@@claytoncourtney1309 I think a coach stepping out of the dugout would automatically trigger either a clock timeout (one of two per at bat is it?) or a mound visit (one per pitcher per inning). Either way, batter should set up in the box as normal until he hears the ump grant the timeout.

@chrismac5560
@chrismac5560 11 месяцев назад
The stupid thing about him arguing after is that the first strike really didn't effect the outcome of the AB. The first pitch was a foul tip, maybe in an 0-0 count he doesn't swing at that pitch but in that case if the ump called it correctly it would have been strike one. Pitches two three and four are balls one two and three regardless as really none of those three pitches were even remotely competitive. Then pitch five that was fouled off to stay alive with a full count would have been fouled off for strike two and make the count go full. So regardless of violation the sixth pitch would have been a full count pitch which he looked at over the heart of the plate. Maybe without the violation with a 0-0 count he doesn't swing at the first pitch and he gets a favorable call from the ump which then the AB would have resulted in a four pitch walk but that first pitch was clearly a strike if he didn't swing. Maybe if the first pitch was a ball lower and he swung because it's 0-1 not 0-0 then he'd have an argument that the violation call effected his approach and the outcome of the AB but as I see it that violation call made zero difference to the outcome of the AB

@Benjamin-1776- 11 месяцев назад
@@Thebusterugglass The umpire didn't get a single aspect of any call wrong, not even a little bit. Time had not been called by any umpire for the mound visit. As a matter of fact no player or coach on either team had even asked for time. As such, when the timer hits 8 seconds with Winker not being set the umpire has zero discretion on calling the timer violation. Not one single bit of this is even in question nor is any of it even rationally arguable. To act like the umpire was in the wrong here you would need to be literal friends/acquaintances with Winker like Jomboy is and act blatantly biased in Winker's favor because of it just like Jomboy does throughout the entire video. It's like claiming you shouldn't get a shot clock violation in basketball because an assistant coach on the opposing team had stood up on the bench and was about to call a timeout. To argue any of it would quite simply be asinine.
@CobraClutch34
@CobraClutch34 Год назад
Really interesting timing on everything. Winker seemed to be waiting for the pitcher to be done fidgeting with his hat/PitchCom before stepping in to the box. I don't think Winker knew the pitching coach was coming out, but he could tell that something wasn't right on the mound. Even right after the ump calls time, you can see the pitcher motion towards the dugout, almost sticking up for Winker and signaling that a mound visit is incoming.
@babababad
@babababad Год назад
Could be the pitcher is trying to alert the ump to the coach coming out, so the ump will call time. Could be he's gesturing while telling the ump to call the batter on the clock violation, or gesturing toward the catcher to indicate he's mixed up about something on the card.
@stephenbeck7222

Nothing is stopping Winker from getting set in time, regardless of whether or not he had a hunch the coach was coming out. Bad umps are just looking for a chance to throw you out but he's acting like he doesn't want to but has to if someone keeps badgering him after making a decision. Counsell's approach was great, too. No immediate freak out, just asking what's going on to try to keep his guy from getting thrown out. This is a great example of how you don't have to agree with the ump but everyone involved can make their case without it turning into a freak out. And I agree with the guy getting tossed because it was settled and then he went back to it. I would have thrown him out then, too. Of course this channel would be less fun without some ejection freak outs, so don't everyone start behaving. 😁

@Xanlet
@Xanlet Год назад
@@kqatsi I was a hockey referee for over a decade, and in the rule book it states directly, any person who argues a call shall be given a penalty. From what the ump said, it sounds like it's the same in baseball. If an official allows you to argue at all, he's literally bending the rules so you can vent a little. People take that for granted when they shouldn't. By the rule book, the second you argue a call, you should be penalized instantly. Imagine criticizing an official for bending the rules to allow you to argue a little, but finally imposing the rule after you've taken the initial leeway and gone even further.
@kqatsi
@kqatsi Год назад
@@Xanlet But you're conflating the "is" and the "ought"-in other words, you're assuming that just because something is a certain way, it should be that way. It's that simple.
@Xanlet
@Xanlet Год назад
@@kqatsi In hockey, there are captains and assistance captains who are entitled to ask for an explanation, that's reasonable, but to argue a call is not. If appropriate, there can be a challenge process, but nothing is gained from a player or coach trying to press an official to change a call. I think it's actually very important to stick to your lane in sport, imagine if the official went up to the coach and yelled at him for a stupid strategy, it would be ridiculous because that's not the official's job, same the other way around. It's not a player's or a coach's job to criticize the officiating. The ultimate irony is that if you actually wanted to change how an official is calling something, you would try to befriend him and try to understand the call he's making, because then you could point out any error in a friendly way without arguing or yelling, and the official would be forced to consider it rather than to be on the defense against an argumentative person, but of course emotions always interfere with that.

Would've liked to have seen a wider view of this. The pitcher had his hat off adjusting it then throws his hand towards the dugout as the batter steps into the box and the coach is walking out. Just a very strange sequence of events. The only thing that turned the batter's attention to the first base line was the pitcher's gesture from what I could see but then again I don't know what audio is like on the field. Like you said, just be where you need to be at the designated time.

He didn't see the coach, but he could see that the pitcher and catcher were not getting ready. I think they both (pitcher and catcher) already knew the coach was coming out and the batter could have reasonably picked up from how they were acting that a mound visit was coming. IMO that's probably still on the batter because they don't know if the coach will actually come out fast enough for the 8 second timer (and I guess he didn't, it's unclear), but I can understand the confusion because nobody was getting ready.

The ump walks out, makes the call, steps in front of home, and then the pitching coach gets to the foul line. The coach probably stepped out at 8 seconds to aurgue the ump not calling the violation. If the ump does call it, then it is a mound visit. It had nothing to do what the batter did.

@Morgan423Z
@Morgan423Z 11 месяцев назад
I think the real commentary Winkler was trying to make was that the umpire needs to be enforcing the rules at all times, and that the pitching coach stepping onto the field should have broken up the pitch clock, whether the batter sees him or not. In this case, the figurative tree fell in the forest, and even if Winkler didn't see it, the umpiring crew should have. The ump was in the wrong here, and there's been a real problem league-wide with umpires standing on the side of their egos instead of common sense enforcement of the rules. And as others have said, Winkler was in a position to take a stand (the DH in his 99%-likely last at bat of the game), so he chose to do so.

@Weaseltube

There was 9 seconds between the play being stopped and the coach crossing into the diamond, plenty of time for him to leave the dugout when time was called, not necessarily before. And no one seems to be claiming he stepped onto the field *before* time was called, which would be an essential element of the ‘batter was right’ argument. You can even see the batter snap around to see the coach on the field after play was stopped, which you wouldn’t expect if he already knew the coach was there. Nor would you expect him to jump into position at the 9 second mark if he sees the coach walk on at 9 seconds (which would be dumb for a coach to do anyways). Instead, the batter would have turned to acknowledge the presence of the opposing coach. The other umps supported the call because it was the right call. Hate umps all you want, they still get way more calls right than wrong. At least he consulted with them, after the manager asked. And the ejection was simply the ump following through on his warning about arguing. Wouldn’t do any good to issue a warning with no consequences. At that point, might as well let the batter know how badly he screwed up. No arguing, just “you did x and y wrong”.

Any time an umpire says, "what was that?" He's literally giving you a chance to stay in the game. Don't repeat unless you want to go. That's 101 baseball umpire training. For example, someone says something that you could eject them for, but you don't want to. So you ask them" what did you say?" And if they repeat it then they go. Pretty simple.
@GregMcNeish
@GregMcNeish Год назад
Especially when - like with this case - you've already warned them that this specific thing will result in an ejection. The ump actually gave him multiple warnings as the manager was coming out, which he was blowing through, that the ump then ignored, because he clearly did not want to throw him out (probably because Winkler wasn't being an asshole). Then he still gave him the "what was that?" after the strikeout. There are plenty of examples of umps having a quick hook and being unreasonable about things. This isn't one of them.

I'm on the ump's side on this one. 1. Doesn't matter if he sees the manager on his way, time hasn't been called yet so the pitch clock is still in effect. 2. If he thinks the pitch clock is no longer in effect, why is he stepping into the box in the first place. 3. It really wasn't a quick ejection. Ump had already warned him multiple times, and even did the ump pow-wow at their request. The at-bat had proceeded and the game moved on, but the batter still didn't let it go.

I disagree with that being a "quick" ejection. From your lip reading, he had already warned him not to argue. Now, if he actually said "You blew that" or something like that, that sounds like he's arguing about it, and he's already been warned, so the ejection is warranted. Umpire gave him plenty of leash to argue and then warned him and then ejected when he picked it back up.
@Leafsdude
@Leafsdude Год назад

@XxDotApRoxX69 Год назад

@babababad
@babababad Год назад
Right before he gives him the hook, he leans in and asks Winker, "what was that?" When an ump does that, he's giving the player the chance to avoid an ejection. In that moment, the player can either say "nothing, nevermind" and stay in the game, or repeat whatever he just said and hit the showers. This is about as far from a quick ejection as you can get.
