When I married my husband, I quickly found out where I really stood as a married Mormon woman.... I was informed that " I was supposed to do what my husband wanted, when he wanted it, and I was informed that he owned me." " Because he payed for everything, and I was to answer to him." We lasted at the 21 year married mark, and we divorced! A man who believed he was the only one in charge, and that he was always, "right." The church I don't think is aware or frankly cares, what actually often happens within the walls of some homes. I'm the lesser woman, with no voice, and can be easily replaced, like a worn out pair of shoes.

Keep in mind that those who took the throat-slitting path prior to 1990 (such as i did); ARE STILL UNDER THOSE OATHS. One only takes the time oaths (ONCE) for one's self. After the first visit, you take the oaths "in proxy" for a dead person. When the oaths were changed (post-1990), those who took the "death oaths" were never required to rescind those original death oaths. THEY. ARE. STILL. IN. EFFECT. (i rescinded my oaths formally in a "ceremony" created by a psychologist, after having my records removed. It's not necessary, but it helped psychologically to "clear the slate"). Great presentation.

I have watched the first three episodes and wow I’m shocked at how accurate they have the temple and Bishops interviews and everything! From an ex Mormon this is hitting me so hard so sad. @duckylmexican

Sadly, domestic abuse is very common among the LDS church behind closed doors. I love how they’re accurately depicting how the priesthood and patriarchy in the church is abusive against the women and girls in it that they have to “honor the priesthood/priesthood holders”. My older brother teases the missionaries that he’ll start taking lessons again and return to church when his daughter (my niece) can carry the priesthood herself someday. They always reply back that it probably will never happen and he just tells them, “They said the same thing about black people. I’ll wait.” Lol.

As a never mo teen in the late 80's in the Mormon corridor I remember having a conversation with a woman in her 90's who left the church. She described her wedding night in a rural Mormon community where the elders of her church had their way with her as a right of their leadership. She was very lucid and cried during the entire story. Her husband was not aware that this was going to happen. They stayed together and left the church together. Back in her day I bet there were a lot of rural communities who ran the wards the way they saw fit.

I would highly reccomend Dustin Lance Black's (the screenwriter) book 'Mama's boy'. In this, he tells the story of his mother, who was converted to mormonism by missionaries visiting the children's hospital she live in throughout her childhood, as she was paralysed from polio. Thus, a religion which promises an eternal family and a perfect body in the afterlife was deeply appealing to her, a disabled teen living away from her family, who throughout her childhood was repeatedly told she would never have a family of her own. She was an incredible woman, and not really the lds housewife stereotype, working to a high level in the military, being married multiple times, and eventually accepting her gay sons. It is the best book I've ever read, and the best narrated audiobook I've ever listened to.

They didn’t portray mainstream Mormons very realistically at all. It makes it easy for “the real” Mormons to point and say, “so glad our brand of Mormonism is so normal” and that the Laffertys were outliers. And they were, but they were born of and created by the mainstream church. I look at the FLDS (Jeffries) and think, “that is the Mormon church without the proclamation which saved them from themselves.”

I don't actually know anything about this case, I think. i DO know a good deal about the Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell case, which is another tale of LDS religious fanaticism spiralling out of control and leading to at least two murders (probably three, but that's less proven). Have you ever talked about that case before? @Maizzy Agreed. Religions that teach people it is okay to murder someone if your leader, or "God" tells you to do it are inspiring people to murder others. The Mormon Church inspired these murders by claiming The Book of Mormon is the Word of God and the "most correct book" on earth. In the opening pages of The Book of Mormon Nephi murders a man named Laban because he is sure God is telling him to murder him. God then rewards Nephi by making him Prophet over all the people. Do you think the murderers were inspired by the example of Nephi committing murder? The Mormon Church sure holds him up as THE HERO, when he is a murderer.

Instead of paying the fines, they ran more cattle, completely ruining the local ecology. When BLM agents tried to step in and do something about it, they were met with an armed militia that had snipers training their weapons on federal agents' heads from the freeway overpasses. I agree with you that this show will open everyone up to the Church's past history and some of its current culture as well. If the Church ever wants to move forward and "grow" for the better.... it has to be completely open and honest about it's past, and how it continues to negatively affect the entire Mormon culture. This is your best podcast on your own so far. This is the quality that I expected to get from you. Very well done. Speaking of violence, D&C Section 132 says that Emma Smith ought to be "destroyed" if she refuses to support polygamy. I read the book, and I've met with some polygamists a few years ago. For me, enough is enough. Going to BYU for six years gave me my fill of "Mormon Culture". I grew up in the Northwest. The members up there were great when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's. But Utah culture is completely different, and I can't stand it. So, I'm glad that there are people who still love it and want to improve it.

The Temple endowment was changed around 1991, so what you see in the series is what the endowment ceremony and initiation were like from the 1930s and until 1991. So, it’s not your current ceremony, so you shouldn’t be bothered by it. Before 1991, every person getting married or endowed was required to make the gestures of disemboweling themselves and also of slitting their own throats. This is the violence that leads to murder, which is the very murder The Book of Mormon promotes. So, as long as the Church promotes the Book of Mormon as the Word of God then we have a problem.
@GMoney-B

@@KidsandKittens217 Dude, these two guys were psychopaths, completely devoid of remorse when questioned for years after. Nephi as depicted in the BOM felt tremendous question and remorse/hesitation. You can't say it leads to murder when this is a one of instance with the lafferty brothers with the (disembroiling gesture specifically). I am questioning a lot of things about the church as well the last few years, but as a member my entire life in it's current form. The church teaches nothing of violence, murder or anything like that like so many people try to still say about current church teachings or members/leaders. While it sounds exciting to some with conspiracies behind closed doors and all that, nothing at least in current day is taught of that nature, at least now. What I'm worried about from discussion is that of harmful or judgmental discussion towards current leaders and members especially from this show, is that most people are just good people trying to do their best. By all means go after church history and the massive inconsistencies(which I am wanting to look into and know for myself), but just treat current members and their current beliefs with respect. It means a lot to them(current teachings) even if it doesn't to you. I agree with everything else being talked about though that people should know for themselves and not just blindly follow.

I really appreciate this (btw looking beautiful as usual). I really feel the need for honest conversation re; how fanaticism combined with polygamy and belief in blood oaths can lead good people to do bad things. We are all capable of doing this while earnestly believing it to be Gods will. I am a direct descendant of the Haight family and this is something that is very hard for me personally to accept and live with. What about the, on average, 20 murders in Chicago that occur every weekend? You never give that issue a second look, but when some rando you don't know goes crazy (literally in the medical sense) in the name of a religion you are unfamiliar with, you seem to judge members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as lumped in with their ilk. That kind of selective attention is destructive to good people's lives.

My issue is that if you know that former prophets of the church are guilty of putting out false doctrine, how do you believe ANY of the doctrine of the church? Joseph Smith’s history is problematic. He was accused of being a con-man and was brought before a judge. The charges didn’t result in a sentence. But if he was suspected of being a con-man before he supposedly found the plates, it isn’t a huge stretch to believe his vision and all that came after was a HUGE con.

The arrogance of the patriarchy displayed in this is still going on in present day Mormons. I would further add the how funny it is in Mormonism the importance of a surname. I thought to myself, “Okay, mom and dad are here, the Bishop and his wife are here, there’s my young women’s counselor, etc., and if they think this is okay, I guess I’ll stick it out and see.” Talk about coercive - waiting until you’re inside and the ceremony has begun and your support group is there and invested in your participation AND THEN tell you that you can leave if you don’t want to proceed BEFORE you know what you’re getting yourself into.
