A UK family will publicly apologise to the people of the Caribbean island of Grenada, where its ancestors had more than 1,000 slaves in the 19th Century.
The aristocratic Trevelyan family, who owned six sugar plantations in Grenada, will also pay reparations.
BBC reporter Laura Trevelyan, a family member, visited Grenada in 2022.
She was shocked that her ancestors had been compensated by the UK government when slavery was abolished in 1833 - but freed African slaves got nothing.

Not sure if it's the 'correct' way to think but i find this mostly pointless, keep the mistakes of our ancestors in our minds as to not repeat them but there's no point appologising for their actions since not only was we not there but we can't speak for them either. Learn from them but there's no point making silly gestures that quite frankly acheives little to nothing. As a black American it's very sad to see all of anger-fueled comments below. An apology is not necessary. This lady did that and it was very kind but unnecessary. What she did do right though is something that I hope more people come to realize, which is that her family and herself have benefited/are still benefiting from slavery. The very least you could do if you are that kind of person is to help out the effected communities. I hate that I have to remind people of this, but slavery wasn't that long ago. Some people's grandparents were slaves so the effects are still active. Remember that whole communities and cultures were torn apart. People were MURDERED, RAPED, and ENSLAVED. So yea, if you're benefiting you should help out those communities in some capacity if you can. Obviously if you're barely making it yourself then it's whatever, but for those that are in positions of power and wealth such as this lady, they/you should be helping out more. No it wasn't you that did these things, but you sure are enjoying the perks and benefits of the ugliness that your ancestors created. So help out the less fortunate, especially when your ancestors are the reason they are less fortunate.

Apologise for something YOU never did to someone who NEVER had the crime committed against them. Do you have any idea where doing this type of thing will end up ? Think Salem Witch trials or the Spanish inquisition or Stalin era Soviet Union, in short think horror.

Kudos to you Laura and family, for first acknowledging the evils of the past and apologizing. This alone means a lot to us descendants of the enslaved. I watched the event and it was very emotional. If I were there in person, I know I would have wept uncontrollably. Let's pray that others follow suite. Salute!

I find it appropriate for Trevelyan the main financial beneficiary of her slave owner forefathers, to hand out some money in Grenada. The truth is that she is probably giving a lot of money to her own distant family members some of which may probably have more of the original slave owners genes than she has. The slave owners had unfettered access to the female slaves. Victims and perpetrators, genetically.

Lol you are desperate for an argument to try and diminish the horrible and heinous crimes Britain committed. Just say sorry and move on for god's sake. That's what any rational person would do
@Bungle-UK
@Bungle-UK Год назад
@@1daxwood I didn’t say any of that so, clearly, you’ve imagined it. I’m merely pointing out that slave trading wasn’t just a white mans activity, so the current fashion to frame this as a race issue is erroneous. Africans were selling there own people into slavery well before the Europeans got involved - see the trade to the Middle East.
