Our bodies are designed for dynamic stability and it can be difficult for us to have the perfect balance of mobility and stability. Sometimes frequent neck popping or snapping can be a sign that you need more stability in your neck! If you're experiencing this popping or you just generally feel like your neck is unstable, this is a great exercise to try.
Dr. Lin teaches a simple exercise to activate and strengthen the small muscles in your neck to create your very own internal neck brace. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Hi, I was hoping you could answer this question: when you press your tongue against your palate, which of those do you predominantly engage: the neck flexors or the hyoid muscles? Am I correct in assuming that the hyoid muscles do not take part in neck stabilisation? Many thanks in advance and best wishes.

Thanks! Great video. To the point. Wanted your opinion on something. I fell sideways on my right side years ago and since then I have tenderness and instability of neck, headaches and overall body imbalance. Recently they found C4-C5 retrolisthesis on my X-ray. Another youtuber told me retrolisthesis can be caused by cervical instability. Would this exercise help? I tried it and seems to strengthen and stabilize a bit. Just wanted to be sure before I continued regularly. Thank you!

I have a neck slimmer device that works to accomplish the same type of resistance. You set it on your chest and the other end under your chin and push down. The key is to keep your neck from moving, and pivot your head. So you’re just rotating your head down, without moving it forward with your neck. If that makes sense. It helps to get rid of saggy appearance under the chin and makes for a stronger jawline. I got it because I thought my neck was weak, but it has other benefits for the face, too. It’s only $10 so well worth it.

I understand there are deep neck flexors that need to be strengthened and that, when one exercises those, one is supposed to avoid triggering the superficial flexors, like the SCM. When I do this exercise, I can definitely feel the SCMs are triggered. Am I doing it incorrectly?

I gave you a thumbs up out of courtesy and I will try this "exercise" but I really don't think that this is going to make any difference for me. I've had 3 MRIs a cat scan and over 10 blood draws...my neck is so weak I can't look up if I'm down on all fours and the left half of my face is numb and has been for over 8 months now, I can't really swallow food well at all anymore, I've lost over 25 pounds, I'm going into radiology for a barium swallow on the 8th today is the 6th., they are calling this dysphagia but it seems that my words have become slurred now too...any ideas from this PT would be appreciated., Thank's.
