In Berlin 2009 world championships, Tyson Gay became the 2nd fastest man in history at 100m with 9.71. Unfortunately he did so behind the fastest man ever, Usain Bolt... I already made a video on Bolt's warm-up before the 200m, now here's some unreleased films for Gay's warm-up before the 100m semi-finals (the start trial in the infield was before the first round, the previous day).

For me Tyson has the prototyp of a perfect sprinter physique. He has the best mass distribution. I bet he had the most fast twich nerves. This human was built to run as fast as possible!

Sad that Bolt inadvertently ruined Tyson Gay's career by simply being great. Raced Gay in high school and we knew he would be a superstar. Just came in the wrong era.....spent the rest of his career trying to break records smh. It's sad really

He could've gained quite some time in the initial acceleration phase (0-10 metres), had he started better = more upright in the, towards Ben Johnson's style.

@@earlcallender4265 No - even many tiny sprinters have succesfully started in the same manner being upright after highest 15 metres; and that is how you're supposed to start...

@@TheoOJamaloO1 As I said, he was far too low in the first 10 metres, and he lost ground - some 1/100 of a second!

In the BBC coverage of the event, Michael Johnson talked aobut how Gay's start was significantly compromised by a glitch in technique whereby his right arm swings right back behind him, straight/extended. He talked about how this meant he couldn't drive as powerfully as if the elbow was bent. You can see that problem really clearly here. Johnson was saying Gay had been working with a particular coach (can't remember his name) specifically on his start at that time, but that the coach -- though a good coach generally -- had somehow made his start worse, wtih this technical error setting in. Still, the 9.71 Gay managed in the final is obviously an incredible time.
