That reminds me of a video I saw last year around the start of lockdowns. A couple was being interviewed to see how they were coping so far and the interviewer went grocery shopping with the husband. The husband didn't have a regular mask, so he put on a red bandana to enter the store and I remember thinking that he looked more like he was going to rob the place than shop there.

Is it just me or does it feel scripted and rehearsed? It used to be obvious that they were improvising but it now looks like they're reading a teleprompter.

@@madMARTYNmarsh1981 It was always highly scripted. The material Frankie Boyle used to use was similar to the stuff he'd try out during smaller stand-up gigs.

@NomChompsky was it really! I didn't know. At least there was a veneer of originality before though, now it can't even fool this old fart.

It's definitely lost its edge. There doesn't seem to be any meat to the jokes. Any whack. They get a little 'eh hehe' out of me now. Rather than a hand on belly laugh.

It’s always been scripted, insofar as they get the topics way ahead of time so they can prepare content. The more experienced ones can riff on the fly, but the newer comedians to this format tend to be less flexible. I think it’s good that they’re showing a greater roster of comics though. I also think that if you’ve grown up watching comedy, you start to anticipate punchlines naturally, especially the more obvious ones. You can see it sometimes that the more seasoned comics will leave the obvious jokes for the newbies to pick up. And then you can sometimes get a moment when another comedian will laugh before the punchline as they realise what it will be. A lot of comedians today are used to performing scripted sets and not coming up through the old club scene with drunk hecklers and the need to craft a joke a minute, so for comedians who do longer form comedy, like storytelling and anecdotal stuff, I imagine this show is a real challenge and puts them out of their comfort zone. You get some who can provide an interesting angle like Sara Pascoe who often makes feminist jokes so she’s approaching the topic from an alternative perspective, or James Acaster whose comedy is really good at surprise, which is why he’s always so fresh and funny to other comedians, because he’s a Wild card. Then you’ve got your guys like Russell Howard who take the obvious jokes, but that’s still an important role and he gets a lot of fans from it.
