As the guest instructor in the Unregistered Academy course on the Bible, Paul VanderKlay spoke with me and our students about Christian asceticism and what he calls Christ's command to "colonize history." It was far and away the most illuminating and moving conversation I have had on the subject of religion.

I came to the same conclusion that Christianity does much better without political power. One reason why I lean toward Christian anarchism.

25:32 Paul is really good on explaining the political paradigm regarding Jesus installation of the Kingdom of God, through a radical differentiation in how his followers lived their lives, vs the earthly powers of the any age, but particularly how it "conquered" the Roman Empire. If you are new to Paul VanderKlay and find this interesting his RU-vid channel has a ton of great videos exploring this.

The entirety of the Orthodox Way of Life for the laity is to develop daily, weekly, and annual rhythms of asceticism - we look to monastics and Saints as our guides for how to live our daily lives. Daily Prayer Rules (particularly the meditative Jesus Prayer), Fasting (almost half the year), and almsgiving are the hallmarks of how we obtain the Beatific Way of life laid out in the Sermon on the Mount. I do agree with Paul that the reformers placed an emphasis on the individual believer but I disagree that asceticism for the people was not the focus of the early church, particularly Orthodoxy.

I don't think western Christians can really understand what Faith in Christ means. Not yet anyway. My mother's region was conquered by Muslim turks in the mid 1300s. It wasn't liberated in 1912. Her father was born in 1910 as property of the Sultan. All his father had to do for full rights for himself and his family was say Allah U Akbar. He never did. Neither did any of the dozens of generations before him. The concept of personalizing your faith and having a relationship with Christ is the only reason we could hold in the face of oppression for that many centuries when escape was so materially easy. In the west when the oppressor was the papal system and everything related to it I could see his point. But not where I'm from.

22:00 I don't get PVK's often repeated comment about how remarkable it is that 4 gospel writers all wrote such influential work. They all wrote the same story, so isn't this an example of one miracle, not four?

They all have a very unique characteristic compared to the other writings floating around at the time as they focus on the crucified Christ. But these are 4 different "eye witness" accounts targeted to different audiences with apostles (or their followers) relaying what was revealed to them. Although there is remarkable similarity, there are differences in the accounts. For example, the Gospels have differences in the sequence of events. Some of the accounts have slight differences in the stories. Theses differences quite frankly add to their authenticity. For example, if a cop interviews 4 people and gets the exact same account he knows they must have "gotten their stories" straight before being interviewed. It would also make sense, as Jesus was traveling around teaching, some of the parables may not be spoken the same word for word but relay the same message. So I do agree with Paul on this account. It is astounding that these 4 "writers" were able to convey the fullness of how Jesus was revealed in the Gospels through their experience.

43:00 Really love this exchange on doing "good works" to game the system. That's why the real transformation on your Christian journey happens when you aren't focused on "making it to Heaven" but realize you desire to be transformed from the inside in your life today. A radical metanoia happens in response to God's love. A good measure of this state of being is love for your enemies as Jesus lays it out in Matthew. When wronged do you have an immediate response of Father forgive them for they know not what they do? Or do you harbor resentment and anger and only respond with "good works" because you have to do them in order to game the system and "obtain Heaven". Now this is an extremely hard process for many of us, but the goal is to obtain "a peace that this world cannot give" for the sake of being internally transformed out of gratitude for God's love, not gaming the system for an external result.

The purpose of the bible was to destroy mythology. Categorically. Everything on the shelf. Sir James Frazer & Joseph Campbell were right to point out that the bible was exactly like mythology, it IS exactly the same thing. But what they failed to realize is the most obvious thing of all: they changed the ending. All mythology had the same ending over and over, but the Bible's is so different it should have occurred to Frazer & Campbell. They just missed it. The metaphors of mythology all fail, they are untrue. The ones used in the bible cannot be broken, they are all basically the untrue metaphors of spoken word mythology made true by written word religion, which is basically truth based mythology. It's actually easier to see the effect writing had on people through numbers than words, because people recognize immediately how much easier it is to do math on paper than it is in your head. The holes in spoken word mythology would have been insanely apparent once written down and poked about through simple re-readings.

@@nidhishshivashankar4885 By simply saying that all victims of murder in the name of god were INNOCENT. Before the bible, mythology justified all kinds of murder in the name of god. After the Bible, they could not (not if they read it right).

What nonsense. The first Church Fathers that compiled the Bible didn't have this materialist approach to Mythology with the juxtaposition of the fundamentalist approach to the Bible. Your comment wreaks of someone with very little knowledge of either. The myths may very well have been written and added to by men, but the idea that the subjects within the myth weren't real entities is not in Christian orthodoxy. These was fallen angels and the word demon applies to them.
