Not only a 16 seed over a 1 seed, a 16 seed over the unanimous 1 overall team in the entire tournament, winning by 20 points and who many had going all the way. wow just wow March MADNESS
I'm still in shock. The UMBC alumni association called me a few days ago asking for a donation, and I said no. Next time they call...I'll still say no, but with pride.😆
Many people thought Virginia’s loss to Syracuse in the 2016 Elite 8 was embarrassing. Fast forward almost 2 years later and this is the worse lose ever.
Arizona is still an embarassed to lose the game, but you're right. Nothing can beat this embarassment of Virginia. Not only, the first ever 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed, but as a number 1 overall seed.
and VA becomes infamous as the only one seed to lose in the first round. That poor school..what a horrific label to get stuck with. Their players might want to stay away from their school for a while. lol
This loss was way worse than the Arizona one... umbc had no business cooking Virginia like this lol. At least Arizona lost to a buffalo team that is top 25 in rpi. But good win retrievers! Year of the underdogs!
My generation just got to witness the Cubs winning the world series for the first time since 1908, the Eagles winning their first Superbowl in franchise history, and then a 16 seed upsetting a number 1 seed for the first time in March Madness history! What a time to be alive!!
Jake Wharton any Canadian team, they haven’t won since 1993 with Montreal. I call it the curse of st. Patrick. Montréal trader Patrick Roy in December 1995, and he went on to win the Stanley cup that season in Colorado.
Honestly, I think Virginia underestimated them. I sat and watch the entire game and virgina was playing way too slow. On top of that they were 5-20 something from three.
Classic example of not knowing the opponent and a 3 point contest in the 2nd half. The 3 point differential between the two teams was the almost the differential but they also were giving up layups. They lost by so much that you almost cam say any team facing the 3 point differential Virginia had would have lost.
The NCAA has just announced they are scheduling an additional game for the tournament on Sunday. Virginia will be playing Arizona....winner to receive a participation trophy.
Wichita state is pretty small tho. before 5 years ago no one even knew about them. Sad they lost cuz I love the shockers but im gonna be routing for the buffalo bulls.
Marshall is about the same size as Witchita State and Miami. Marshall always does decent in football. Their basketball has been on the rise since Dantoni took over.
Well umbc is known for their chess and pulled of the greatest college basketball upset in ncaa history there goes my bracket and my knowledge of basketball
Grew up in Brooklyn Park and was a Bee in HS. Loved this. I went to Loyola for college and I live in CT now but this made me super proud of where I grew up.
UMBC not only beat a #1 seed, they beat the overall #1 seed and the team that finished #1 in the AP Poll. That makes the upset even better for UMBC and even worse for UVA. If Thomas Jefferson had known that UVA would someday lose to a #16 seed, he'd have probably said, "You know what, never mind."
THIS is why we watch sports. THIS is why they call this tournament March Madness. Congrats UMBC on your epic, history making night. Enjoy it for all it's worth.
RepoSnow It's definitely Lyles. Dude not only scored 28 on 9/11 shooting, but hit a game winning 3 pointer in their conference championship game that got them in the tournament in the first place! Lyles will be a UMBC legend
As the 2023 NCAA Tournament draws near, I still look back at moments like this where the impossible and the unlikely become a reality. What a game that this was...one for the history books.
Me too, same here, etc. A 16 has come close a few times, but always the #1's depth would put it away in the last 5 minutes. I tuned in with 11 minutes to go and I think UMBC was up by 11. I expected the comeback; I'm glad it didn't happen just for the sake of history.
I told all my buddies that I had a feeling that this was going to be the craziest, most unpredictable tournament anyone has ever seen. So far it has blown my mind that there have been already overtime games, and upsets already!!! Let the Madness begin 🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
No joke when I say, I picked UMBC to win. Swear to god. I've always picked the 16th seed to win even though it never works.....now I'm shocked and happy cuz a 16th seed finally got passed the first round and that Virginia lost
Chris Roberts ....thaaaank yooouu! For what it is, i still feel like folks are doin the most with these reactions. Not that big a deal to me. I wish it coulda happened to Duke or NOVA though 😒
speedy Williams ....i don't, unless that underdog is a team that im ALREADY a fan of, or one of the favorites is a team that i ALREADY regularly root against ( like Duke, KU, or Nova 👎😒)
Definitely not. I was wondering whether or not to consider applying to UMBC because I want to go to a school with interesting sports culture. This certainly altered my perception.
UMBC is in our local team's (Binghamton) conference. Awesome to see someone from such a small conference defy the odds! UMBC are stars overnight! Congrats UMBC!
I knew this season was Gona be a crazy tournament, at the start of the season a whole bunch of prestige teams took early losses, gotta love college basketball
Virginia will never win a NCAA championship until they get an offense. Last yr they only scored 39 pts and lost to Florida. This is now the 6th time this has happen to UVA, all because they struggle to score pts.
No defense wins championships it's just Virgnia plays slow and methodical and makes their opponents play the same way. The problem with them is that they're offense is so slow they can't score lots of points quickly.
Dominic Gunderson look at this year's final four teams. All have huge offenses and adequate defenses. The game has changed a lot. The golden state warriors win because of super crazy offense even though Steph has lead the league in steals. Defense is important but it's definitely offense that you need more.
+26..defense is very important, just as important as offense..the 2016 UVA team played the same style but they had better play makers..but i agree, Bennett has to upgrade is offense..every opponent will look at how UMBC won and follow what they did
Lyles had an amazing game for sure, but the whole UMBC team had their best game everyone was making their shots grabbing rebounds looking like the #1 seed hope they can keep up with the intensity it would be wild to see them go all the way
As a UK fan I'm in awe, but more importantly you did the heavy lifting for whomever comes out of this bracket. See you next weekend if you beat k state.
