In this video Jay Robarge will explain a very common concern with Ford C4 and C6 transmissions. He will explain how the 2-3 shift is accomplished in these units and what causes the dreaded and annoying 2-3 shift flare problems.
Don't worry about the length of the videos. It's good when you include some of the important details. Your valve body along with a new Sonnax R servo took care of my flare and made the auto shifts have the exact firmness I wanted in my C6 over 10 years now.
I always watch the whole thing and will watch it many more times. Can't thank you enough for these videos. Appreciate your time and experience. I now feel confident rebuilding my C6 and will be getting my VB and every other part I can from you.
your videos are not boring to a person that is always looking for knowledge, im thankfull to the point that im going to rebuilt my own trans with help from your videos, keep them coming, thanks.
Thank you for the information, I too have experienced this same issue using JW & TCI reverse manual valve bodies, two different shops could not remedy it. I eventually converted to a TH400 but always wondered what the problem was with the C6 and the fix for it.
Unfortunately too many people get told they have to go to a 400 in order to get rid of the flare. Just bad valve body designs and lack of understanding the unit.
Not boring at all! I'm very much enjoying your videos and particularly enjoyed this one where you go into the details of the servo circuit. I have a FWD manual C4 VB of yours and also a REV T/Brake C4 VB of yours (the type you built with a C5 core). Looking forward to more videos like this one!
My c6 shifts incredible with your TB RMVB. I have basically everything you sell in my c6 but built locally. You’re the best in the business imo with the ford stuff
Very interesting. I always learn a lot from your videos. I previously had 2-3 shift flare problems on my race C4. My trans builder fixed them but never told me what actually fixed the issue. I thought he mentioned extra clearance (worn) in the rev/high drum clutches. Could that also be a source of the 2-3 flare? Right now my rev/manual trans brake valve body is working correctly, but when it comes time to replace it, I will surely be looking at one of yours for a future purchase, because of your knowledge and explanations of the 2-3 flare up. Thanks for the educational videos.
I was always impressed with the old Ford o Matics from the 1950s. They were two speed in drive with a low gear. But the automatic shift was always 2-3. I drove Ford and Mercury cars with these transmissions for many years. The 2-3 shift was very fast with no shift flair. These were designed by Borg Warner engineers for Ford. I have to wonder why Ford when they designed the C4 and C6 did not use a similar circuit design that Borg Warner did in the Ford O Matics. I have looked at both hydraulic circuits but have been unable to understand why they shift so different from each other. The old Ford o Matics may have the secret to better C4 and C6 shifting.
Jay, I have a 2-3 Flared shift with a CD4E that's in a 2007 Ford escape 4WD V6, do you know if that transmission uses the same type of hydraulics to produce the 2-3 shift? I'm inclined toward a bad shift solenoid, because it's electronic, or the Intermediate or 2nd gear band servo.
I have a question about getting the 1-2 &the 2-3 valves that stuck in a c4. I was able to get all out but the back valve out.Could find a magnet strong enough for it to pull it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello Jay, I have a valve body I installed one of your old reverse manual kits into maybe 20 years ago it is a kit I see you no longer list on your site and I wonder if that kit applies oil in this same way? I only wonder because after all of these years I think mine is starting to have a very slight 2-3 flair I am wondering if this is just a sign that I am getting close to ready for a refresh or if that older kit did not have the apply oil there like your newer kits. I also am wondering if you still offer that kit just not listed? That kit did not require a billet lower valve body like your newer kit does and was less expensive too. It does not have engine braking in low gear either if that makes any difference. Thank You for any info you can share. Love your videos and glad I found them. Subscribed and look forward to watching when you post.
I believe the kit you are referring to was discontinued about 15 years ago and replaced by a newer and better design. That one did not use release oil.
Thank You for the reply, I might have to get one of your newer kits then or just refresh this old build as it has performed well until now. @@BroaderPerformance
I wish I could find a color scheme of the valve body like you were showing in that I have one in the book but it does not have it colored it's all just trails of fluid
Its an old Ford training manual back when technicians actually learned this stuff and not just how to swap the trans out like they do today. It's an obsolete book.
Hey, Could this also apply for Chevy Cruze 6T40 2nd gen transmission with the same flare issue? This happens only when the car warms up and is worse under load in hot days. Would an aftermarket TCM software update help? I also heard slightly overfilling the ATF can help build slightly higher pressure.
If a 6T40 has shift issues, there is internal damage in the unit. No TEHCM update will fix it. Too much oil in the unit won't raise pressures, it will likely either cause leaks or foaming of the oil, which causes a drop in pressures. Your 6T40 needs rebuilt.
@@platoscave911 This is the hydraulic fluid that has the EP additive for gear boxes, right? The reason I asked about type F is because I remembered for some reason, that it contains a friction modifier the clutch disks need.
It could help because the apply side is larger and in theory will slow the release unless of course your valve body exhausts the fluid on the apply side like I explained in this video then it will make no difference.
