UniFi Dynamic Routing - OSPF - the pfsense gap is getting smaller

The usable feature gap between UniFi and pfsense is getting smaller all the time. UniFi now has dynamic routing on the LAN side via OSPF. Spotted in the latest early access version I don't think they'll pull this out. I think OSPF (open shortest path first) can only get better from here!

The erosion of (noun here)BSD is pretty much guaranteed to put Netgate in a bad spot sooner than later. If Unifi understands that, and can offer something based not on the (dying is too strong a word, but certainly) withering branch of the Unix family tree on par with/equal to pfsense they could be looking at some serious market share capture. Therein, however, is the catch. When you and Google compete for projects started, then dropped/randomly ended, any plans requiring stability, focus and follow through become more questions rather than an answer. So far the router portion of their l3 switches have not been worth the space of the switch if you actually need l3 features. I would absolutely love if that was not the case. Party all night and day when cisco gets taken around the back and netgate has to make pricing changes for the appliances they sell in the down direction. No way that even starts happening this year. Check back in 4-5 years, see if they remembered to keep this project going.

Been using UniFi switches and AP for clients for years with either Netgate/Pfsense or Edgerouters … looks like I need to keep an eye on the UniFi firewalls. The new USG-ultra is an appealing price / performance package.

I still think that the UDM Pro/SE needs a hardware refresh. But overall this update is great news!

This is a big deal. I do see it from a different perspective, though; networking is changing; just what seems like a few years ago, the network admins were looked upon as special people who sat in a room, looked at a cursor flashing, and typed "magic" to make things work. More people are moving to SDN for networking and point-and-click; the terminals are harder to get to, and often discouraged from using them. Network admin is changing; I admittedly sometimes struggle going backward, I know what I want, how to do it, finding how the GUI of some devices are built, and the steps they want me to take to do it vary between devices.

What Unifi really needs is an enterprise version of UDM that actually is able to perform as a true NGFW, not like a pimped up L3-switch they transformed into a wannabe router/firewall. That's why pfSense is better. But honestly, if you need to do OSPF or BGP routing, you probably need to use entreprise grade network equipment AND have real network administrator doing the job for you. Networking is not a pic-nic.

True to form I fully expect ospf to be limiting in almost all key areas and probably won’t support a multi area configuration or ABRs or ASBRs. It will be an atrocious implementation…then 5 years later we get a minor improvement. Maybe
