Same-sex relationships have been illegal in Uganda since colonial rule - as they are in many African countries, especially former British colonies - and before this Act was passed, they were punishable by incarceration in prison for up to 14 years.

The thing is they're not seen as abominal. Read the comments. It's deeply concerning that so many people are cheering for 20 year imprisonment of innocent people or refusing to judge the policy. And yes, if you believe in human rights you should believe in them everywhere.

Your reply is at least consistent. It's better than most of the crap you find here. I am against the law but think the US is digging itself into a hole with this obsession with sanctions. For our own self-preservation, the US should simply not engage in any sanctions: tariffs I can understand but sanctions always go wrong. For example, sanctions may punish LGBT people in Uganda.

Who decides what are human rights? Countries have a right as sovereign nations to decide. Don't see the middle east being punished or ostracized. Must be the oil resources. Hypocrisy.

The US disagrees with them. They are not threatening war or anything. All they are doing is distancing themselves from a country that would arrest their citizens for being who they are. To put it in a way you like. If your friend who you financially support were to come out to you as gay, you would stop giving said friend that financial support. And that is exactly what the US is doing.
