Umpires find illegal devices in helmets, a breakdown 

I like how the coach walked onto the field with the iPad he wasn't supposed to have IN HIS HAND and they still couldn't figure it out, amazing.

I get that teams shouldn't cheat, but the high stakes of New Jersey Community College Baseball will make people do crazy things.

Baseball has changed so much... Back in my day the cheaters just banged on a trash can.

The crowd would have been absolutely shocked, if anyone was there.

It’s one thing to cheat as an adult but when a coach is spearheading the scheme for college kids, sets an awful example.

Wait. Two players are caught with communication devices in their helmet and their coach, who wasn't supposed to have electronic devices in the dugout, walks out of the dugout with an iPad in his hand and no one could figure out what was going on? Unbelievable.

Umpires bottled it. Should have ejected them and the coach (for the audacity to address them with the forbidden ipad in hand!).

Cheating team should’ve forfeited

Its wild to me that it seems there was no punishment doled out during the game. Like to me, if you're caught directly cheating in a fashion like that, you should just forfeit the game. Your team cheated and did so knowingly and willingly. Hell, even a single game forfeit is probably lenient. They should probably forfeit every game in the series. The coach resigning is one thing, but why are those 2 players allowed to continue playing? Kick them out of the league.

The amount of cheating in baseball at any level is insane. I've never understood how you can get satisfaction from winning when you KNOW that you cheated to win.

I live 5 minutes from that field. The stadium is called the Sand Castle as it's in Atlantic City. Our area had been asking for a minor league team for decades and then in the 90's they gave us one of those independant league teams and built the Sand Castle. We didn't want an independent league team so the one we got didn't last long as people just weren't going to watch them and they left. Not that anyone cared for that little history lesson but there it is :)

Only two *helmets* had them. They might be reusing those two helmets throughout the batting order.

As an outsider, it seems to me one of baseballs unwritten rules that the culture accepts is "it ain't cheating if you don't get caught".

If they were stealing the catcher's signs, who's to say they were using an official feed of the game? Cameras can be hidden just about anywhere.

I used to decipher signals from base coaches. My coach wouldn’t even let me tell my teammates.

Even with a 45 second delay you can still match up the pitches to the signals, figure out what signal goes to what pitch. Which is half of what you need to effectively cheat.

Yeah, using the live stream, probably not happening. But could another camera have been stash around the field somewhere? Also, I feel like we need a more extensive breakdown here. Jomboy is really quick to say it was just those two players but.... Those helmets cycle through everyone right? And is it possible the batter that was on deck who showed what he had, intentionally grabbed a 'clean' helmet in that instance? He had plenty of time to react to what was going on after all.

I used to work at a store that filmed a reality show the crew had an app, called TeraView from a company called TeraDek that let anyone with an iPad/iPhone to live view all the cameras that were filming, wirelessly. That way an assistant director or the lighting guy could see exactly what the camera was seeing and so could other crew, like the guy who made sure everything that appeared on camera was OK permission clearance wise. The live feeds from those cameras has to go to a production office somewhere who switches the camera feeds which is then broadcast and I would almost guarantee it's done wireles so it could be very easy to have someone chat up a BFA Sports worker and find out about their systems or shoulder surf while they are setting up to see what setup they are using. It's how I figured out the app the crew was using at my place and how to connect it.

The spy camera is located in one of the water buckets on top of the dugout. Or most likely, as it’s New Jersey, one of the IT staff of BFA was paid off to send live transmissions.

Manfred has made clear that cheating is OK as long as yu don't get caught, they're just following the lead.

What a great coach for these young guys, teaching them that cheating is perfectly ok, then lie about it when busted!!

Now that sports betting on college sports is legal, you're going to have all sorts of cheating going on.

They don’t even need the cameras to be cheating. Just the communication from the earpiece is enough. They could use a number of diff people to communicate the pitches.

It sounds like they weren't using the broadcast camera, but they were definitely using something else. Maybe a spotter in the outfield bleachers. At any rate hearing voices emanating from the runner's helmet, then finding the headset, should have been all they need to eject everyone involved.

I went to a South Jersey community college. My school doesn't have a team, but apparently did when I was there, which I never knew despite being on campus regularly for 2 years. My high school played higher stakes games than this, and with that in mind I eagerly await the inevitable 10 U rec league sign stealing scandal breakdown.

The live steam can still be compromised. There are work arounds. Even though there is a delay, if the coach was given access to the raw feed, he would have live up to the second video available to him, from every camera.

I think 1st base coach was giving the calls or even someone in the stands. I'm guessing the tablet was for the stream, but just to replay everything for info.

I'm a senior referee in another sport which has prohibitions on electronic communication. If I were to find such a device, the athlete is out of there. Most likely their coach will be joining them unless its clear someone else is the culprit, and it is entirely possible the entire team is gone. And the next thing is the league will be contacted for further disciplinary action.

Pretty crazy they managed to catch the only two players with the devices. I know they heard noises and that is why they insisted on the check, but how lucky do they have to be that only those 2 players on the field at that time had the equipment in their helmets. Just think if they would have checked the batter first and found nothing. Maybe there were other players who had it, but they managed to remove it before being checked in the dugout.

They said it was just for practice....that they were using in a live game. My god. What garbage umping.

They had someone that could read the signs calling it in from the stands, outfield, or wherever.

Makes me wonder if or how much they monitor the radio spectrum for this kind and other incidents

Absolutely amazing that nobody got ejected for this and no punishment was given from the league. We can see that New Jersey's community college league takes integrity very seriously, as is typical New Jersey tradition.

I'm guessing the coach had his own camera in the outfield (or an accomplice). The livestream wouldn't allow for instant stealing of signs, but a simple video call would. Or even someone simply relaying where the catcher sets up (outside/inside) would be useful.

This is almost as genius as when Michael Pineda went out on the mound with a giant blob of pine tar on his neck, and started casually applying it to his fingers before every pitch. Like he was the Invisible Man or something.

Not sticking up for that team or anything. But we had an IPad in our dugout this community college season. We used it to run the game changer app (live updates of the games for people at home). Our team manager ran it and we never tried or had to hide it. Or even aware of that rule. Maybe that state or division has a different rule. But there’s other things to use the iPad for.

Who says they were trying to use the delayed "live" feed into the iPad? It's pretty easy today to plant your own - much faster - ultra hi definition camera and connect it through cellular signal with very little latency..

As I recall, players caught with a corked bat claim the same thing, that the corked bat was used just for practice.

I pitched high school an American Legion baseball in the mid 80’s. My coach would’ve given me the Apache woo woo woo sign, hand over the mouth war chant and that meant I DRILL every batter in the head until I’m told to stop. I preferred the rib armpit area because they can’t escape the heat.

Should have been two outs, one for each runner, both runners and coach ejected all equipment and the iPad confiscated and a fine against the college.

The interesting thing is the delay doesn’t matter too much if you learn enough about the pitcher and the pitches I feel like you can study them well enough to predict the information then relay it to the batter in real time the livestream was just to check if they change their methodology mid-game. Maybe that’s a reach but that’s why that kind of technology is game-breaking.

The players should have reported it to the school. They need to be suspended as well.

Saw this coming as soon as I heard about the earpiece communication between pitcher and catcher only, then heard the infielders would have them too. Knew it was a matter of time before batters and runners would have them too. Immediately thought of Judge at the plate with his eyes darting to the dugout between pitches… my first thought was…. He’s listening to an earpiece in his helmet being signaled from the dugout.

Suspend the team for the season & Fire the manager
