Here we go. My disagreements. Shakes are not ‘needed’ per say but there is also no reason to cut them out. 1. As you age your body becomes less sensitive to amino acids so it takes more amino acids to get the same effect, 2. If you are a bodybuilder or athlete, it would make sense for protein synthesis and recovery. 3. Who uses protein for fuel? 4. Anyrhing excess can turn into fat. Protein, carbs and fats. The goal is overall calorie intake. 5. Whey protein increases glutathione,reduce oxidative stress in humans and anaimal studies. Add in exercise and your golden 6. protein is not an empty calorie. Protein shakes have Essential Amino Acids which the human body can not make. If you are a vegan or eating low protein diet, you may be neglecting it.

I am a 67 year old power lifter and fitness trainer. I exercise 4 times a week and I don't use whey protein from factories, 'because I don't eat refine sugar. I eat natural and fresh protein from eggs, fish, chicken and nuts and more. I do eat sugar from fruits, nature honey, stevia , dates and dark chocolate with stevia. I'm strong for my age and I'm healthy.

There's a ton of 100% grass fed whey protein powders derived from American dairy cattle that use stevia or fruit monk extract as their sweetener. There are no refined sugars in them or any type of natural flavors or gums so not sure why you're categorizing all protein powders as if they're all created equally with the same ingredients. With that said, you could be enjoying the benefits of whey, with zero refined sugars. And apparently, according to your statement, you are already taking stevia anyway.

Who eats pure protein powder by itself. I use protein powder after weight lifting because after working out your muscle cellls are primed to receive the protein and therefore it doesn’t just float around storing fat. I also pair the protein with a good carb source and the carbs are also driven into muscle tissue. I agree about excess protein and so .8 to 1 gram per pound of body weight is adequate

Are you speaking to middle aged women who don’t lift? And if not, what’s the pathogenic component in whey protein powder? Whey isolate? Hydrolysate? Is it the lactalbumins? Lactose? Other sugars? Do you even lift? Do you use “macros”? What’s going on here??? I just want to understand your argument better, ma’am.

That's interesting food for thought. I never considered protein powders as empty calories. In my case, I eat a largely, but not 100 percent exclusive, vegetarian diet. Looking at the protein recommendations from the Harvard article I'd be woefully under my daily protein recommendations without supplementing. In fact, I probably still am even though I’ve incorporated a combination of both organic hemp and pumpkin proteins to supplement my diet as they are not as protein rich as animal sources. I don't eat soy either. I may be one of those people without a better alternative than supplementing.

Protein is not "empty" calories. If you do not eat adequate protein in your diet, a protein supplement can help maintain your health and prevent, or slow, muscle wasting.

I don't think that a single scoop of protein powder every other day, mixed with normal and complete nutrition, can be harmful... As long as the total protein intake is not excessive. A 75 kg man who trains three times a week is probably not damaged by 90-100 g of protein a day (if the kidney works well).

This is my case I took protein powder for 2 weeks and it ended up causing me extreme anxiety, stress, I could not sleep for 10 days and on top of that tinitus! It was a nightmare! For sure this could be rare but I have read many people having anxiety because of protein powders…

There is no comparison between the empty calories of sugar and your "empty" calories of protein. Neither are "empty" calories.The wide range of essential proteins has many many key mechanisms to maintain good health and muscle mass. Sugar/glucose, which the body makes provides fuel.
@Dr.WenliLiu

Though pure sugar and pure protein are different forms of energy, they are both free of nutrients. In this sense, protein powder is similar to sugar.

@@zeuso.1947 "Protein is not similar to sugar." ... Umh, I think she did say "PROTEIN POWDER", not PROTEIN... Protein powder has a lot of Maltodextrin in it.... What is Maltodextrin ? In short, Maltodextrin is a food additive used as a preservative. Its adverse effects include increased blood sugar levels and can also cause intestinal inflammation.... Similar as corn syrup, it made from GMO corns.

Apart from the higher thermic effect of protein causing you to absorb less calories than sugar for any excess amino acids to be converted to fat it must first be converted to glycogen which makes it much less likely to be converted to fat than excess sugar which spikes insulin more than protein and is way easier to over consume as it is not as satiating so youre way less likely to over consume protein so for this reason protein is good for weight loss. Protein and fat are essential macro nutrients unlike carbs and as you pointed out amino acids are the building blocks of the body so a protein shake is not as good as whole protein sources but is not exactly empty calories when it helps grow and repair tissue. Finally I don't know anyone that isn't trying to build muscle or diet that uses protein supplements so walk to the corner of the room and have a word with your self would you 😊

Protein doesn’t give energy. Only fat and carbs do that, aycarbs are the better choice because our brain and muscles thrive on carbs/sugar.

The carbon backbone of amino acids can be used for energy. However, when the nitrogen component is discarded, ammonia which is a toxic substance is produced.
