“Urban Below” is an award-winning architectural short film that explores and speculates how the space below the bridge might become in the future. Initial idea of this short animation film originated from a previous research done through a video essay that investigated the urban slum areas of the Philippines where the space beneath the bridge is utilised as a shelter. Using the same idea, the film depicts the informal architecture below the bridge and dives into various perspectives and uses of the space and how it has been transformed and adapted as a liveable and buildable space.
The overall atmospheric direction is inspired by films such as Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg, Blade Runner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve, Total Recall by Len Wiseman, Ghost in the Shell by Rupert Sanders and Star Wars Saga. Conceptual projects such as Parasite City of the Italian Highway and The Bay Line by Rael San Fratello and Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy radically influenced the speculative architecture illustrated in the film.
