MLB teams can only stop their players from participating in the WBC if they meet certain injury conditions
@Qardo
@Qardo Год назад
Well, if you ran the league. Would you allow your top players go out to compete, get hurt, and likely come back worse? It would hurt viewership. And really, it is not the MLB's fault the International League decides to hold their competition during the season. Plus, Japanese baseball teams are not like MLB teams. Japanese teams are owned by literal corporations. The team is slapped with the corporate name and logo. And it isn't uncommon for a team to end up with a corporate name change in the middle of the season. And those who manage the team are not always the best fit. A lot of the time, it is seen as a bonus, and for whoever is put into the management role to flaunt around to impress others (manly women). Also, to party and have a good time. Never seriously managing the team. So this is why Japanese teams can send players to go play on the international stage. It is because they don't play in a very well centralized league. At best, Japanese Baseball is like the Profesional Beer League. And I know that is a bit of an insult. As I know, Japanese baseball players are insanely good. And do get paid pretty fairly, these days, to play. Just compared to an MLB player. They make pocket change. And I call it a "Beer League" because those put into management roles do not take it seriously or really do not care. It is an image thing. And it is on couching staff to do basically everything. I think a big part of the WBC’s problem is that it doesn’t work like the World Cup. During the WC, the entire soccer world comes to a total stop, there isn’t any other high level soccer on anywhere except for the WC. The event is also hosted by a single country (or sometimes a couple of neighboring countries). This means that fans can basically spend the whole month hopping from stadium to stadium watching as many games as they can, but it also adds a certain intangible feeling that makes each tournament special. Everyone in the soccer world remembers Italia ‘90 or South Africa 2010 or the infamous Qatar 2022. If the WBC wants to really be the World Cup of baseball (which I think it should), it needs to actually work like a World Cup.

Sports are only ever interesting and meaningful on some kind of an ethnic basis. As MLB tries to become as foreign as possible to me as an American, I will inevitably become less and less interested in it, because I simply don't care that much about foreign players on a team that's supposed to be local to me in some way that I can understand. Sports is a metaphor for war, so celebrating the MLB being filled with foreign players is just like rooting for the wrong country. They're always moaning also about how MLB hasn't been taken over by blacks as the NBA and NFL have. Well, blacks as a whole clearly aren't the best at baseball. Investing in the inner city doesn't seem to pay off that much. They would clearly get better returns by investing in England, Germany, Netherlands, Australia. Or even American suburbs, how about that? Those are untapped economic markets, and those peoples are historically the best baseball players. Even if they were the 4th best I'd rather watch them.

They make foreign players dress up in old timey clothes and play in a corn field. Then they ban Bauer for two years because he was falsely accused of rape by some piece of crap prostitute because he supports Trump on social media or something. Or because he says obviously true things about the game and its management, and reaches out to fans better than MLB ever has or will. Bauer is the most important player of this generation, and these cretins banned him for two years.

A big part of the decline of US baseball is the select/travel system in place at the youth level. It’s become rife with politics and also requires a pretty significant money investment as well. I am from Venezuela and I can say there are a lot of differences. I live in Kentucky and have for the past 10 years or so. I am not sure how it is in other states like Texas, Florida, and Arizona. In Venezuela, you get more focus on learning techniques and developing players. It is more about learning how to play than playing itself. When I played in college here you could tell the contrast. It was just scrimmaging and a little bit of conditioning. The same seems to be the case for high schools here from one kid I have helped coach. Seems like if you want to get actually coached to improve as a player you have to pay extra for that. Also in the USA athletic superiority is rewarded while in countries like Venezuela that is also rewarded but so is developing your skills. That is how guys like Altuve exist. When I was coming up it was not unusual to be coached by a former professional player or someone who went to the academies and they would bring that knowledge with them. Also, Latin American players don't care about not getting paid millions at first. When you get drafted down there you become a hero in your community. Also, the conversion rate can allow you to buy a house with a few thousand dollars, the minimum wage in Venezuela is a few dollars a month. Whereas if you are an American drafted here you have a higher cost of living and 15,000 bucks won't get you anywhere, that is not even minimum wage here.

I am Dominican, and I can assure you, every country has a lot of bs going on 24/7. The difference is, except for a few big cities that are considered “baseball capitals” like NY, Boston and LA, Americans have largely abandoned baseball. Under every baseball post all you will see if a bunch of American trolls complaining about how “boring” it is. Americans have become so addicted to instant satisfaction and constant non stop stimulation. Baseball is more tense and exciting than football and basketball in my opinion, but you have to actually pay attention, which is hard for Americans of millennial ages and under. In Dominican Republic, it’s practically a religion and part of our culture. Basketball is becoming popular as well but baseball is in our blood. I don't know a dam thing about the World Baseball League or it's history. However, I do remember running on the field after Chris Chambliss 1976 homerun vs the Royals. I still have bruises from being trampled. I hugged Craig Nettles and wouldn't let him go. The greatest night of my life!!

Baseball is the number one sport in all of these countries (besides the Netherlands) baseball was a tradition in the United States, and then football took over, because baseball lost popularity in the states, the MLB needed to go international to keep popular, and they’ve struck gold

Best you check on that, it is not #1 in several nations represented at this WBC.

Because it's too expensive to play organized sports in America. In all other countries every kid gets a chance to play just to see if their any good and if they are they are sponsored by the organization. In America if you can't afford to join an organization you can't play

The thing to remember about Japan is that they have been amazing at baseball for decades. It is just absurdly difficult for Japanese players to transition to the MLB in their prime. Americans are typically naval gazers, so they think that the NPG must be a notable step down from the MLB, but that is nonsense. The majority of the players in the NPG are MLB caliber.

I jus commented on how I vaguely remember being at the 96 Olympics in Atlanta and seeing Japan just demolish USA like 20 to 2 or something with the best players to ever play in American History
@E_Bailey

@@Megatron_James_Brady8121 Baseball at the Olympics in 1996 was amateurs-only. The US got beat 8-10 by Cuba in the Groups, beat Japan 15-5 in Groups, then lost 11 to 2 to Japan in the semi-finals. Not at all "best players in American history".

Wow, never heard of this tournament. Baseball just isn't as popular as it used to be. I've offered to pay for tickets for friends/family to go to games, and it's always the same reaction, "You actually like baseball? I'll go to another game, but no thanks with baseball."

It's because in the U.S, baseball has become too expensive. I am 31 years old now. When I was in high school and younger, I played on select teams where we traveled and played tournaments pretty much every weekend and played 2-3 games during the week as well. So that's almost 10 games a week. Having said that, a select team costs thousands and thousands of dollars. Now at 31, I helped coach a teach and realized that it's even more expensive than when I grew up. Batting practice for one hour costs over $100. One on one fielding costs about the same. It's rediculous and I thought I was paying alot back then.

@flamingfrancis
@flamingfrancis Год назад
You will find that there were more qualification games from nations that are not represented at the WBC than there are for any Cricket WC. Cricket's popularity is mostly attributable to the presence of India (1.3 + billion) and Pakistan (230 million). CWC has maybe five competitive nations but look at the outcome of games in this WBC.
@danielsalas3394
@danielsalas3394 Год назад
@@flamingfrancis that's true, but what I mean is that in cricket, playing for your country is generally the most important aspect of becoming pro, in baseball it hasn't always been like that but it seems like going in that direction

The Japanese are the best in baseball no way around it. It's just the facts. Their pitching is amazing. And probably have the goat in ohtani. Then it's Jeremy Pena then Mike trout. The best player In all of baseball is not American. Nor the best pitcher it's between alcantara or julio. Usa invented this game but really their not the best. They always play home with all the advantages it's not fair for the visitors. And still they lose. Mexico beat them twice in their own house in a baseball classic. And in 1 they did have their best alex rodriguez,Derek Jeter etc... So that's just and excuse that they dont send their best in why they don't win. Ultimately the Japanese would of won anyway again their pitching is simply superior. It's just the facts like I said.
