The MOST excruciating episode of UC I have ever watched. I was ready to chuck myself out the window. Thanks for the upload, TM. Really appreciate you doing this for us.
Everyone's complaining about UCL's deliberations but they weren't the ones who spent 5 minutes trying to think of a figure skater when the answer was The Commodores 😂
Although she did not know the answer, it may been a joke, as Conoco was an oil company that just might have controlled a "sparsely-populated oil-rich country south of Cameroon".
I know they're not still in their student days so I will cut some slack in terms of the freshness of their expertise, but do they know to speed up at all? Discussing is one thing, but UCL didn't seem interested in producing an answer on several occasions.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to upload. I've only been watching UC for a few years. This is the 1st time I've seen Paxman disqualify a bonus b/c they took too long. They should really have a timer instead him saying, 'Come on, let's have it.'
If anything he's considerably more lenient on the alumni teams (presumably because they don't get as much practice with the format as the students do). Another factor is that the student teams usually take the hint the FIRST time he says "come on"!
@@attilathepun7596 Yes, i don't know why the producers think we are more interested in these latter-day students than the normal bunch. They just get - John Smith from Norwich, reading French. Why not just have, John Smith, graduated with a degree in French in 1985. That's quite enough info.
@@attilathepun7596 Indeed. All we need is (possibly) what subject the panellist studied, when they graduated, and what they are doing now - no need for anything from dear old Paxo.
Always delighted to see a flag round crop up - an easy four from four. Topics not too bad tonight in all fairness. But I have to agree with others on here, there was a real lack of urgency at times. Almost like both teams completely forgot the required 155 target!
Has to be up there with worst episode so far...? The intro taking 5 minutes doesn't help, but where is the urgency! I did enjoy Follett's mannarisms though
In my humble opinion(!), UC (including the "regular" competition) would be IMMEASURABLY improved if they had a timed limit on deliberations. No answer before the buzzer goes off and you don't get the points. If you watch old episodes of UC in the days of Bamber Gascoigne, it moved at an electric pace compared to today's shows. I don't know any quiz shows where timers aren't part of the equation!
@@freddiethecutestcavapoo9184 ok you got that one, mate. My incredibly witty repartee was wasted. And you are so right about the old episodes, they are lightning fast, it's incredible. I watch them sometimes and I am just boggled. And dear old BG so gentle yet he moved it along without being rude. A hard act to follow, and Paxo didn't really.
@@helenswan705 - LOL!! I do think it has become ridiculously slow. As I said before, what "game show" doesn't have a timer on answering questions? There may be one but I can't think of it! Maybe when they replace Mr. P they will take more control of the process! Watching SOME discussion is OK but there should be a limit (also, not apparently arbitrarily set each time by the MC)!
It is 10:37pm CST on Monday, December 26, 2022 & I will finish this comment in roughly the amount of time it took the teams to give an answer, which is to say...
the contestants don't seem to be aware that time is of the essence as well in this competition; the quicker the answer is given, the more time to raise the score... the teams took too long in answering questions, and they seem to have laboured under the impression that the bonus questions have to be answered only after the description is given... University Challenge could perhaps put a time clock for answers to be given: e.g., 10 seconds...
13:15 The Edward Hopper round was excruciating. Forty seconds to discuss, without irony, how embarrassing it's going to be, before delivering the answer "Wim Wenders", arrived at after only six seconds. Twenty-seven seconds to pass on "Road to Perdition". Nineteen seconds to deliver the answer "Psycho", arrived at after only five seconds. Two minutes and fifteen seconds in total, for a round which could have taken two shakes of a rat's willy. These people must never be allowed on television again.
Seems a consensus of opinion that that was awful. Jeremy Paxman needs to be a far harder task master and instill some discipline ,they just ignored him.
