I can’t thank you enough for this. I’ve had one at L5 for years. Medrol Pak and 5 days of pain meds 2-3 times per year. What really helped me feel better was your description of the pain. It’s like a lightning bolt and I’m instantly debilitated. FYI. All orthos I’ve ever seen demand to see me before prescribing. The problem is: I CANNOT move for a day and cannot drive for 3-4. Just leaving that as an input. This was a terrific video. Thank you.

Scheduled for L4-S1 discectomy and fusion first part of next year. I'm freaking out. You did a good job at explaining it. I have done PT, injections in my spine...nothing is working and on a good day I'm like level 3-4 pain...a bad day I'm in tears with 8-9 level pain. I'm over it.

My doctor want to do surgery as right away. Even before my bone density test. His assistant listened when I asked about alternatives. I started consistent core exercises and plan to start using a mini trampoline. I’ll be getting the injection in a few weeks for immediate relief, I hope…

I have spondylolisthesis L4 over L5 grade 1. But I feel so much better since I started doing floor exercises to strengthen my core and hamstrings. The difference is night & day. However, I still want to stay well-informed about my condition and I happened to bump into this video and it was very informative. It really helped to remind me to take good care of my spine and do everything to not worsen it. Thank you for this wonderful video, Dr. Good.

I was diagnosed at 11 and had my first surgery at that age. 20 years later my fusion is still stable. I wish I had all this info growing up

I have that problem right now and trying to figure out which surgery is best suits me without having to have revision surgery

Dr Good, The best video of this condition I've seen or heard. I have been to 6 Neuro and Spine surgeons in the NY area: Primo ones ) Mt. Sinai, Columbia Presb are 2 ). I do have significant DDD and facet arthritis and since these conditions are present, the success ratio was low. You describe a very pragmatic and common sense approach. I've been to Chiros, PTs, Acupuncturists, etc... Chronic Pain (varies from 4- 7.5 , never a 10 Thank God) but terrible Stiffness and Muscle tension. Oh Yeah, from my 1 inch shorter right leg sustained as a result of a fractured femur at age 15 (Thank You HS Football), I'm 69 now, and the Trauma has resulted in Dextroscoliosis , at 25 degrees , hip arthritis and the spinal maladies has gravitated to the Neck / Thoracic spines too. In fact the Neck is terribly stiff causing ear, teeth, and jaw pain with temporal headaches and TMJ issues. Many parts of my spine - you van hear the loud cricks and cracks - the neck is so loud, my wife asks me to leave the room. But with all these maladies, my PM doctor just told me that teh Lumbar MRI in 2011 showed this spondy condition at L5-S1. I take every Anti Inflammatory supplement known to mankind: Turmeric, Boswellia, Bromelian, Ginger, Proelytic enzymes, MSM, Collagen, Flaxseed and Fish Oil, etc., etc., I wish there was This Magic Wand available, but clearly there is not. Your opinion would be a big help. THX

Hi Chris, great video...I have spondi L5-S1 with an "obliteration of the spinal disc and 21mm overhang".....it bothers me every so often with tight back and cannot straighten up...usually rest , massage, exercises help and it goes away for months at a time...my concern is 8 yrs ago it was at 11mm overhang and has moved 10 mm since....am I on my way to grade 3 or 4 if I don't fix it soon...I play softball, golf, hockey and workout and I will be 60 in a few months....any thoughts would help.....thanks

That was a great presentation ! My dr suggested fusion on 4 levels, but I am hesitant. I have other issues also C5-7. IHeard so much about the problems people get in other areas that get stressed after fusion, so the lack of alignment might explain how that happens ?

I was diagnosed with High grade 2 L5 S-1 Spondylolisthesis in 2015. I had not pain or problems until I had a slip and fall in 2010. Im not having numbness in my legs, but the pain in the back is getting worse. Not one Dr has ever mentioned special exercises for this condition. I'm afraid of becoming paralized by this condition.

So what exactly is the surgery mentioned at 8:30 called? About inserting a cage to correctly align the spine? I think I need that with my L5S1!

Hey doctor, thank you for ur explanations. I have a grade 2 spondy . I am an athlete , very active 56 year old. Long story short. I was a wrestler and wrestling coach . I have dealt with this since I was 17. I retire from teaching and coaching three years ago and started a custom cabinetry business and have gotten where I’m really struggling again. Pain has now settled in my hip and left leg. Would you be willing to do a zoom or FaceTime consultation? I have seen three surgeon s and all have a little different approach. From researching I think minimally invasive approach seems the way to go. He surgeon I saw yesterday at Duke says he would do mine with open surgery. My disc has completely collapsed now and he said he liked the open method so he had more room for realignment . He said he would be able to realign about 50percent. Two others said they probably would not try and realign because mi e has been at this position for so long. Not sure what to do. Please help. Thanks again

I have slippage 8mm forward, 4mm backward and 5mm in upright position. Grade 1 Spondylolisthesis. So I understand that is a slippage/displacement. The xray does not specifically state unstable. Does slippage mean unstable spondylolisthesis? I hope you can help me with this question unstable or stable. How close is this type of diagnosis to stage 2. TIA!!!

I had this surgery L5 S1 almost ten years ago I’ve started having trouble with sciatica pain again in the same leg and back pain has increased despite my exercise to strengthen my core. Could this mean my surgery has failed or I have new slippage going on ?
