Updating the firmware of your Behringer RD-8

I found when I came to update the Behringer RD-8 on my MAC that the process wasn't straight forward. Specifically a major part of the process has been omitted from the documentation at the point I performed the upgrade.
Here is how I updated the my RD-8 on my MAC.
This video replaces the previous video that had an issue.

The Windows software says that can't communicate with RD-8 driver. I run on Win10 and it installs automatically. I can't stand this kind of message. Now I don't know how to proceed.

Hi, thanks for the heads up! I just purchased the RD8 yet still have time to cancel it. I would like to know your honest opinion for this drum machine, I am doing some RU-vid research on this RD8 to figure out if it’s a possible good purchase or not. I got some issues with behringer firmware and the thin manuals that comes for their devices and also the poor customer support I never got a straight answer for any of the issues so I had to figure out myself sometime with luck I was able to solve those issues sometime I wasn’t so forced to return devices. Thx!

Have you subscribed? :-) Firstly thanks for the feedback. Glad to have helped. It is difficult to understand the stance the manufacturers take regarding documentation. I know if you read the manuals supplied with some of the legacy synthesisers , they were incredibly detailed. But ultimately the way that they were written made then drivel and incomprehensible. Is the current thinking that when you issue a new piece of equipment you let the RU-vidrs workout how it works and then publish this to the world? I know that if a manufacturer approached me I’d have great fun. But the way I would approach it would be the way I deploy software at work. Run though a use case as opposed to making setting changes. e.g. creating and saving a combination, editing and saving a tone, creating a new pattern and how to trigger it. Jon

Hi, thanks for the awesome tutorials. I updated my rd8 using the synthtribe app. It updated directly to version 2.0.6. Is that normal? Or did i miss steps?

Hi @Reardon Dearborn You do not need to transition through previous versions of the firmware. You just load the latest version of the firmware unless many users in the user groups complain about 'bricking' units or it being very buggy. Jon

What happens to my saved patterns when I update the machine? Will they still be there after the update?

Hi @ Sven F As long as the process doesn't involve you performing a factory reset your patterns should be retained. Although personally what I would do is backup your patterns before the upgrade. Upgrade. Performa a factory reset to ensure all the new features are loaded. Then restore the patterns back to the instrument. Hope that this helps. Jon

What improvements does the firmware offer ? What's justification ?

Hi Have you subscribed? :-) As far as I can tell most of the fixes were related to the way the unit deals with CC messages, specifically start and stop messages and how the clock on the unit works. There is a firmware upgrade due from Behringer. I suspect this will land about the same thing the RD-9 lands as it uses the same core code. Jon

my rd8 mk2 doesnt have no small button in that tiny hole. how do i update?

Hi @Mr. Shneebly We know that there was a bit of a redesign between the RD-8 Mk1 and RD-8 Mk2 following issues that were experiences with the development of the RD-9. In fact when I checked the RD-9 the little hole does not exist. The process has changed and there will be a video on the channel shortly about updating the RD-9 and I suspect the RD-8 Mk2 will follow the same process. Unfortunately I do not have an RD-8 Mk2 to test this theory. Jon

After you update to 1.3.5 you have to download the rd-8 synthtribe software to update to the latest firmware.

you forgot one step the install of the driver which is done first the same way

I am assuming you mean the driver down load for a Windows PC that for some reason you do not have to do on the MAC. So to the wider community if you try this on a Windows PC you need to download an additional component before running the firmware update program that performs the connection to the unit via USB. Jon
