Going to the gym can be pretty intimidating. All of the machines look complicated and scary. But then you see machines like the treadmill and elliptical and think, I can't possibly mess up using those. Well, unfortunately, we're here to tell you today that there is a WRONG WAY to use an elliptical. Ok, it's pretty hard to be completely wrong about it, but there is a way that activates more muscles and gets you the most out of your workout. Take a look at the way Dr. Lin uses an elliptical!

@@loganjackson8667 I highly recommend the elliptical. It's very easy on my joints. I had a knee injury I got on a treadmill. I used to run but cannot now because my knee feels like it wants slide out of place, plus I'm 67 🙂 All I can do is walk on one, I find that so boring but I love the elliptical because I feel I'm getting a good workout without pain. This video was amazing to me. Tomorrow when I go I will do what Dr. Lin suggested 3 xs a week with strength training as well.

I've found that you can vary different postures to focus different muscles. Tiptoe vs heel vs flat, bending the knees or squatting lightly and cycle between those I find gives the best exercise.
@Sammy-mb9bf
@Sammy-mb9bf 2 года назад
Using the arms on the elliptical is not to make the exercise easier. It is there to engage your upper body. If you are using the eliptical machine to warm up before lifting, similar to me, you SHOULD use the handles to engage your entire body in the exercise. It's also better to engage your entire body in general because if you want to just run, run 😂 the treadmill is there for a reason.

Good point
@loganjackson8667
@loganjackson8667 2 года назад
Even better it burns more calories the more muscles u use if you choose to use both . But they make the handles for a reason . If you're trying to focus on working just your legs that is fine too . There's no right way to excercise . It's about just moving and working your heart and lungs and improving your quality of life you don't have to overthink everything

All the beginners out there: Don't take this video too literally, this is only ONE way of doing this. And of course you should use your arms, because this is a machine designed to activate your whole body. Just remember to keep your heels down, and add resistance. No point doing this super fast with little or no resistance.

Thank you sooo much! Just received my elliptical so have to assemble it. So glad I will start off right!!! The personal trainer who demonstrated it had her feet placed right up to the front of the pedal (the rest of their video was extremely well done, very professional) so I did give them a call and gave them a heads up about foot placement and pulling back with the heel so they could also check it out with a physio therapist and correct their video to help their customers get maximum benefit. This is a good video! My two legs are partially paralyzed from some kind of a virus (as far as they can tell) in 2018. I have been using an elliptical every day for the past couple of years as part of my maintenance training. And, I have been primarily putting my weight on the front of my foot. From watching this video, I started actually rolling my toes off the pedal (as you showed in your exaggerated explanation) during some strokes. I think it's a dramatic improvement in my overall workout! Thanks!!!

The elliptical machine can be used to target many muscles. This may be the correct way for the muscles described in the video. Your "incorrect" way simply targets other muscles. It doesn't mean it is incorrect. Hell, you can even use this machine for arms/cardio if you wanted. There is no WRONG way!

Everything can be a workout if it doesn't injure you. And many things can injure you if you do them too many times. Like picking up a 500lb barbell with a back like a cat....the proper number of times the human body should do this is 0. I agree with you fully, there may be a 'best' way to use this machine, but that doesn't make all the other's wrong (necessarily, though they may actually be wrong for their own reasons)

yea i dissapointed at the guy , he didnt do it right and claimed everyone is wrong , he just focus other muscles
@koma7778
@koma7778 5 месяцев назад
No. It is wrong because gluteus are hard to target VS quads and knees. The only reason you would target the knees and quads is if the are your weakness. Generally to keep all balanced u wanna engage gluteus a lot to keep the stress even

Great video but a huge thing u may want to add that can arguably be the most important is to not use your weight to create momentum and riding the flywheel. Try keeping your head at the same height and not have it bounce up and down just using your body like this great physical therapist says. Doing this is harder yes but u arnt there to go easy, going easy is for the couch u are there to WORKout. Doing it this way essentially does the same amount of exercise for your muscles and calories burned in 20 minutes that would otherwise take 30

I just bought my 3rd one and have never thought to get instructions....hey, I'm a guy so what do you expect? When looking in YT for instructions on leveling my new one, I ran into your video. Glad I did since I'm sure I've been lifting my heels since the get-go. I love the exercise I've gotten (I read to take me away from the agony) but I'm sure I have not gotten the workout needed for my hamstrings and glutes. Your recommendation will probably drop me from 45 minutes a day to a lot less as I get used to it but I look forward to seeing the effect on my butt!

I discovered this rooted heel technique by accident. I have a bunion and sometimes it becomes irritated by the flexation at the ball of the foot on the elliptical. So when it started hurting I would just naturally make my foot flatter and shift the pressure to the heel and, voila! My glutes and hamstrings were feeling it within a minute or so and my heart rate increased as well. I know hamstrings and glutes are some of the biggest muscles in the body so if you engage them you're getting a good cardio workout.

I have a question to make. I am a 6'' 2'' man with a weight of 213 pounds and one of the problems that I face with my new eliptical is a knee pain. I think that the problem mainly lies on the fact that my elliptical's stride length is only 18 inches while I guess it should be 20'' or even longer. My second assumption is that I may own a huge lack of fitness that causes me injuries. What is your view about my problem?
@dirtwhisperer658
@dirtwhisperer658 Год назад
I bought an elliptical and have been using it since 2014. It takes a lot more out of you than how it looks. It really is a total body workout. I don't think the stride is causing you problems. You may need to work up to 30 min. or 45 min. or whatever your goal is slowly. You might be trying to do too much and your body is not ready for it so you need take at least a month getting up to 30 minutes. Your knees need to be strong for the elliptical and they will build strength after a few months. Be careful. I gave myself tennis elbow by doing too much elliptical and weight training. I know that's what it was because I got it in both arms. It took multiple trips to the orthopedic clinic to get rid of that and I had to quit working out. Now I do the elliptical every 2nd day not every day so my body has a chance to recover. That routine is working good. BTW I am 5'10 and weigh 175 and I am 59. It's good that you are working out. Good luck!
@Gigi-pd8vj
@Gigi-pd8vj Год назад
@@dirtwhisperer658 thank you very much for your reply!After three months I realized that it is my lack of fitness that has been causing me knee problems. I bought an elliptical since the machine I was using at home was on its last legs... I have the habit of "stepping on my toes" (I don't know the English expression for this, paraphrasing from my language) - stomping your heels when running can cause knee pain/damage from the impact shock, or so I was told. My quads were almost decimated after 10 minutes! This is totally different movement than when using a treadmill. I'll try your technique and see how it goes. Hopefully I'll manage to control my movement while on the elliptical.

Hey man, your method seems to work really well for me. The only problem is that my arms give out because sitting back on the heels makes the handles a little too far forward. It's pretty similar to how you looked doing it. I'm surprised you didn't say anything about arm fatigue. Are you holding on like that for 30 minutes straight? Are there handle extenders or something? Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. I knew I was doing it wrong. Does it matter what I hold? Feels easier when I hold the static handles.

I have been using an elliptical for a few years now. If I don’t raise my heels I tend to feel a pull in the muscles right above my ankle in the back. My Achilles’. Any way to prevent that using your method?

Please I have a question. I am at 150kg and my country doesn't seem to sell ellipticals that support my weight. They do however, sell ones that support 120kg body weight. Is it okay for me to use those ones despite the excess body weight? Please if anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it.

What if the back of the elliptical does not have that lip guard to catch the back of your foot? A lot of the ellipticals at my gym just have a flat pedal, with no guards in the back

i kind of figured out this as the most effective way myself. By pulling ur body behind to create extra pressure on all body parts. But I am sure this will shorten the life of the equipment.

Because I have hip arthritis in my right hip with a touch of dysplasia. I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong but I tried your technique the other day and it seemed to put pressure on my knees. Any corrections I should make?

Why avoid working quads? Is it just that most people have weak glutes and you want to train them? Put another way, why isn't it "shift back to target glutes and shift forward to target quads, but just make sure you are deliberately and correctly choosing the one you need?"
@RehabRevive
@RehabRevive 2 года назад
Great question! Dr. Lin believes that in todays society, people are too quad-dominant and this can lead to further issues down the line. Focusing on the glutes as seen here can help prevent some of these problems!
