like James and Ben's face was almost scared when they saw the Chef like they are like Oh sh*t....

Ben has the humility and confidence at the same time to be a great chef. He immediately knows when James bested him and goes with it. Not this time, though.

Bens hand shaking in terror as he poured the Sake was a perfect example of what he was feeling...

I have been watching Sorted for almost 8 years and I don't think I have ever seen Ben react like that before. It was absolutely adorable.

I think he hasn't eaten a lot of Fusion food before so he didn't quite understand the dish as much as most people. Not that'd take much away as he's a 2 star chef.

@@crazydoodler absolutely. Most people only know the American version of him. But that's not the real or the only Ramsey. And I loved his appearance in First We Feast.

Thierry Pasteur honestly even his “American” shows still portray that he’s a very sweet guy and just has a gruff exterior. I can’t say I’ve ever seen him on a show and thought “wow this guy doesn’t mean well at all and is just an asshole.”

What you didn’t see is just out of frame, there’s a brick in Ben’s seat.

Why do you have to be a culinary student to understand that? Haha. I think we all get it - even us plebeians who aren’t culinary students but are just fans of cooking and food. Such an odd thing to think that only culinary students can recognise how spot on it is. Sorry if I’m missing something.

@@xionmemoria pretty sure there's no plural form in japanese at all. just pairing count nouns with counter words (e.g. pieces)

I have 2 bottles of alcohol I've spent more than a hundred dollars on, one a bottle of Mcallans and one was a pretty amazing bottle of Sake. And yeah Sake can go with anything and some pretty good bottles out there aren't even that expensive, though availability might depend on location.

It's tricky to keep secrets in the SORTED studio... But that one knocked James and I for 6! Caught us way off guard!

I totally feel for Ben! Many years ago I was working as a sous chef in a high end hotel. I was putting the final touches on a seven course tasting menu for two that the chef had asked for for a VIP, when from out of the chef's office walks the chef, and Anthony Frikken Bourdain!! (turns out they were school chums and Bourdain was in town for some conference...this was before all the TV stuff really took off, back when he was 'just' a famous chef) I damn near sliced by thumb off I was so surprised (was putting the finishing touches on the amuse bouche). I was completely starstruck and just sort of stammered out what an honour it was to meet him. Later, we were cleaning up for the night and he came down to compliment me on the food...one of the proudest moments of my cheffing career.

@Taps fan Thanks! It's one of those moments that has always stuck with me. I was devastated when I found out he died, especially *how* he died. His TV persona was very unlike how he was in person...sorta like I'm given to understand Gordon Ramsey is. He was jokey (*VERY* funny, in a 'dry wit/snark' sort of way), gave me a couple tips, and even signed my copy of his book (which is still one of my most prized possessions). He was a giant in the industry and a truly amazing human being, and I miss him.

@@SortedFood When James saw who the judge was, he looked like he'd found the 9th level of hell! I imagine that if he'd known who his audience would be, he would have chosen a different dish altogether. 🤣 It's a hard-knock life!!

@@seraphale Omg I couldn't agree more. Though James's dish was still amazing, it didn't really incorporate Japanese influence to the extent that Ben's did, so I understand why Ben won in the end. James's dish came off as very British to me

this is a year old comment but if they're doing a pass it on for japanese food and the order goes by birth month, i'd like to add that they should start in order of birth month according to when the japanese school year starts, so whoever is in april, and then goes down.

I agree cooking in the dark wouldn't be good but maybe cooking by candlelight or under like black light with a bunch of glowsticks and neon
