Hi! I'm An Scott. I'm a happily retired 70 year old woman with my “golden years” on the horizon, living the “good life”, whatever that is on any given day, with my fun husband Jeff, and our “bossy” little Yorkie, Bella.
We have recently moved from southwest Florida, in the USA, to the beautiful south of France and made our new home in Nice France.
Moving from the USA to a foreign country was no small “project”. Through my videos, we’ve been taking you through the Long Stay Visa process, the packing, the purging, the moving, searching for an apartment, creating a great Dossier, learning the way things are done administratively in France, and sharing the steps, talking about what we’ve learned and the ups and the downs.
And now, we continue to share our life, our new life, here in Nice, getting settled, adjusting to the “French” way of doing things, dealing with the French “red tape” and all the while, making every wonderful day in Nice, the best day ever…

An I moved from NY ( Long Island) to the suburbs of Philly seven years ago. I have to admit I have never tried a Philly cheesesteak yet! I’ll have to try it at least once before I leave.

Yes, I grew up in Levittown PA, a suburb of Philadelphia. Both of my parents grew up in Philly---on Philadelphia cheesesteaks. Delicious! But if you can't get to Philly, check our this place in Nice for sure!

I was fully expecting you to tell us that it tastes nothing like the vrai Philly cheesesteak, but quelle suprise! And were you as successful in your quest for a good bagel? (I am from NY, so very picky😄). On a different subject: how much do you expect to pay for the carte vitale if you are retired in France? Is it a percentage of your US income? I am fuzzy on that subject...Thanks!

The closest I have come to an "edible/ok" bagel are the frozen ones I picked up at Picard, a store that sells high quality frozen foods, shown in our video from last Sunday. They taste like "Lenders" bagels from the US. Far from perfect, but better than all I have tried out at cafes. I hope to find a Jewish deli in the US or even from the Marais in Paris, that will ship bagels to Nice. And if not, c'est la vie". As far as our Carte Vitale, it will cost us 0. We do not have an earned income in France. They do not count our Social Security as income. So, unless we opt to purchase a top up or mutuelle plan to cover our co-pays, our Carte Vitale which is really just the ID card you present to get reimbursed by the France government for healthcare costs, will be 0. We will still have to pay co-pays, if any, but the government reimburses around 70%. My last doctor charged me 30 Euros for an appointment. When I'm on the health system, that same office visit will cost me 9 Euros out of pocket! And if you have a lifetime disease, like diabetes, the National Healthcare System covers ALL related expenses at 100%!

@@postcardsfromourgoldenyears Thanks for the info, An. It confirms what I read online, but I had a hard time believing that the French government would give us, foreigners, free healthcare, when we did not contribute into it during our working years! But I guess that's socialism at its best. I found 4 Kosher/bagel places in Nice on TripAdvisor with varied reviews, but I guess you've tried them already. To me, it sounds like a good excuse to visit le Marais🤣

@@7314jazzyyes, the Marais in Paris is a great place to find as close to a Jewish deli as I have found in France. It doesn't have the same ambiance as a NY Jewish deli but they do have Jewish delicacies like lox and bagels, chopped liver, kasha varnishkas, matzo ball soup, etc. Unfortunately I don't remember the name or location. I sorta stumbled upon it a few years ago.
