Uncharted FAILS as a Video Game Movie - REVIEW! 

Sometimes it's just enough to see the cast for a movie to know how it will end up. This is one of these times. It's not bad, just mediocre. Remember when there was this short Uncharted-video on RU-vid with Nathan Fillion and Stephen Lang? We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close.

So in the game, Nathan as a young teen, pickpockets Sully who was working with one of the villains and when they caught him, Marlowe (the villain) wanted to kill Nate and Sully helped him escape and took him under his wing. He learned all that fighting from him.

Personally speaking even though I’m excited to watch this I’m still highly skeptical of this film being good from what I’ve heard so far. I wish they had casted Nathan Fillion as well. But I’m willing to give Tom Holland a chance.

I actually thought the Nightclub in the middle of the hidden rooms was pretty funny. After all it was located in central Barcelona so after 500 years it's not weird that someone found the space during that time and first maybe used it as storage and then down the line a nightclub.

The film is the first feature production of Sony's PlayStation Productions. After finishing filming, Tom Holland began filming Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) just days later. The movie took some inspiration from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016), which is Tom Holland's favorite video game in the series. Mark Wahlberg stated in an interview with IGN that he's only signed for one film. First Naughty Dog video game to get a film treatment. HBO later announced a TV adaptation of another Naughty Dog game, The Last of Us (2013). Bryan Cranston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pratt, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were all being considered for Sully before the role went to Mark Wahlberg. Tom Holland was cast as Nathan Drake after Sony turned down his pitch for a Young James Bond movie. Tom Holland calls his plane scene the hardest action sequence he's ever made. Mark Wahlberg compared the movie to Indiana Jones and The Thomas Crown Affair with elements of heist movies and adventure movies. Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North revealed in a interview with Trisha Hershberger that he doesn't feel the movie should be a direct adaptation anyway and even thought of Chris Pine who he worked on Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) as Drake. Shawn Levy was hired to direct the film but then decided to drop from the project. Travis Knight was attached to direct the film but later dropped out due to scheduling issues. Dan Trachtenberg was hired to direct the film, but dropped out due to creative differences. Nolan North: the voice of Nathan Drake in the "Uncharted" video games, appears as a hotel guest. When opening the trunk containing the postcards, a Naughty Dog sticker can be seen, Naughty Dog is the game studio behind the Uncharted franchise. One of the Gold Nuggets Drake hands Sully at the end of the Film resembles a Precursor Orb from the Jak & Daxter games, another Game developed by Naughty Dog & appears as an Item in every Uncharted Game. The film follows the traditional plot of the games by starting with Nathan Drake in imitate danger. As well as the reoccurring theme of finding the treasure first, but never actually getting (all of) it. Except for a few medallions In the game there is a special achievement that will unlock golden guns. Drake is holding a golden gun in the mid-credit scene at the end of the film. The cargo plane fight and having the film start in the middle of the story are both references to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. It's this scene that Nolan North, the voice actors for Drake in the games, is referring to when Nathan and Chloe come on site

I expected another „Cooking with Flickster” paid promotion, said to myself: ok, I can live with that….instead I experienced so much more.

I personally would have cast Oliver Jackson Cohen as Nathan Drake. He’s the right age and looks way more like him. I enjoyed the movie a lot but what bothered me most was now Nate’s music theme was barely ever even utilized. I also couldn’t wrap my head around why Jo was Jo instead of Nadine.

Few years ago, Fillion and Lang made a short video playing Drake and Sully. That was great. They should cast them in the movie

Stick with the games, they’re pretty much interactive/playable summer blockbusters. I can’t understand why Hollywood doesn’t realize that at least 95% of video games today have cinematic sequences and storytelling and not just Mario jumping around and collecting power-ups. But then again, they’re only goal is to make money. I’m hoping the HBO Last of Us show is decent since we’re talking about adaptations of Naughty Dog games.

One good thing about this movie, is when I went home and rewatched Indiana Jones after, it made me appreciate it even more in comparison to how awful Uncharted was.

I just saw this movie and it was pretty good even though you pointed out out those flaws and I noticed them anyway in the movie. Proper physics don't exist in this movie. Mark Wahlberg, " Hey, what are you doin down there? Do ya find any treasure?" My other favorite treasure hunt movie is probably The Goonies or National treasure 2 or any of the original 3 Indiana Jones movies. Most treasure hunt movies are good. More recently I like Red Notice. I was pleasently surprised by Kung fu Yoga and Dora the Explorer.

As someone who enjoys the movie and is a fan of games, I can say this - Movie has this problem, that it's not connected to the games, story is different and will never be prequel, but they treat the characters like "we won't tell you much, you played the games, you know it". Also the fact that Nathan in movie is indestructable is someone that I would expect, in games he basically is only one that survived plane crash on the desert. It's not a masterpiece, but I felt it that it's Uncharted movie.

Thx for the review, as a HUGE Uncharted Fan I feared this movie would exactly be what you describe. I’ve rarely seen such an epic miscast. Mark f***ing Wahlberg as Sully? Gimme a break. Sully is likeable old badass and a father figure to Nathan. Mark Wahlberg is none of that. Ps: respect bro for pulling of a non creepy nor cringeworthy shower scene. 😅

My biggest takeaway is how “Disney” this movie went. Nathan felt like a side character being dragged along by Chloe and Sully the whole time. He didn’t have any edge to him, whereas in the games he’s a thief, murderer, and womanizer, but is charismatic and endearing to play as. Tom was horrendously miscast and I’m assuming it was only to appease the Spider-man fan base. Here, he did nothing but mope, get his ass kicked, and didn’t kill or fight anyone really. What a disappointment of potential!

Easily Triple Frontier on Netflix. An unabated masterpiece.

I'm a big fan of the games and I didn't hate it. It wasn't great, but it was fun. While Nathan Fillion could have done this 12 -15 years ago, he's just crossed the 50 year old mark so starting an adventure franchise at that age doesn't make sense. He'd be pushing 60 by the third movie. Holland's casting wasn't just because of his Spider-man fame. The guy's got a good screen presence and if he's able to step out of the shadow of Spidey and pick his projects well, he'll be around for a long time. I thought he did a respectable job as a young Drake. I will agree that makeup wise, they should have banged him up a bit more. That's what made Indiana Jones more relatable. Wahlberg was...Wahlberg. He did fine. The script had some issues, particularly when it was trying to be more clever than it needed to be. All the character doublecrossing was a bit much because only one of them was kind of earned. The rest served to just be a "twist" that didn't feel natural and wasted the potential of a good villain. As for the nightclub scene, at first I thought it was a bit corny, but after thinking about it, it was somewhat realistic in that hidden chambers are harder to keep hidden in modern times, especially in big cities, so that didn't bother me. I thought the movie paid proper tribute to the games in various spots, such as starting the movie out in the middle and then going back like the games do. If they are going to do sequels, they definitely need to step up their game in the script department, because while the main treasure hunt storyline was fine, the journey was definitely muddled. I hope in the sequels they introduce the supernatural edge the games had as well.

I maybe the only person with this opinion but that’s why it’s mine, I knew this wasn’t gunna be good but I went in to this movie and quickly realized it as one huge cut scene. You could tell it was trying to be overly video game centric and at times I thought I was doing a puzzle solving thing but as a shut off my brain movie i buy it. It’s not faithful and not winning any awards but in a way it’s dumb and fun. Not a fav not overly terrible just meh 🤷🏼‍♂️at the end of the day keep doin you John you one of the best dude.
