That was a learning curve between the ancient style pan and the modern western style pan and the recovery rate between them . Wow Gadzee certainly had a cracker of a day with that sluice box good on the man, thanks for posting and give Fern a scratch behind the ear for me.

Never done any prospecting, its a bit of a way to the goldfeilds. but I was fishing a beach creek this weekend, not catching anything, and noticed the recent heavy rains had churned up some some black sand sediment that was getting caught up in areas where the current was causing slow eddys. I was about to give up on the fishing and start collecting handfuls of this black sand, just for entertainment. then it started bucketing down, and opted to return to camp for some whiskey by the fire and fiddle with the radio instead. but I'll surely chuck a small shovel and some extra buckets in next time I visit that spot. I know there were tin and silver mines in the area. I've got some good fish out of that spot, but some days you need other distractions. I enjoy fishing and Ham radio, which are both part skill, part equipment, part conditions, and luck. I think prospecting would be similarly appealing. Not expecting to find any nuggets, but it could be some fun. I like silver more than gold anyway. I have a metallurgist friend who could probably help refine it, whatever it is. PS, My cat always gets a scratch on the ears when you ask, and If I remember, I ask her to bless my gear if she wants some fish when I get back. I forgot to this weekend.

Back in the 1970's when I was panning in Clear Creek up the mountains from Golden I used a WOK! I really liked the handles which kept my hands out of the cold water.

I found a dry old river bed last week , 30 minutes of digging and an hour panning it at the river got me 3 grams last week , it was 5 unclassified 10 litre buckets .. this coming weekend I will be spending a full day there .. it’s a bit of a hike but should be well worth it , I will send you some photos on msger of what I get 👍🏼👍🏼

Chris have you ever made a Elutriation Tower to clean your gold? The Sluice Goose Golddrop one is an example, but you can make a hillbilly version for around $50. The nice thing is that it works on gold that sluices and miller tables have trouble with.

I love my XP batea. I use a 16" walmart pizza screen reinforced with wire to classify. Some rubber tubing on its edges helps the slipping and then you can dump it right out.

Should do a video on where in the creek to pan. I know there are certain places in creek bends where gold is more concentrated.

Yeah when I went out go panning one time I thought it was a clay that I had dug up and put it in my pan started breaking it up and then realized it was dog poop that gross me out and I still found cold Arizona

Chris, another entertaining and educational episode; well done! Does the Batea/Potato pan have to be 'seasoned' like an iron skillet? I would imagine heating the new pan with a torch till it cools to a 'gunmetal blue' would help reveal the gold; what do you think? Do you let the pan naturally rust or should you oil it? Maybe oiling would not be good as it might 'float' the gold out of the pan? Why does clay prevent gold from sinking? I noticed Gadzie breaking up the clay clumps as he sluiced; does the clay trap gold 'in it' or 'on it'?

They use hand made ones in Panama and are definitely better than flat pans.

I just did some searching and found betea pans costing $ 85 AUD and up 👀 . I mean , I would understand if it was made out of stainless steel but they are only plain low carbon steel ( and of course stainless would not take to seasoning if at all ) Great video and I’m still searching for a less expensive betea 😉

Where is that video of you trashing the gold fox mini monster, I tested that problem you had with yours how the grizzly looks to be over the mat, well due to the water volume it lands in the back of the sluice, and I lost only one micro speck in a controlled test, like I put 5 pieces in it and my mini caught 6, lol
