine balance between staying warm and overheating when we’re lugging the packs up , nothing worse than having your sweat turn cold. 🥶 Our elderly neighbour made me a thick knitted one last year but Lucy says I look like a rapist !! 😳. Was able to drive right up to those lakes in the 70s. Dived in looking for remains of a plane. Only saw aluminium plates full of rivets. car got stuck, had to walk down to village, slept in a for sale car. Taken up next day in a water board land rover. Towed out. a 'u' in Welsh is pronounced with an 'i' sound. So it would be Dilyn. If it were pronounced 'dulyn' it would most likely be spelled dylyn (don't ask about y's though :/ )
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
I hate to admit it but i did know that and cringe every time i hear myself say it on the vid lol. We were Beddgelert chatting to some locals and mentioned we were thinking of having some Welsh speaking lessons , " oh that would be no good to you up here' she said " we speak a different version up here. " I thought what chance have i got then!? . So, if Du is di or dy , then Ddu is Thi or Thy ? Is that right? 🤪
@cr0uchingtiger
@cr0uchingtiger 6 лет назад
oh that's kinda silly to say Welsh lessons would do you no good :p I mean, you're not likely to be using it in conversation but would help massively with a) pronouncing Welsh place names and b) for just deepening your understanding of those words and the language. It's really lilting and poetic like some kind of Elvish Morder shit. You gotta roll the r's and hack on the CH's. Like glyder fawr would have at least 3 r's on the end :p So yeah, if you REALLY want to understand the Welsh 'u' the example you gave of Ddu would be, yes, like Thee (deffo not thy) but it's kind of back of the throat like you're pushing in about 30% of a ooo shape. But that's only when you're showing off, day to day pronunciations, ee is fine. Good luck!

About thirty years ago I left the bus on the coast road and walked up to the waterfall and then I began to climb alongside the stream to climb Carned Llewelyn. The higher I climbed the more the weather closed in until I was exhausted and did not want to move an inch further at about 7 pm. I was going to set up my tent and sleep. I looked up and there in front of me was the foel Grach Bothy where I stayed the night. Not bad for using a. Compass and a map.

This looked cold. Cracking video as always. We are looking at getting up to snowdonia over xmas, weather permitting and this is certainly great fodder for our preparations. Incidentally, what time did you start your walk on the first day? Being quite inexperienced as we are I am hoping to leave enough time to reach the summit in good light?
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
Cheers lads , it certainly prepared us for the next one ( we’ll a little bit maybe ) . We’re also going to Snowdonia over the Xmas break so you never know we might see you there. Depending where your walking from I would get out early , say 8am which will give you loads of time .if your setting off from Pen y Pass car park make sure your there for 7.30 as it fills up quick . The other option from there is to take a Sherpa bus up the Llanberis pass from the big park and ride car park to Pen y Pass . If you take the Watkin Path up parking is no problem but it’s a longer walk ( you start at 75 m asl. Rather than the 300m+ at Pen y pass) but it’s worth the extra time for the views and the little scramble at the top . If you can I’d say leave at sunrise so you’ll miss the crowds as it’s stunning at dawn . Have a great trip and enjoy Christmas and New Year and hopefully we might bump into each other. Cheers . ATb. I don't know if you came across the old pieces of WW2 planes lying around up there. Entire engines and wheels. At the back wall of Cwm Dulyn there crashed an old bomber into the cliffs and it dropped into the lake. In a dry summer they say you can see the tail fin just below the water.

Yes we love the difference a bit of height makes and the conditions just make the shelter a bit more special . Apparently there's a forest bothy Lucy wants to try so that might be soon , got the bug for them now she has .Cheers . A+L

That was bloody awesome !! Certainly tough conditions.... Do you preload your route into Garmin Express prior to the adventure ? I hope Marley leg is now better :) Thumbs up as usual.
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
Thanks John it was a great trip this one . Marley's fine now thanks. I didn't preload this route as we have done it before but i always have it on marking our route as we go anyway . Then i can always accurately retrace our route as we did on this one due to the poor visibility and snow hiding the path . It's a great failsafe and if the route turns out to be a good one i can keep the route to do again. Atb . Austin and Lucy.

My but you two do seem to like the cold hikes. "IF" I do one in the winter it is short and no over nights. Not very ambitious am I? Of course our winters get in the temp range of -28ºc without wind. Much of the reason why I don't go out much. Canada is far worse in temps. Your shelter was looking quite Artic in the morning. Winds can make any temperature feel so much colder and miserable. Poor Marley. I believe they make insulated booties for dogs If they will wear them. Great video.
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
Thanks .We love the winter trips but -28ºc is a whole new ball game , i wouldn't get out much in that! We tried the boots on Marley , he chewed two off and lost the other two on the first outing . They were the good ones as well with the neoprene wraps up the leg.Little bugger . Cheers . Austin.

The bothy certainly helped when the rain came, it was a great trip and Marleys all fine now thanks. The outdoor returns shop is on Ebay but you have to search in the 'sellers' section , their other company sells tents and camping returns and is called camping resource (or very similar).Cheers . We took the same packs on a recent 5 day hiking trip to Switzerland and with all food for the complete trip mine was 33lb . I had my drone with me but i was carrying a 23 ounce tent . Our winter tent ways a whopping 9lb so i would guestimate at around the 40lb mark on this one . That's without water though. Cheers . Austin.

To 2ft4ward Two comments at least about your lingoa non comprehendo. But I have at least once ventured around the M25. So find no problems at all. But having had 'Tika-Masala before I realise it's edible. But you did use a few local Welsh names and references which may have resulted in some from further afeild not realizing they were Welsh plance names. Other wise it was 100% comprehensive to me. TY.

To 2Ft4wd, I think it is a minimum of £60 court costs for a guilty conviction. But with an out of court settlement based on a rebuttal of any guiltyness. I think you can get off free. (Lol)

See what you mean about the sack, I think it's a storage sack so you can let it expand if that makes sense? Would be nice to get a compression sack as well for when you use it.
@2FeetForward
@2FeetForward 6 лет назад
Yes the storage sack is good but it's the other one , the crappy compression sack . It's sort of too wide and doesn't compress enough. Unless they're not supplying it anymore cos quite a few of the reviews moaned about it . What do you think of the actual bag then?
