In this video I take you through my thought process when planning for a long road trip. If you own a Tesla this video is NOT for you. This is for EV owners who have EVs with no or poor route planning.
Actual roadtrip videos can be found when posted on my channel!
The App I used is called A Better Route Planner (ABRP). You can use this online or on a phone. There is subscription that you can pay for that is totally worth it if you drive a lot!

If you’re not able to charge up in NOLA, and you can’t make it to Gulfport you can head north on I-55 and go to EA in Hammond, LA. Plenty of Level 2 in NOLA area though. ENTERGY recently installed dozens of free Level 2 ChargePoints throughout the city.

We're heading that way in a few weeks from Colorado in our Mach-E. San Antonio, NO, Biloxi, Memphis, Branson, KC. 6 casinos, 6 presidential libraries, and more. The tricky charge should be Jackson MS. The rest looks OK.

Many RU-vid EV Road Trippers do interstate hugs and hop from EA to EA. If I had an ID4 w/3yr plan, I prob would to. I find as a soon to be empty nester the exploring aspect of an EV road trip to be an engaging past time. I have found it to be an enjoyable hobby as of late. I am not a fan of EA for a few reasons. One, they are almost always crowded. Second, the network is about the same in reliability as other DCFC. They almost always have one or two out of service. I have a different use case to making a long interstate travel though. If that were my goal, interstate hugging doing EA hops would prob be the way to go. I use instead a lot of utilities placed ones that are commonly ChargePoint. EVgo too has sunk a lot of cash into upgrading their stations around us, so that too is pretty good alternatives. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.

Thanks for sharing, I have had my ID.4 for almost two months now and still no long road trip yet, but it's coming. I have been to the Buck-ee's in Leed, AL and was excited to see the Eletricfy America (EA) charging stations along side Tesla one. Thanks again, and, God bless 🤓

This is amazing! Honestly, half of the "fear" of getting an EV is planning these trips but this makes it feel so much more manageable. Would you be open to disclosing the overall cost of charging for the trip?

I live in Louisiana. Use EA in eastern part of Houston. Vidor, Texas is good EA. Sulphur, LA can be hit or miss. Breaux Bridge is great. Nothing in NOLA except a Chevy dealership and level 2’s.

Don’t worry about Hope, Arkansas. It is a good location. We have used it a few times. Nice Mexican restaurant right there

Why a 70% SOC charging cap for you iD4 on a road trip? Is that because of the charging curve? Normally on a road trip I charge until the charger slows down around 85%-90% SOC. Love the trip. I just wrapped up a DC to FL roundtrip. It looks like you will experience far fewer derated EA's that we did no the I95 corridor. Have fun!

Yes because of the charging curve! Once you get to 60-70ish it dips to 80kWs but there is enough range to get to the next charger and get the faster speeds! I had a ton of derated chargers today. This summer is going to be a total mess… Thanks!

Bon voyage! I'm glad you're not doing this in summer. It would make me so nervous having a low battery and chargers not working during extreme temps.

I charge up to 80% nearly every stop, to leave more safety buffer just in case. Way more peace of mind. Who cares if it takes 3 minutes longer?
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Год назад
If you only charge to what you need you will save more than 3 minutes. I will likely save 10 minutesish per stop if I only need to charge to 50-60%. Times that by 14 stops. That saves me over two hours of charging. Pretty big deal.

But if you're not in a hurry, then it doesn't matter! I am in a hurry though for this trip.

@@theaverageev I've done the math for my Mach-E and charging 30-80% instead of 10-60% only adds about 3 minutes. But it depends greatly on the charge curve of the vehicle. Mine is fairly flat(ish) all the way to 80%. Not sure about the ID.4 tho.
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Год назад
Gotcha. That math definitely adds up. The ID.4 rips at the bottom of the pack. I've never done a 0-80% but charging 0-50% vs 30-80% should be about 7-10 minutes. I just tried to calculate it. I will definitely report back after my trip. I was assuming you were an ID.4 driver! Glad to see other people watch as well. The Mach-e does not have has as big a charge speed at the bottom of the pack as the US built ID.4s. So 30-80% sounds like a great strategy. Charging strategy can be different for different cars once you run the numbers. Sometimes I get stuck in ID.4 world and forget all EVs are different. Thanks for keeping me in check!

Thanks for watching! The Westminster charger works with the Shell y app, the screen is still messed up though!
