great points on the bumpers. I think maybe I would want to do both bumpers to get them closer to the metal body, but i guess I can see people wanting to keep it looking like factory. I never really thought about the reason the color looks off is because of the difference in the reflection on plastic verses metal. I was impressed with how you could discern the green and red hues in the color. I didn't realize there was so many selections from the same OEM paint for a particular car. I found this to be a great video, and I agree that it can be more efficient to replace a bumper sometimes rather than try to repair it. some people are concerned with bringing the value of the car down with after market parts. Personally, I'm not so worried about that; at least not with my present truck; who knows, I get another truck and I may change how I feel about that! Great video, Brian! Thanks!

Very nice blend job!! Sorry for the posts on your other videos about wearing gloves, thanks for including it in this one. When I went to paint school there were only 2 types of paint but a new one was coming, Acrylic Enamel with hardener! Flows like enamel, hardens like lacquer! I went to school for painting way before you were born, LOL!! Clean, clean, clean was what the instructor preached and he was right. Keep the videos coming.

The colour wheel is all you need to get started. That tells you what colours neutralize others and that’s a great basis. And just know if you have a colour that’s too dark sprayed out(which is very common) and you want it to lighten up by pulling black out, that’s going to make every other toner in the formula more powerful and more prominent in the colour. So you normally have to compensate for that by pulling out small amounts of others

I have a Dodge low mileage wheelchair accessible van and have purchased replacement quarters as well as a replacement front bumper cover. looks great. when using a spray out card, make sure to check the "face"(the color 90 degrees straight in front of the eyes) and the "flop"(the color on an angle). the flop will show a different color than the face color. so for this reason when checking a spray out card, check the face and flop. you may get the face right but when you look at an angle the flop color maybe off. also check the flake size for metallic colors. this was a A+ paint class video

I was leaning towards the kiwami 4 until I say your review of the NoName base gun... Did you ever try their clear gun? They are comparably priced. I like that the NN has taken the guess work out for a base and clear gun as well as the local(FL) support and supplies... I recall you making similar comments about both Guns so I have to ask... Which set(base/clear) would you buy? And if the Iwata... What Needle and cap set would you choose since NN has already covered that in their set. Again I can't thank you enough for all of the wonderful information you have and continue to provide.... 👍👍👍

I think the bumper covers and the rest of the body on vehicles age (ie: fade) differently. If you need to replace a front or rear bumper cover, I'd point out to the customer that you're planning to match that to the rest of the vehicle and do they want you to repaint the other one to match as well? Most people don't notice any anomalies, until after a body shop has touched their vehicle.

Great idea putting part of the bumper back on to colour match,I kind of agree what your friends customer said but I would have asked the bodyshop to give the rear bumper the new paint and usually rear bumpers are much easier to remove and paint than front ones so a bonus from the labour point,I guess your friend learnt a lesson...... its like me I used to say would you like me to do so and so and customer would respond.... well if you want to,....... no sir I dont want to I'm being generous so I don't ask anymore I just do as asked and usually no more

small advice from my workshop.we always hunt daylight for checking spray out card's.we do have different sun guns for bad weather and winter,3M,scangrip...but most important is that always 3 people watch the sample's in the same time.people have different quality of eyes,the one who hold sample only see the face while those looking aside have better picture.on light metalics spraying samples with one or more layer of clearcoat will change ton.wet and 1 day dry samples will differ!force drying samples with IC drayer can change ton especially on dark colours(avoid it)never trust light in spray booth(neon or led)....if customer take the job with sunglasses ,don;t worry😀

A quick comment from an automotive coatings specialist. Bumpers will always be difficult to match E2E especially colours that travel a lot (large differences in face to mid to flop angles). Some have said in the comments that it's down to substrate (plastic vs metal) whilst true to a certain degree, is not the major factor. A phenomenon called geometric metamerism plays a huge part in perceived poor colour match. Put simply, its the slight difference in angle where the parts meet. That's why even when you blend in to the wings, a difference is still observed. A little trick that I used in the field demonstrates this perfectly. Take a painted thin metal test panel and flip it over paint side down on a surface with a little give. Next lay a ruler or straight edge over half of the panel and lightly scribe with a biro to make a slight crease in the panel. Turn the panel back over and see the effect. I used to align the crease where the bumper meets the wing to illustrate to customers the real issue.

Brian, being in Florida the sun has damaged the top of my paint on my Pontiac fiero. My issue is that it's a pearl white and i don't have a paint code to match. My other issue is that my car has four different types of materials to paint over, sheet molded compound, reinforced reaction injection molding, reaction injection molding and thermo plastic olefin. Even though you say not to overthink it you can see why this makes me nervous lol. The car is very small so just doing the top won't require a lot of work but I'm not opposed to just paint the whole car in just a basic white but with all these different materials I just don't know. What do you think?

Really looking good color match. When u mentioned adding a little blue n green toner, is it ure trying to reduce the more reddish color from the spray out card sample? It seems by color wheel tint guide, by adding the opposite color of the color wheel, it will reduce the color hue of the red. I think we need a white board and marker pen to understand basic of color wheel 🤣. Anyway great job always Brian.

Agree! in my shop, they'd have your guts for garters if you went in with just a new bumper, new bumpers are always shoved in the back of the booth with another job, sometimes 2 new bumpers from 2 different cars, with an entirely different main job all masked up in the middle. This guy is living the dream
@MAn-ti3ul
@MAn-ti3ul Год назад
@@philiprose6226 Exactly. The shops I speak of have a minimum of 2 full downdraft booths. One gets the bumpers and the other for the cars. Most collision shops work on production not precision. Do all the jobs turnout perfect? No, but most customers don't notice and that's what the shop is banking on. If a customer does complain then they take the time to match the paint better. That is rare and the shop is still money ahead.
@philiprose6226
@philiprose6226 Год назад
@@MAn-ti3ul isn't it, they'll preach about quality to their customers, but what they really care about is units and money. 25 a day they try to send home. Out of a shop designed 20 years ago to manage half that 😅. In some ways they are right, I worked at one place and made such a nice job, buffed it to perfection, that I spied on the customer to see their reaction. She didn't even look at the job and was just happy that her car had been cleaned inside. She would have been happy with it straight out the booth!!

Worst cases I have are when customers come to the paint shop, asking for a color match and they bring me a piece of the bumper, and they tell me they're doing a bumper cover, fender, maybe a hood. Great content! But I’m going to challenge you on the “don’t sand the sealer” comment. You can correct a lot of minor issues by sanding the sealer rather than the base. It’s a little faster and helps kick the problem that needs attention a little easier. Try sanding the sealer with 1500. I think people say not to sand sealer because it doesn’t sand well with anything more aggressive than 1500.

I ordered small bottles of paint NT2 and it didn’t match, I talked to them they have a guarantee. But is it user error is there something I could do to make it match better? When you buy these paints as a DIY it comes pre mixed. And I don’t have the ability to mix and match the paint.

I actually do this .. all the guysthought I was nuts.. I use ppg water and another trick I do is when doing a white tri coat I leave out 10% of the white and it’s usually really close.

As a finish color, over sanded primer, has anyone sprayed gloss hammered black for two light coats, and finished it with two medium coats of satin dark or navy blue? I want to have the hammered texture, but not so shiney, and I can't find hammered blue shades either. So I thought this would do. Both colors would be Rust-Oleum 2x brand laquer paints. I'd apply each coat about 20 to 25 minutes apart in the shade of an open carport so each layer wouldn't be wet, but just slightly tacky to surface feel dry.

I got a question why does the paint job I just did gets darker depending on what ange I'm looking at it? So at certain angle it looks darker than the cars original color at just the right position it looks like perfect match and at certain angle it even looks lighter! Is this a common phenomenon in car painting?

Man.. all I'm gonna say is we work in a tough industry. We recently painted the side of a metallic red Mazda (replaced rear door, blended into front door and rear quarter) and then they proceeded to complain because the already mismatched front and rear bumper didn't match the fresh paint that we did. Needless to say that was a nightmare and we ended up making little on the job. Also just wanted to say that I love these vids and have personally learned a lot from them but as a ppg deltron user I had to figure out how to do certain things with our own system ( like how to make clear base). One thing I find that happens, and I'm not sure how to really correct it, is that when you put fresh clear onto a panel you're blending in to it seems to make the color look darker than it originally was. I try to always 800 panels down to eliminate most of the original clear but it still happens.

I sprayed Deltron for about 15 yrs and ran into the darkening clear coat effect alot. Always seems to be worse on Hondas for some reason. Especially on light metallic colors. I found that if you stop a little short from the edge on the first coat of clear and then do a full coat of clear the panel doesn't look as dark to the adjacent panels.

@MrDuLukes Год назад
Clearcoat isn't 100% clear. Depending on the brand they turn yellow or darker often. Also with the added layers of clear, the light has to travel through more layers, and gets broken different, alternating the colour beneath and/or giving it a magnifying-effect. It truly is a tough industry, sometimes you get those jobs where you don't make money or even lose some, got to get that back in different jobs then, learn from it and talk with the customer to make sure he/she understands what will be done and why.

Buff your blend panel with a white wool pad BEFORE you sand, then prepsol it and sand. The buffing “cleans” the weathered clear, then your first coat of clear should only go to your blend, the 2nd to whole panel to prevent refraction.

They can either pay for it, or take a hike. Stop catering to ignorance. I'm not going to pay out of my pocket to do extra panels. Red changes rapidly out in the sun. Pick the best spot and match it then blend what you can. I deal with that crap all the time. I'm not a magician. These expectations need to be set before you even start the job.

I bought the color code for my car its molten orange from ford, now the problem is that the red underneath the metallic looks like its to dark, what does that mean? Wrong color red or not enough metallic?

Brian is correct. Bumpers never match the rest of the car. I use to work at a car plant and we use to see that all the time coming down the quality line

Some manufacturers are better and some worse. On my Honda Accord CU2 Pearl White the front matches perfectly from the factory, but the rear bumper is so off in lots of lights, it drives me crazy.
@marcuswhite1403
@marcuswhite1403 Год назад
@@mwelke90 you're right. I worked at a Nissan plant and certain colors were terrible. I remembered seeing a brand new Cadillac car that was Pearl white sitting at a fast food restaurant. Both bumpers were way darker than the rest of the car. Most customers don't pay attention to that when they buy a car. Once they know you had to paint a bumper on it, they notice it
