Yes, brush springs can make a big difference. Haven't finished watching yet but I don't understand why so many people go overboard with traction magnets. With only level 4 motor magnets the car is probably as fast with stock traction magnets. You're making it work to pull against the strong traction magnets. Better off with the motor magnets stronger than the traction magnets or the same level at least. Plus level 4 motor magnets aren't taking advantage of the armatures potential. Level 4 will wake up a stock arm enough to be about as fast as how this setup is running from the sounds of it. Level 8 or 10 is definitely what the 2.8 arm would like. I'd stick with 8. See how it runs. If it isn't great put some taller tires on the back. The bushed bulkhead doesn't make as much difference in front as at the rear. The work is being done at the rear and that's where things get warm.

@marksslotcargarage Год назад
Thanks Jeff, I will try that out, I don't remember if the 2.8 had the bushing in the front or rear bulkhead but i will try it in the rear bulkhead and pair the 2.8 with the level 8 motor mags. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks for the Tyco update. I don't expect my Tyco cars to run like the Viper units, which is OK for me... I do like to tinker and upgrade the Tyco units to get some performance gains with mild upgrades. The Viper cars are buy and peg the controller for the win... I might try some Super7 product in the future , but not a fan of the can motor. The AFX Mega G+ bodies are Great !!! But I'm not a fan of the (can motor) chassis. ** AFX bring back the Super G+ cars !!!
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage Год назад
Thanks Calvin, I did not expect the Tyco to run like a new 2.5 ohm Viper chassis either but I did expect the 2.8 ohm arm to out perform my 6 ohm viper cars, now that I swapped out the motor mags for the level 8 mags it really has come to life and is running much stronger. I agree with you on the can motor though I do have a few Super 7 that I really like, they are a good smooth running chassis.
@jeffnorbert1871
@jeffnorbert1871 Год назад
Calvin, they really can't bring them back. The Mega G and Mega G+ were basically created because SG+ the way it was wouldn't meet new import regulations. Viper, BSRT and other domestic companies don't have to deal with those regulations because their chassis are assembled in the USA. They aren't an imported "toy". AFX would have been smart to move their manufacturing to the USA decades ago but they didn't. Of course they still could but I think it would bankrupt them if they were to even try.

Great resourceful video! I had a similar problem with Tyco brush springs and went with 006 also. If you add a lexan body on your Tyco build , you could shave off some time plus you might not be so timid to driving it harder. I destroyed a Lamborghini on one of mine.

Hi mark thank you for all your knowledge and time we have talked few times can you explain all the different Ho car types there is afx mega 3 then aw has 3 different types then tyco. When l did this in early 60 l believe there was only aurora when you have time. Then all the different tune up kits but thank you mark . Then your building your viper track so many things changed
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage Год назад
Johnny, that would be a long reply to go over all that. What is your current setup or are you just getting back into the hobby? As for track systems I think most agree that AFX track is the way to go. I am an AFX guy so I stick with there products or Vipers line of cars and chassis which is built off the AFX Super G Plus chassis. I stay away from Auto World personally. A lot has changed for sure with the hobby since the 60's. There are many good chassis out there other than AFX, Tyco has a big following, then there are other brands producing chassis and cars that are all good depending on your budget. Bulldog, HCSlots.com Super 7 chassis, Jag Hobbies chassis are all modern strong running chassis just to name a few, there are also newer chassis that simulate a TJet type of chassis for those that don't like the super fast cars. Just be aware if you purchase a new AFX set it will come with Mega G Plus cars and 120 ohm controllers, those controllers will not run any of the previous chassis I just listed, you will need a lower ohm controller or a controller with a variable sensitivity adjustment. Hope this helps.

Tyco is not longer produced new but you can find plenty of Tyco out on eBay even new old stock. The AW four gear chassis is not bad, I have a few of them and they run pretty good, yes AW makes some nice bodies and most AW bodies fit on AFX/Viper chassis with the AFX body clip. Again if you buy a new AFX track kit remember it will come with those 120 ohm controllers that the new Mega G plus cars need to run well but they won't control a Tyco, Viper of just about any other chassis very well. Most guys replace the stock controllers any way as they are very small and made more for kids hands. A good decent controller that I use is the Difalco DD505 controller thought that will run you close to $90.00 for one but it will run just about any car out there well including the new AFX Mega G Plus cars.

Great video. I removed the traction and motor magnets on two perfectly running cars to clean and when i put them back one is completely dead and another runs in the opposite direction. What have i done wrong? Have i demagnetized or fried the motor? Are motor magnets car specific? Have i oriented them wrong? Theres a super small bronze color metal piece i cannot see where it belongs in either car...almost looks like it broke of something...lm a newb so forgive the questions.
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage 9 месяцев назад
Well the 440x2 can be a bit tricky to work on if you are new to it. If the car is going in the wrong direction and you have the rear axle in correctly then yes you put the motor magnets in wrong and will need to take it apart again and change the orientation of the motor magnets. On the other car it sounds like you broke an armature brush. Those small bronze pegs are the motor brushes, if one is missing or broke the car will not run. You can get replacement parts from hcslots.com, jaghobbies.com or viperscaleracing.com to name a few.

With the lower ohm arms, more powerful motor magnets are called for. A low ohm arm will actually run cooler with more powerful magnets. As others have mentioned here, you can go overboard with traction magnets and that will make the motor work harder. Sorry to hear that the bushing bulkheads aren't working out with that NSX arm. I was really looking forward to that setup.
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage Год назад
No the NSX arm is fine, I was talking about the Tyco bulkheads. The NSX is running ball bearing bushing and is kick ass, I just don't think the cost of the arm is worth it over a balanced 2.5 ohm 35.5G arm, not tat twice the cost. I will try the Pro 8 motor mags with the pro 8 traction magnets on the Tyco 2.8 and see how that combo works. Thanks
@marksslotcargarage

I paired the level 8 motor mags with the level 8 traction mags and it really helped the 2.8 ohm arm come to life....thx.

Can the f1 body fit on a wide pan chassis? Are the viper chassis tyco too?
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage 8 месяцев назад
The F1 does not fit the wide pan, you need a narrow Tyco chassis for the F1. Viper chassis are not Tyco, they are Viper, available at viperscaleracing.com.
@jeffnorbert1871
@jeffnorbert1871 Год назад
So I watched it run. It's not bad. Right that Tyco will have no chance against a good Viper. You have all the parts you need for your Tycos just put those level 4 motor magnets with the 3.5 ohm arm and I wouldn't bother changing the stock traction magnets. Put the level 8 motor magnets with the 2.8 ohm and play with tire sizes. Not much else you want to do with 440X2. Sure not going to outrun a $100 Viper no matter what you do. Take a look at your lap times of the Tycos you are building compared to the stock chassis and congratulate yourself.
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage Год назад
Thanks Jeff. That's exactly what I was thinking and had the same thoughts about pairing the level motor mags with the 2.8, and yes the 2.8 definitely runs much better than a stock Tyco.

I paired the level 8 motor mags with the level 8 traction magnets and it made a nice difference, the 2.8 motor definitely came to life, I can now do laps under 3 seconds which is a nice improvement from the 3.2 I was getting with the level 4's. Also put the Level 4 motor mags with the 3.5 ohm arm and they made that car come to life a little more as well. Need to fix the car height next with proper sized tires front and rear on the 2.8.

Hello slot car buddy. So I'm starting with 5 different Carrera slot car tracks, around 160m. The Tyco Magnum 440 X2 "narrow" Ferrari Formula F1 fits my Carrera 160 Spur track perfectly. Now Iordered 2 Lamborghinis, 1 Stingray and 1 Corvette. But how about the Viper cars?? The contacts are wider? The Carrera is wider, the lanes are spaced around 1 cm more biut the Tyco 440 x2 Ferrari Formula 1 runs amazingly on Carrera 160 Spur. So will the Viper cars fit and work properly ? I hope you know the answer. Kind regards.
@marksslotcargarage
@marksslotcargarage Год назад
I don't know much about Carrera tracks but I would think if a Tyco 440x2 runs on your track than a Viper chassis would as well, they are both HO class, pickup shoe contacts are spaced the same. I run both just fine on my AFX track.
