HWY 31 Kilgore to Tyler can be dangerous, especially in the mornings and late afternoons. I used to live in Tyler and work in Kilgore. I traveled it every day for years. I HATED traveling that road and it eventually drove me to move away from Tyler. Most of 31 is 2 lanes and there are a lot of county roads and FM roads intersecting with 31, and people flying up and down it doing 80 or more. Lots, and I mean lots of wrecks on that road every year.

Tyler: a Texas city where a US highway ends without much reasoning (US 271).

US 271 used to only go between Fort Smith, AR and Hugo, OK. After that, it was extended to Beaumont, TX. US 69 replaced the route between Tyler and Beaumont so now it ends at Tyler at SH 31

Up until the mid 90s all the highways were max 55mph and the Interstates were 65mph. I remember it changing around '95 or '96. They marked some highways 70mph that were not safe for that speed and have since been lowered again.

It's 75 on state road 317 between Mcgregor and Belton only slowing to normal speeds in Moody which is only 3 miles or so.

This is the standard for Texas. I got my license in Texas and lived about 45 minutes to an hour outside of Tyler but moved to Kansas recently and the speed limits being, IMO, 10 mph too slow(even on the highways, 65 is the standard) in most places has been an adjustment.
