As a Gautrain user, I found this hilarious. Firstly, it was operated way before 2011. We had the Gautrain during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Construction was years and years before. The first week of the train, many people were given fines for eating, drinking and even chewing gum onboard the Gautrain so that guard at the turnstile thingy telling you to leave the coffee behind was doing it for your own good. They do sometimes patrol onboard while the train is moving and if they'd caught you eating the doughnuts, you would have been fined. Cleanliness is a big deal for the Gautrain. To sort the no Uber problem at some stations, I just take the Gautrain bus and hop off at a convenient spot then request. It's really cheap and can be anything from R7 to around R20 if you took the train beforehand (you use the same card for bus payment).

Something I would like to see after this brilliant exercise, is comparison between: 1. Driving from Pietermaritzburg, KZN. Gas price, Toll fees, rest stop costs, and trip duration. Compared to 2. Driving from Pietermaritzbirg to King Shaka Airport, taking a plane to OR Tambo. and a Uber to the finish place. What's the cost, cost to park car overnight at King Shaka airport, Petrol, and duration. Compare the total time duration and total cost from start to finish for both methods of travel.

So many pros and cons. I like the one-seat approach of a car compared to taking the 🚄. With the train, you got onto Uber 1, then train, then perhaps a Gaubus at the end - just too much movement, especially if you’ve got a bit of luggage with you.

Is it common that you are not allowed to eat or drink on trains? In Norway, and the trains I've been taking other places in Europe, you are free to eat and drink as you want. I also wonder why you didn't take a bus, an electric scooter or a rental bike to and from the station. In Norway, it would take me less than 1 minute to grab a Voi, Ride, Tier or other electric scooter or a rental bike, and it would take 15 minutes with fresh air to go 3 km. And if the weather is really bad, you could just take the bus, and it would be 20-25 minutes. But maybe those are not options in South Africa?

7:52 Dubz has a point here. It's nonsense how literally all the lanes other than the passing/fast lane is flowing properly. This is the same issue in many countries like the USA. Please. If you're not passing anyone or doing the speed limit...GET THE F**K OUT OF THE WAY!!! Go as far left as possible with whatever speed you're doing. If you wanna speed up and pass go right. Please dammit. We don't want to have a "swim>" situation like New York City
