Bringing a portable Ultra Violet or UV light into the forest at night is such a rewarding experiment. Anyone can do this, either at home, or by bringing a portable blacklight or ultraviolet flashlight (link included below) into the forest or backyard at night. Many things will glow under the ultra violet spectrum and those that do, will glow with such brilliance that it can sometimes confuse the camera. The Apatelodes moth caterpillar will glow a bright greenish yellow, while some fungi turn an incredible florescent orange! Mycology is the most reactive the my UV flashlight, and some mushrooms will be purple, blue, green, and even yellow all at once. Ferns are also reactive to ultra violet lamp, giving off a super vibrant green. The most interesting thing about the ferns is that when they floresce, it almost appears as if they have prints of other fern species on their leaves, but they are diagonal. I know it sounds wierd, but you need to se for yourself. #blacklightnature #ultravioletnature #mushrooms

I love watching the chlorophyll almost appears to pull itself toward the uv light. And realizing how many millipedes are in any given square foot of the forest floor 😍 I love when I come across a fellow fluorescence fan!

The caterpillar is awesome, fungi are beautiful. I so want to try this. Need to be brave enough to walk in the woods at night first!. Shouldn't have listened to all those creepypastas 😨 Hopefully we'll be moving to a place with a decent-sized garden soon, green space next door too. River is a short walk away. I'm told there's a fair amount of semi-urban wildlife.

Thanks for the reminder. I have one of those Amazon-bought lights, and will fire it up tonight in my backyard. That caterpillar was most excellent. Plus everyone knows I love fungi.

UV is used to ID some lichens based on if they fluoresce or not under UV; if so is it long or short wave? See Brodo & Sharnoff's "Lichens of North America" Many cheap UV lamps are not specific on spectrum. That said, a cheap Harbor Freight UV flashlight is still good fun.

Cool video, I didn't think much of the whole fluoresce thing, just thought it was just our scorpions out here. Then, I went out with someone like you this summer and they were shining it on everything. Blew my mind how many things actually fluoresce. Wild about the flying squirrels.

Another awesome video, thanks for sharing. The use of a UV light can help you discover things you otherwise wouldn't find.

Interesting video Chris. Have you tried the UV on algae in the water yet? Now I am wondering why some things fluoresce and other things don't? BTW, when was this video filmed? I am asking because here in CT it's been very cold at night, like freezing range. Anyway, be well & stay safe out there!
