This is one of multiple videos in my Upland Dog Training Series. This Episode focuses on training your bird dog to follow a Scent Trail. This can be a great way to begin teaching your dog to use his nose to find birds. It is also a great way to build on a dogs natural tracking and retrieving ability.

Welcoming a german shorthaired pointer to the family in a few months. We had three when I was younger, but for the past 10 years we've had a gordon setter. I'm very excited to have this dogbreed again.Really helpful and awesome video, thank you.

First time ever watching you and I gotta say you do a GREAT job! There’s one thing that irritates me most and that’s when guys or gals don’t give the dog the proper praise - Excitement in the voice and genuine joy instead of some boring quiet “good boy.” Love this and love what you do!

Thanks for the info. Wanting to take up pheasant hunting. Haven't been out since I was a kid. Got a 10wk old black lab pup and I want to train him so he can grow and learn alongside me. Helpful info, and very much appreciated.

I used the same strategy to encourage steadiness from my lab. That mixed with more experience on the real thing has lead to pretty good sit to flush and shot..

Awsome watching your dog work😊. Did you still use live birds as well as the training dummy to help scent tracking, pointing and retrieving? Just asking because there are definitely groups of hunters ( even hunters living in cities)that want to train their dogs to their great potential but do not have access to live penn raised birds/pigeons.

Got a question. When working with multiple dogs, what is the best way to train for flanking left and right? I know this is for birds, but I use different videos and adjust for game desired. I am wanting to train to hut rabbits and then birds. Thank you

I'm about to get a German shorthair/ lab mix, I think it might have a little blue heeler as well but do you think I'll still be able to train it to hunt pheasant?
@joseywales2255
@joseywales2255 7 лет назад
if the dog has the instincts to hunt then yes. you could also work with it to increase its prey drive. GSP and labs usually have great prey drives for pheasant and upland. other breeds have no interest because its just not in their blood.

if i want my dog to hunt different species of birds, do i need to train him with multiple bird scent and dummys? also if i want to hunt more than just birds like fox or something, then what should i do? i would want him to be able to track birds and retrieve them for me and maybe bark them up in a tree so that i can shoot them in the tree. i was also thinking about a german pointer.
@leevi2138

and also duck and maybe rabbit
@WRYMEDIA
@WRYMEDIA 6 лет назад
With the bird scents. I try to use the scents I will be hunting. But it is not necessary. Once the get going on scents, they tend to know it is still a bird. As far as the fox training. I am not sure, I have not trained a dog to tree an animal.

I have a 2.5 year old gsp. Never hunted before but he for sure has the instincts like I have never seen. Gonna start working with him on this. He hates fire works so I think he will be gun shy but I need his hunting nose to be on which will hopefully make him not worry about the gun sound. Any tips for starting with a dog that hasn’t had any training for almost 3 years.
@WRYMEDIA
@WRYMEDIA 6 лет назад
Be really careful shooting a gun around him if he is scared of fireworks. Make sure you have a long leash on him in case he takes off. Also, feed him his favorite treats as the gun shoots, so that he is focused on that. As far as training, it is a complex answer. Start him on this video suggestions, introduce him to live birds in a cage (can be bought at Bass Pro)
@TopBOCWWarzonePlays

WRY Outdoor Media ok I bought a pheasant wing today to give him to start to get used to the scent. I also got the dummy and scent stick as you suggested. I think he needs to get used to the scents. He loves to point at birds. Hell when we go to petsmart he goes right to the bird cage and points and stares. Sadly we don’t have a bass pro anywhere close to us. Best thing is fleet farm or gander mountain which is going to close. Any other suggestions? As to the gun I have been reading blank 22s to start out. Gonna see if playing ball or following a live scent might help him realize the gun sound is ok. I plan on having a very long lead rope with him so he can’t run. Sadly I have an uncle whom is a big hunter but doesn’t seem to be willing to help me. I wish I had the urge to hunt him when he was younger not now.

Man, was really hoping this stuff would come naturally from hunting breeds. I had a pure breed lab growing up and she would point and try to retrieve skeet that weren't shot. Never trained and never hunted. Was all instinct.

Between 8-9 minutes you explained the negative reinforcement when correcting him on a hold. Can you explain that more in detail?
@WRYMEDIA
@WRYMEDIA 5 лет назад
Basically when he first picks up scent. I stand on the leash and if he moves. The jerk on his collar is a negative reinforcement
@WRYMEDIA
@WRYMEDIA 5 лет назад
In reference to the lead, as apposed to the beep (collar). I say use the lead because it simply stops him and makes him remember (hold point). The beep from the collar is a different ttpe of negative reinforcement I have trained into him. It is more a NO then a stop.

BS on the scent, not the real deal. Dog tracks the birds breath, not a trail of gut emulsion. Proof? Walk a chucker slow and low, on the breath of the bird will be left behind. You're young, you have time to getter better.
