This film will show the heroes of the US Marines over time as well as what it takes to be a Marine. It opens with US Marine warships (:13). Annually, each ship must prove its readiness for war even in times of peace to a team of Naval experts (:35). A successful demonstration win’s an ‘E’ which stands for battle efficiency (:42). The film is presented by the US Marine Corp (1:04) and begins with a history lesson. The Marines were formed after the American Revolution began (1:18). The very first Marines enlisted in Tun Tavern in Philadelphia (1:27). A painting is shown of the USS Cabot in December of 1775 and this was the first mission of the marines (1:38). Four years later was the Battle of Flamborough Head with John Paul Jones as the Commander (1:49). Another painting follows showing the Marines fighting the British in 1812 (2:20) as well as the Battle of Tripoli (2:24). This battle is still commemorated today in the shape of the Marine’s swords (2:58). In 1889, Private William Anthony saved his captain as the ship went down (3:13). The Pearl Harbor attack is also shown as the USS Arizona was attacked on December 4th, 1941 (3:24). The Marine who dragged a fellow Marine to safety during this battle was awarded a silver star (3:35). Men are seen reporting aboard ship for the first time (4:00). They had received training at the US Marine Corp Sea School (4:29). A montage of physical training (5:36) and duties follow ending with men standing in front of the Eiffel tower (6:01). Aboard the ship, Marines were responsible for urgent messages from other officers (6:39), protecting the flag (7:01), security (7:21) as well as actual warfare as men rush to plug a blown hole in the ship (7:32). Graduation ceremonies follow (7:51). The Marine detachment arrives and must first report to their Commanding Officer (8:23). They are given a guided tour of the ship (9:29) and also meet the detachment gunnery who conducts daily training schedules (9:44). Doctors remain on call at all hours on the ship (10:17). In addition to the mess hall (10:26), the ship is equipped with a soft drink and ice cream fountain bar (10:45). The 5-inch gun mount with the letter ‘E’ mounted on it is depicted (10:57). Once the men had received their weapons (11:13) they are responsible for its care and cleaning while aboard the ship (11:25). The Captain’s Sentry is responsible for the safety of all state room’s in his vicinity (11:37). The Captain also has a Marine Orderly (11:58) who is seen delivering messages (12:04). The Flag Officer shown also has up to five orderlies (12:22). The most important duty is to guard the new weapons (12:33) in a restricted area. The Brow Sentry shown (13:15) is to protect the forward brow of the ship. Members of the ship perform guard duties and learn how to operate larger weapons (14:19). The gun crew is seen loading 50 lb. rounds of steel and they will fire them blind as they cannot see where projections will land (14:28). Over the loud speaker the captain announces the men are to prepare for an annual gunnery exercise (15:22). A congressman boards this ship and is treated to a salute of the Brow Sentry (15:58). They are aboard the USS St. Paul which is accompanied by the missile cruiser USS Chicago (17:05) and the air craft carrier USS Oriskany (17:11). After a parade on the Oriskany (19:42), the annual check for battle readiness begins (20:00). A whistle blows and all men rush to their positions (20:41) and then begin unloading missiles (22:36). After being tested over the next few days this ship is again awarded an ‘E’ which is represented by a hash mark as it is the second year in a row winning (23:57). As the film nears its end, Marines line the edge of the ship and we are reminded again they must be prepared and alert in war times and in peace times (24:23). The credit screen follows and this had been created in the US Naval Photographic Center (24:48).

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in this world. Marines don't have that problem."
