I love how this game handles the “bad” stuff. As in, like you said, poison isnt usually what kills things, but some team comps *need* that poison to even work. Its so satisfying to make mechanics be part of the team’s core and not just mechanics for the sake of it.
I'm not sure if this bit is part of the platinum or not, but the best bit of story/character writing came from the "rush Zenoira immediately before rescuing Scarlett" option, which I'm guessing very few people would end up doing. **Spoilers for that section** They actually kill off Scarlett and make you fight against her Zenoiran counterpart, and the voice acting for those scenes were really good, especially since it's the only time you get to see Alain actually have to encounter something that doesn't go his way. It's even better on a second playthrough, since you also get to see the mind-controlled versions of the bestrals you didn't get to recruit. I think if they had more moments like that spread throughout the game, especially when going down the true ending which 90% of players probably did, would help make the story and charactes feel a lot more interesting. Gameplay is still S+ tier tho
Really enjoyed the video! As someone who never really grew up with strategy RPGs and really only picked this up due to loving 13 Sentinels; I really got sucked into the gameplay loop of making team comps (even if like halfway through I just ran with what I already had trying to make Bruno good). I'll have to try True Zenorian at some point as I'm sure it'll make team comp building more intense. Bruno best girl unless your name is Rosalinde
I hope Vanillaware either make a fighting game or a MetroiVania/Rogue-like game. Playing Odinsphere now and I think they’ve got what it takes to make such games. Maybe if they get into the FGC they’ll have huge loyal following.
lol yeah considering odin sphere let's you assign moves to quarter circles and dp's whatnot, i feel like there's nonzero chance they've thought about it, though honestly i dont see a vanillaware fighting game being anything but niche (but i would definitely play it)
@@theredgroovechannel if it has designs similar to Dragon’s Crown I’m sure the FGC will tweet the hell out of it. Just look at Dead or Alive before the censorship debacle and the micro transactions. Vanillaware could make a name in EVO if they’re willing to make such a game.
@@rotonek2887you don’t need established IP to make a fighting game franchise. When Arksys lost the rights for Guilty Gear they just made Blazblue. DBZ fighters and Marvel vs. Capcom may be more notable but Guilty Gear nowadays is quite mainstream and due to Persona and RWBY collabing in Cross Tag their respective fandoms have now been exposed to Blazblue and Under Night. Anime Fighters are less reliant on other established IP due to more avenues for exposure. And Vanillaware would get a lot of exposure if they cameoed Dragon Crown characters in their fighting games.
6:50 Sadly.... I am that person. I bought FF Tactics on the PS1 when it came out and was so excited but quickly realized I was way to damn Dumb for strategy games. So over the years I have been on the outside looking in when it comes to strategy games. Enjoying the art work, wishing I could join in on the other parts of them that I love but just generally watching what other people are doing in them and stuff. However, the Demo of this game really sold me. For whatever reason it was just clicking as I was playing and I couldn't even believe I was planning and playing properly in one of these games and the losses only served to make me learn a major lesson. Anyways, I am so grateful for this game for getting me into strategy for the first time ever.
I got horribly addicted to this game from the moment I started it, dumped like 85 hours in a week and a half and basically 100 percented it. The difficulty was definitely an issue because you have all the time in the world to prepare a godsquad and the enemy simply cannot adapt in any way (but I did spend way too much time maximizing the squads so that one's on me). I wouldn't consider the basic story a flaw, it's inoffensive (unlike BL3) and doesn't require much focus (unlike 13 Sentinels) so you get to focus more on the frankly brilliant gameplay and systems (sometimes with a nice video essay in the background). Glad this game is getting more love!

I really appreciate vanillaware putting the time and effort into their collector's edition, it's unique and has charm. Compare that to the vast majority of others today and you get like dlc codes upon dlc codes for in-game items to make the game easier? like what? I'm playing on the hardest difficulty for a reason.
so I beat the game yesterday with over 160 hours in my file and I did not know you could have multiple movement points for one unit to go to subsequently like in the clip at 3:50 .Whenever I wanted to make specific moves for a unit I’d do it one point at a time and I saw that clip and was dumbfounded at myself Edit: 18:10 that is literally the exact same recolour I put on Virginia in my play through, good taste

Really good video! You mentioned the Ring of Maiden bit fleshing out characters and the lack of intensely emotional material for the voiced lines, and I can only remember the "Bad true ending" scenes you get if you choose the "wrong" option after the final fight against Galerius. Your chosen maiden gets a LOT of dialogue in that scene, and really drills in how deep the bond between you and your maiden really is. It's a shame, however, that most players will go for the "good true ending" with barely any maiden dialogue, and miss out on these scenes. Unless they go back to the final fight and pick the other choice out of curiosity - was there an achievement for getting the other ending? I played on Switch so I wouldn't know, lol. Once again, really good video! I'll definitely check your Fire Emblem content too, keep up the good work!
Chloe actually has a kid with Alain in her ending. Plus Alain being himself with her feels like she's the definitive choice. I was torn between her and Berengaria, but the ending had her remake the Tricorns. So Chloe edged out for being the best choice for me. Nina was my 3rd choice.
Really enjoyed this game! I dumped 90+hours in as my first strategy RPG. I actually haven’t beat it just yet… (the gimmick of the last battle screwed me over and I have yet to pick it back up for a retry)
Dude when people did reviews of this and compared it to all kinds of different games it would drive me completely insane.(like fft and blah blah had e blah) like, nah it's literally almost 80% ogre battle ,like it's similar enough I can no longer distinguish the differences from my snes memories. I definitely felt the same man. I idolize ogre battle and played sooooo much when I was a wee child and i always just assumed that they had abandoned the US market (which they did ) It definitely feels a little off somewhat, like maybe too much of a love letter to Ogre Battle overall?
I played it for fifty hours on the switch before learning it wasn't a switch exclusive. The load times can be noticeable and I had the game hitch on some AoE spells, but that's about all the criticism I can make on performance. It's otherwise sublime. (I married Travis)

yknow its funny, this game feels so old fashioned in some ways that i didnt even consider that it would get updates after release lol but hey if swordmasters are better now, im happy, but i'll be heartbroken if they make vanguards good

I really enjoyed this game but if they do a sequel they need to really put some effort into their character and story writing. Thats really my only problem with the game.
I saw this game during nintendo direct a while ago, said lie hey that looks like a fire emblem rip off kinda then forgot about it until I saw that there seems to be no fe game in development the next 2 directs, watched your other short video on it and thought fuck it why not, and yeah I definitely had a lot of fun with it. I played two full playthroughs, the first was on like tactical or story or whatever the easiest difficulty was, I did that trick on that one really early level 40 map to cheese it with the sellsword ability to spawn mercenaries and just powerlevelled then steamrolled through so wasn't really any remote instance of challenge given I had at least 1 over levelled unit on every squad and the massive stamina increase and unlimited items and what not of lower difficulties. Played it again on true Zenoiran and like there just wasn't much of a challenge even then, I hired only the lowest level generics just to guard towns and never used a single one in actual combat making me feel like they're completely unnecessary to actually beat the game at all and are just there for fun and besides the occassional wind faerie charm if there was a hidden archer or wizard nearby or maybe roasted nuts if I just needed one more stamina I didn't even need many items like the game is just really easy even on the maximum difficulty. That said the final chapter was a different story, the minute I had to fight Galarius it was the most ridiculous shit ever (I'm going to yap a lot about it now so don't read if you don't wanna know about it) I had to pull everyone back into a fort, design the best counter team I could with what I had trained up (didn't have any swordmasters trained or anything to negate his tanks first 6 hits of combat ability because they just didnt seem like very good units) and best I could come up with was a team that mostly got around 275 - 325 damage before he healed up 200 of that and then I just made one range assist team to help reroll and occasionally do a bit of extra damage if rng worked in my favour. I also had to keep deploying another squad that had Aubin on it so he could use his vitalise skill to give 2 extra stamina and then undeploying them to give back a single valor point just so my power squad could succeed in barely killing Galarius there. For the entire rest of the game I had 6 different squads that were sepcialised in different things, 4 of which were cavalry team leaders and 2 fliers and obviously all 6 were designed to take on full teams of 5 but in the final battle I had to redesign and build this single perfect team to counter a single lone boss with 1000 HP, it was like the arena again but at least there you could cheese it with a single thief since you didn't have to kill the boss to win, just do more damage but here it was just so tedious and something that you really just aren't really prepared for in any way. I'm not even against the idea because again the game is so easy and if you're playing on the max difficulty it's not unfair for them to expect you to know and prepare for it but just the fact that it was so easy the first time around meant I had no idea to do that. Anyways that was a massive pain but other than that I enjoyed almost everything else and after beating it and another less hard but still kinda stupid phase of the fight I at least felt like the game challenged me and made me earn the completion on true zenoiran even if all the difficulty was in just the last part of the last map.
I got rly bothered by the story when they tried to slightly guilt trip me after i sent a guy to prison at the beginning, because the game thinks that pillaging, killing and stealing is fine as long as you're doing for some random schmuck's sick sister. Also there was this Gaston lord that they tried REALLY HARD to make him look like a villain... but he was just... rationing food, no one was going hungry, dude's just preparing for winter, also with war happening, famine always comes later (war which YOU started), and Alain is like "he is evil because he's stealing food from the people!" Ffs who is this for, 5 year olds? The game is great overall, but the story is really childish at times

Here.. let me help, you see they will always use Volcano because u have them to Prioritize Armored, and that is never fail-able because it's not Exclusive, it's "Try to hit Armors if u can" not "Aim for Armored, if non, then go next" and because of that they will NEVER use the other moves, but... That is nothing when comparing it to the.. Passive Point part... PP 1.Vanitas>Own PP is =2 or < 2.Concetrate>Own PP is =3 or < 3.Poison Burst>Poisoned 4.Magick Pursuit>Own PP is =2 or < 5.Magick Counter>Own PP is =2 or < W.. Wow... These are simultaneously Worse And Better then the AP ones, here. The better part is, Congratulations I can Actually see what your trying to do!!! The Bad part is, ITS DONE SOOO BADLY IT ONLY BAAERLYY WORKS! I see what your trying to do, use 1 to poison then then u use 3 and BOOM! But its done in such a way the only 2 PP skills your use is 1 and 3 (and sometimes 4) because again, not only is the Priority done wrong, but your never use specific skills like this (then again, not like u have the PP for it, you shouldn't even have 5 (and maybe 4) on the list so u can make room for other things like, for example, a Copying 3 to 5 and make it target Lowest Mag-Def and Lowest HP% so that u won't waste the point even if no one's poisoned). It's Ben a long time now (like 15-30 minutes) and me getting tired of typing, but please for my whiddle silly-willy heart, (and my eyes(Me playing on EXPERT)... Get good... Also, I hope I wasn't too harsh, I'm not Trying to bully u or anything like that, I, can't clearly remember what I typed near the beginning now so hopefully it wasn't to bad, my recommendation?
