Bringing a portable Ultra Violet or UV light into the forest at night is such a rewarding experiment. Anyone can do this, either at home, or by bringing a portable blacklight or ultraviolet flashlight (link included below) into the forest or backyard at night. Many things will glow under the ultra violet spectrum and those that do, will glow with such brilliance that it can sometimes confuse the camera. The Apatelodes moth caterpillar will glow a bright greenish yellow, while some fungi turn an incredible florescent orange! Mycology is the most reactive the my UV flashlight, and some mushrooms will be purple, blue, green, and even yellow all at once. Ferns are also reactive to ultra violet lamp, giving off a super vibrant green. The most interesting thing about the ferns is that when they floresce, it almost appears as if they have prints of other fern species on their leaves, but they are diagonal.
