In earlier gens a shiny Ditto would transform into the shiny equivalent of whatever it was transforming into. This would have been a legitimate way to view Mew's shiny sprite.
"Oh, no. Oh no... My daughter is missing. No... She Couldn't have gone to the BURNED TOWER. I told her not to go near it... People seem to disappear there... Oh, what should I do...?" Most likely foreshadowing the movie with Entei & the Girl.
unused content in old games are always a treasure, it triggers some kind of melancholic and curiosity on me, like, I wanna know why they left the things unused, I want to know the true behind.
Late comment here, but someone actually took a beta version of Gold and Silver and made a full ROM hack on the concept! It's called Reforged Gold and Silver. It's really interesting!
12:04 - What's even creepier about this unused text string is that if you walk out of bounds with a walk through walls code at the start if a game in your house to the right, Save your game in the out of bounds area, you will end up in "Glitch City". Glitchy City has an interesting NPC which is a white colored sprite of a female trainer and looks kinda like a ghost. What is even more interesting that when she sees you, the Burned Tower music will start to play, so that unused text string and that combined = mystery solved. And no, it's not a creepypasta made up bullshit. Just look up a video called "The Ghost Of Glitch City".
Actually it doesn't seems to be leftover content or so, it just seems to be a series of glitches glitching together to create this situation. Pokemon Crystal was created using Assembly and when you mess up with numbers and variables everything can turn around, so yeah, this might be just a coincidance of a series of random glitches.
You know, I kinda want Gamefreak to introduce more punctuation variants of Unown just so people can write entire essays just with Pokemon. I know they'd be useless, but still
You know, I love hearing about unused content in games, especially ones I used to play as a kid, like these early Pokemon games..I don't know why, but it's really, really fun.
This is just a guess, but I think they may have only deleted things when it was absolutely necessary. Maybe due to how it was programmed, getting rid of one thing would have messed up something else?
I mean, that makes sense to some degree, but I would've figured that sort of thing would've been worked out before programming began. It's just odd to me.
Time constraints were likely responsible for some leftover content. Gold and Silver had a long development cycle and it would not surprise me that they would cut back on some areas to get the games out quicker. It is also possible that memory data was removed as necessary to make space for new content and that some assets took up less space than others. For example, some of the assets used in the earliest builds of Gold and Silver cannot be found in the memory of the final products. However, we know that such prototype assets exist due to screenshots published in magazines as well as an early demo of the games.
I found this weird glitch in Pokémon Ruby. The glitch is that there is this lady that tries to battle you beside a wall you can jump off of. Come up to her from the opposite side of the ledge (The side that you can jump off of) when she looks at it, which will cause her to come up to you, but she just goes through the ledge as if it was a regular tile.
Nicolas Frasson I FOUND THIS WEIRD GLITCH IN POKEMON SUN! GAMEFREAK HATES IT! GET OVER MILLIONS OF IN-GAME MONEY AND LEGENDARIES ANYWHERE YOU ARE! CALL NOW AT 888-(SCAM) BEFORE GAMEFREAK PATCHES THIS INCREDIBLE GLITCH! JUST $20!
Although funnily enough, there is a glitch that allows for that and more Arbitrary Code Execution. You can even make the game play Pong if you so desire. Broken as fuck glitch
Doesn't one of the older pokemon movies involve some young girl disappearing and ending up with Entei? I may be remembering that wrong, but if I'm right, perhaps something like that was supposed to happen with the unused burned tower text, and they were going to make that movie reference in the games.
It's actually not all that impossible, since the anime showed things that were still only planned and has often referenced things that later occurred in movies as well. First big example is the pilot episode where Ash sees Ho-oh and it aired April 1st, 1997 in Japan, yet Gold and Silver weren't released until over 2 years later in 1999. Then all the references to Mew and Mewtwo's creation in the first game tied into the first big movie with snippets dotted throughout the anime. With how closely the anime/movie company were tied in with the actual game devs, it's not a far stretch to say that they could have planned this event similar to the GS ball where the anime and Crystal version had it and although they scrapped the concept within the actual game, it's still possible that it went on to create the 3rd movie. It's also quite possible they might have considered doing an event that could only be unlocked with something from the movies premier but then scrapped it later from not really knowing a good way to utilize it, perhaps unlocking an NPC in town who would talk about his daughter vanishing and it leading into this big Entei/Unown chase through the Ruins of Alph and Ecruteak. TCG cards were one thing, but a whole in-game event? That was new territory for them back then, so I can see why it could have gotten scrapped extremely early in the development. Nowadays, it's easy with how they've worked the whole Mystery Gift system and can add such things via codes you could get with a ticket or an in-house Mystery Gift kiosk to get the item needed for the event. Back then, they hadn't even done the GS ball thing and weren't even sure how to distribute that properly. The devs were full of more ideas than they knew what to do with, so that was probably another one they tried but then spent a few more generations polishing before trying to do it again with Diamond and Pearl's (and every gen since) improved Mystery Gift system.
honestly I don't even remember there being a movie for the johto region at all but thay's because i dont watch pokemon movies... ANYWAY, as i stated in another comment, I remember hearing that line in soulsilver.. i wonder if that's an actual thing or if im remembering it wrong?
NegaTheImpmon9508 you don't remember Charizard appearing and saving ash flying around with ash riding it and fighting entei? That's a pretty big moment in the movie
Great video! You did a really good job finding out and explaining this stuff! You also have a unique and interesting way of annunciating - everyone does and you do it in a good, distinctive way from other people making the same kinds of videos. And despite knowing a ridiculous amount of pointless pokemon trivia, i actually didn't know some of this stuff! Kudos to you! Keep up the great work man! ^_^
If you talk to the Rocket Leader (the guy with a Murkrow standing next to him) by bypassing the tile event trigger, you get that 'Object Event' text. Just thought I'd throw that in.
On the one hand, only the Japanese games have Shiny Mew. On the other hand, as far as I know, only North Americans had Shiny Jirachi until 2014, a fact that seemed to escape Game Freak because you couldn't send them through Pokemon Bank until that event.
I've also been told that the Jirachi from the Colosseum bonus disc was not shiny locked. But I think you could only send out one per cartridge, so it would have been difficult to continuously try for a shiny. I've also heard that people who DID get one this way cloned the heck out of them with glitches and passed them around once the wi-fi options were available in gen 4. They also couldn't go through Poke-bank for the same reason from what I hear.
I've been toying with the idea that perhaps there would be a way around it similar to the Pokemon Ranger Manaphy, but I haven't seen any way around it like that. Unless the cart check was so flimsy that it only checked the save and not the actual cart. Plus, there seems to be support for FRLG for the Bonus Disc that isn't used for some reason. Not possible to activate on a legit copy, though.
Because as you're very shy to talk to the girks, God didn't see necessary to add text to the girl you don't have the guts to talk to, however, if you talk her anyways the placeholder text appears.
@J-dayday So once there are 256 comments it would reset, so the comment is technically correct. Just worded a little weirdly, but I think they still meant to say integer overflow occurs when the comment number hits 256.
Wasn't it common for Pokemon games to slip in Japanese myths into their lore though? Either those disappearing people were spirited away to the netherworld, or the Legendary Trio really did eat them up once in a while..
So the Safari Zone was cut, likely because of a shortage of space on the cartridge.....and they kept these early versions of towns that were never used....WHY?!?
Time is the most likely culprit. While its possible deleting the leftover bits wouldn't have made enough room for what they wanted to add, they had only two weeks left to create a compression algorithm to cram it all in. Luckily Iwata was there to save the day.
Imagine playing a game of Jenga; you remove pieces and place them on top to reach greater heights. Imagine the pieces are code and the height is what you want the game to be. It becomes very tricky to remove a piece of code because another piece may be depending on it. Where this metaphor disconnects is that in Jenga you can get a tactile response out of the pieces; you can tell by touch what will come out and what won't. You don't have that luxury with code. Removing a piece could totally break the game or be totally fine, but it's not as simple as booting up and checking in every case. You could remove a piece and cause a nasty bug with specific, but easily reproducible, steps that might not be found until an innocent player trips over it. So rather than risk removing a piece that could cause the whole thing to crash they just add a whole 'nother Jenga set and build on top of what was built. I don't know how to code myself, but this is my general understanding of why so much cut content is left in games even when it seems like a detriment to keep it.
That Mega Collection music. Seeing the maps together the way you presented them actually gave me a chance to really appreciate the aesthetic choices they made in the final game. New Bark Town, for example, is more wooded and less man-made just by removing those fences. The aesthetics of the original GSC are bae, and it's evident why, knowing now that they put a lot of thought into it.
I didn't realize this was an old video until you said "annotation" cause it just showed up in my feed. Now I'm sitting here wondering how I'd never seen it before cause I've easily been watching you for that long.
Got some nice ass content for a small RU-vidr. Not to be cliche, but a good topic to cover while on the main idea of early generation Pokemon games would be glitches. I've got some nice ideas for you. 1. Glitch Pokemon (Like more mysterious ones, like "L l m 4" and "PkMnaPkMnfPkMnk" 2. Glitch items (like "8F", "B1F" and the surfboard item.) 3. Glitch Moves (Any form of Super Glitch, really.) 4. If you wanna get a slight bit more complicated, Arbitrary code execution. 5. More known glitches such as the ZZAZZ Glitch and the effects of TMTrainer. A snazzy little Game Faqs link will be below to give you a plethora of info on 1st gen glitching. (I didn't make it. Credit to KeyBlade999 for creating it.) Have a blast and I'll be waiting for your next video. Can't wait, man. www.gamefaqs.com/gameboy/367023-pokemon-red-version/faqs/59445
Thanks^ I've considered a video on glitching Pokemon, but I don't think there's too much I can really say that hasn't already been said. When it comes to glitch videos, Pokemon is one of the most talked about series.
Pikasprey Yellow Hey, no problem. 100% understandable. I just felt that if I could you were to ever begin covering glitches and such, I could help out. If you ever decide to look at glitches, I know for a fact that the link in my comment would be more than enough for a nice video or two. One suggestion I have is that you continue with your Unused Content series and move along to gen 3. It'd be pretty interesting.
I'm actually in the editing phase of the next video right now. It's the one mentioned at the end of this one, that's going to about Sonic fan games. After that, I'll probably start on another Unused Content episode. I'd prefer though, not become known for just one type of thing, so I'm currently gonna be trying out some things.
I just had a creepy thought about the whole “missing people” thing at the Burned Tower: what if the Legendary Dogs were once human? What an eerie thought...
Though there isn't much data on this, there was the unused Skateboard that was scrapped early in developement. BUT ALSO, while there hasn't been anything found ingame, an unused movement data set can be found that doesn't match walking or biking, which may be related to the skateboard (I don't have the link for the saddly) Also, the Burned Tower side quest was noted to be unused but later reused as a sidequest in R/S/E Love your videos btw! :)
Yeah, there's very little besides a mention in some article from a dev. Also, I laughed a little as I did a video on that "secret house" years ago. Got the same responses :P
The outro rambling of Pikasprey reminds me of my early days of streaming where I would just ramble on and on about what people should expect next time. xD
It's kinda neat to see those early designs for towns. Because some of em (like New Bark Town) looks like a mix between the final version and the old Spaceworld demo version. With there being some kind of path heading north that's blocked off, a Pokemon Center, and the Lab being in the bottom right. All of which exist in the Spaceworld demo. But it's still different than the demo. In the demo, the water on the right wasn't there, it was just a path blocked by a large rock. And the "path" leading north wasn't just blocked by a couple trees, but by an entire mountain. There's also a strip of water at the bottom of New Bark in the Spaceworld demo. Goldenrod's left exist is also in the Spaceworld demo, though it just ends at a bunch of trees and doesn't actually go anywhere. Even on the town map, there's nothing directly to the left of Goldenrod in the demo. On the map, it goes up (through the north gate) THEN to the left. Ecruteak is a lot different than the old demo, but there's still a couple similarities. The bottom right two buildings are still there, though they're different buildings. The little tower in the bottom left has a smaller building in it's place. There's a house where the water is on the far right. Also, fun fact. Giovanni was supposed to be at the top of the Radio Tower in the demo.
I remember long ago when playing my Gold version I was able to catch a "V" shiny unown and I thought it was as rare as any other shiny Mon but never imagined it was in fact even harder to find :0
Very interesting video. I love digging for unused content, especially for gen 2 since theres so much of it. Maybe you shouldve mentioned that scrapped Entei text that supposedly would have triggered a battle. It's interesting since it seems the Kanto trio were roaming since they are programmed to flee from your when you encounter them, while the Johto trio could have been stationary legendary early in the game, but later the kanto trio was scrapped and the johto trio made into roaming instead.
people disappear...well we know that the legendary beasts were chased off by humans...I would assume they would attack people who don't pose a threat and get too close.
*crashkirby111* by that logic, maybe that's why the legendary beasts run away when you encounter them. You'd look like an ordinary kid to the beasts and they'd try to attack you, but when you toss out your pokemon, you won't seem weak
I'd like to see a Pokemon GSC Rom Hack that uses all the unused maps and other content in the games, similar to how there's a Sonic Rom Hack that uses all the unused levels and level elements. There could also be sections in Kanto that use unused Gen 1 content.
Manaphy was an attempt to block shinies, but they left out one loophole that allowed for it to be shiny. And for some reason they blocked shiny WISHMKR Jirachi until a more recent shiny Jirachi event.
The gen 2 remakes are so good, I still don't know why they didn't add more to the radio tower or Pokemon tower replacement. Regardless though hg ss are still easily the best pokemon remakes. Great video btw :D
I love moments where the game basically breaks. It always makes me think of that old Jackie Chan meme with the idea that the computer is basically going "WHAT?!?!"
Player sees house and cave entrance in the bottom left corner. Player got confused. 🐥🐥🐥🔄 ----------- | It hurt itself in | | its confusion! | -----------
I know this might be really old, but regarding the little girl going in to the burned tower: The hardest thing to do is to get people to do anything at all. When there is no direct quest log to refer to, its likely that quest would have been used to further direct the player towards the Burned Tower. With a target audience being so young it's likely they'd all remember that objective quite well and always would have known where to go next, if implemented.
Nice to know there's other object events, the only one I ever encountered by chance (and without glitches) was in Crystal Speedchoice in Sprout Tower. With a spinner setting on (Purge is easiest to pull this off with), it's possible to be seen by the sage blocking the right-side path up to the Silver/HM05 cutscene on the same tile that triggers the cutscene under vanilla conditions. The battle will take priority over the cutscene, but when it's over, you can continue up as normal and the cutscene won't happen - you can battle Sage Li with Silver there and talking to Silver just produces an object event.
I know this was 4 years ago and all, but a bit of a damper on the Unown shiny situation is that IVs are referred to as DVs in Gens 1 and 2, so the coincidence is unfortunately lost in the introduction of both shinies and Unown :( Also while your theory of the rival at Burned Tower could be correct, I would guess the behavior you produced was due to the rival being programmed to stop and approach you when you enter a close enough distance to him while being on his X coordinate tile plane, and the crash is due to him not knowing where to go since you came from an unexpected location. The footage you showed could just be a coincidence of this looking like a traditional trainer encounter, but of course it could be either/or.
My best guess for the Burned Tower dissappearing people idea is tied to Unown and perhaps inspired the story of the Pokemon 3 The Movie, being Unown and Entei in some creepy tower.
Interesting that predev Goldenrod had a port, perhaps the devs planned to add an island area to travel to, but it might have been scrapped due to the cartridge not having enough room.
Interesting content. I played 1st and 2nd gen when I was like 7 or 8 years old and the game mechanics and all the little secrets of the game up until today with your videos never ceased to amaze me. At one point I thought I found a glitch to increase my Pokemons' HP infinitely by fighting the E4 with one and then transferring it onto the PC, while in reality I was just doing EV training and for some reason storing Pokemon in the PC updated their stats... Also back then some acquaintances managed to teach their Charizard hydro pump etc., I knew it was fake/game manipulation, but I was sooo interested in how it worked. Does the soothing music used in the last part of the video have a particular name?
10:52 Fun Fact I did this and spoke to the other trainer and a battle started and skipped. It started normally because it's impossible to reach him at that point, but not impossible later when you battle him. Oh yeah if anyone was wondering it skipped because I had no Pokémon. It does that.
Minor error: You said no starting town has a Pokemon Center... Black2 and White2 DO have a Pokemon Center (and a gym!) in the first town. Probably brought up before and I probably sound like a broken record with this. Other than that, I love this video!
