Bug spray headlight restoration. This is a video to show you how bug spray with DEET, can clean and restore headlights by removing oxidation, haze, and yellowing plastic. Hopefully this clears things up and shows you the truth behind using bug spray to restore headlights!
The problem with the bug spray is that it doesnt last and it will damage your headlights and can damage your paint and trim. I go into why the OFF Deep Woods bug spray works, how it can damage your paint, and if you do want to try it, how to apply it to reduce the chances of any damage. I do not recommend using this method to clear up your headlights, instead I recommend using toothpaste which will not damage your headlights or the surrounding trim/paint.
Here is the BEST method to use to make your headlights permanently clear! • How to Restore Headlig...
Here is how to use Toothpaste to get the same results: • Headlight Restoration ...

Gonna add some wisdom and experience, because I always love Chris's videos and tutorials: When I was managing an auto parts store a lifetime ago, we often had customers come in for headlight restoration products. The Meguiar's HLR kit was pure trash. Most of the over the counter kits were. The 3M kit was excellent (and time consuming), but they offered two versions of it, which was confusing to the consumer: one had a sealant for after, the other did not. TLDR: you HAVE to have some type of sealant or clear coat to apply right after doing a headlight restoration. As others have stated, there is no UV protective coating/barrier on oxidized headlights, or following a restoration with solvents/wet sanding. I always start with Turtle Wax rubbing compound. It has some nice abrasives in it to tear through the oxidation, it's easy to apply and remove, and you can make multiple passes. Safer than "the toothpaste method" others have prescribed. But this hand polishing only goes so far on severely oxidized headlights. Anyway, failure to seal your work after it's done being restored is never a product's fault. You gotta take that extra step, which unfortunately most HLR kits don't include. Could be intentional, so you'll use their product more often. [shrug] Automotive wax works fine, but must be reapplied every couple months. Paint sealants work better. Taping off the affected body/paintwork and spray painting the HLs with VHT/Duplicolor clear coat has excellent results and the least maintenance. Hope this helps!

Works like a charm. Also USE white distilled vinegar to neutralize the deet. Spray it directly on the headlight cover rinse it off with water. This stops the chemical reaction and hardens the cover so it won't be tacky

I use bug spray as the first phase, then wash/rinse completely. Next I use M105, then M205 with hand buffer pad. The last phase is the UV protectant wax - usually Griots Garage Finishing Sealant. The results are very presentable good and it seems to last. The bug spray takes off a lot of the faded plastic and I found it is more effective than wet sanding.

@patrickvolpe7508
@patrickvolpe7508 3 года назад
I used this method on a 2003 Camry and various makes of car. It works great. Two months later-still clear headlights. I never had a problem with it removing paint or clear-coat. Nitrile gloves & well ventilated area a must. First, Wash & Rinse a few times & dry out thoroughly before using the off spray . As far as caution during the off application, you may want to pop your hood and tape off the rest of the area. You can apply it then let it sit for no more than 1 minute. (Do not let it dry). Then wipe off as much as you can. Reapply the off application at least once. After the off application has dried COMPLETELY, you may wash/rinse with soap&water.
@chellybabyme
@chellybabyme 2 месяца назад
Wait a minute. You said after it dries completely rinse it with water. But first you said don't let the off spray dry. Can you clarify please?
@patrickvolpe7508
@patrickvolpe7508 2 месяца назад
@@chellybabyme hello I see that wasn’t very clear. Basically you will probably spray and wipe twice. After the second time, it should be as clean as it’s going to get. Then you can wipe off as much as you can and then let it dry. The temperature I believe this works best at above 70°F. do this in a well ventilated area. I used this method on a Toyota, a Kia, a Ford and a Dodge.

I never tried bug spray but today I did use Sylvania's Headlight Restoration kit on a 2008 Honda CRV. The headlight lenses were severely weathered and UV damaged to the point where the light beams were about 50% of normal. I followed the packaged instructions and a RU-vid video by Brian Noble. It took me about 90 minutes and the results were very impressive. In fact, they look almost new! We'll see how long the treatment lasts but if I have to repeat it every year, it will still be worth the time and expense ($30.00).

Chris, our assistant fleet manager w/ S.O. found using carb/throttle body cleaner works, on light bars and we tried it on headlights and it works. Just spray it on a shop towel. Not microfiber or anything else, just a red clean shop towel. You use it in a left to right motion, straight lines. Doesn't leave the mess of the bug spray. We re-use the light bars. The lenses are not cheap. Lasts for quite a while. Keep it up. This steve

@ThaIceMan05
@ThaIceMan05 9 лет назад
Nope, nothing. My car is fairly new and the headlights were starting to haze after a couple years but they are still clear. They are dirty from the inside, lol. The key is that after you use the bug spray, you scrub with soap and water. You don't just do a gentle wash. I used Repel with 40% Deet. I didn't use a lot either. You may have used a little too much and/or not cleaning it good enough. Toothpaste didn't do anything but mess up my car's clear coat a little, but it's not noticeable.
@ThaIceMan05
@ThaIceMan05 9 лет назад
To add on, anything that you use on your headlights takes off the clear coat on your lenses and you have to reapply clear coat to them. So it really doesn't matter what you use, you just have to apply some protectant to the lens.

Actually it's a good idea and I have also tried it, but the ones you can get in Paint jobs are usually 1K acrylic clear cost spray cans. now these spray cans are cool and they will of course give them a longer lasting clear look but be aware! They also get doll because they are not as hard as the clear coat you spray on the cars. You will have to use a 2K clear coat. This contains two compounds. Believe me this is the only way for a long-term solution and I know what I'm talking about 😉

Tried toothpaste, lighter fluid, WD 40, etc. Think this might be a quick & cheap fix for now as opposed to diving around with badly oxidized headlights. I appreciate the close up of the plastic & will be sure to rinse well! Not sure I care much for the clear coat that's already damaged on a 10 year old car:) I'll be sure to record my results.

I used stuff that had 15% deet. I used to just little bit and it worked great! I sprayed vinegar right away to clean it off. I didn’t let the deet sit more than 1 minute. Washed it with vinegar. Water and isopropyl alcohol and they look awesome. Just use a little bit of the big spray.

I was looking at different chemicals to remove different types of oxidation, depending on the severity of the oxidation or if it is actually damaged. I'm sure someone has probably mentioned this, but you can wipe down your head light and clean until dry, then use an automotive grade clear coat and seal it. Then you won't have to clean it over and over. The clear coat will seal your work and protect it.
@JanelleStClair

Here's an idea. How about taping up the headlight and cover the hood and bumper with a plastic bag (like you did in your video where you wet sand the headlight three times) and then use the bug spray, wash the headlamp and then apply wax let dry and buff. The combination of the two would be less time consuming with the least amount of effort and modest cost. What do you think?

That sounds good for an old car you're not that concerned with. But being the deet melts the plastic, it may imbed impurities into the plastic. Maybe wet sand first then do the deet to process on.

I accidentally dripped some brake fluid on a hazy headlight one time, and watched it clear up the haze instantly. Of course, after wiping the entire headlight to clean all the haze, I cleaned it off with glass cleaner to remove any trace of the brake fluid. That basically did the same thing as DEET, and lasted dang near a year, slowly getting hazy again (10+ year old truck).

Question... if you don't feel like going through all of that wet sanding, couldn't you just use the bug spray to clean them and then follow up with the clear gloss paint with UV protection to keep them from fogging again?
@chrisfix

mydoggylives No you cannot because you need to have the sanding to give the paint something to grip onto. Plus, you will never get all of the bug spray off and the paint will end up bubbling. Too bad it wasnt that easy and good thinking though!

DEET was developed/discovered as a solvent for plastic, and I recall melting and sticking the knob of fishing reels etc. as a kid. You just destroyed your headlight, and the damage will go far deeper than the surface oxidation which you could have easily buffed off using PlastX without ever resorting to sandpaper, etc. I still think minimal removal of material, followed by frequent use of good modern polymer car 'wax' will keep the lights newer longer than the drastic sand-and-spraycoat that commits you permanently to major effort and loss of plastic material. No spray coat is as tough as the OEM polycarbonate lens material.

PlastX and Mothers Aluminum cleaner worked to make the lens more invisible and clear....made the surface real smooth too.....but did NOTHING to remove the yellow-tinting. The DEET removed the yellow-tinge

I work at a shop, and some of my buddys have been telling me this stuff works, and I've been hesitant to try it, but they have convinced me to use transmission fluid to do it so i don't know what I've been waiting for haha. The method i have used on at least 30 cars in my shop is to wet sand the lens with 320 grit and then 1200 grit (using straight line sanding seems to work better) then i use a paint buffer with a cotton/wool pad to polish using a mild rubbing compound, I have skipped the sanding part before and still had decent results but when you sand first you defiantly have a better and longer lasting lens, i have had some stay in good shape for a couple years after this method. P.S. just like in buffing paint be careful to keep buffer moving quickly and use water regularly so as not to overheat the plastic and cause melt spotting which would require deep sanding and re-polish,

Based on what I'm seeing, it's not bad as a last resort BUT what you need to do is completely remove and neutralize all of the remaining bug spray or it will eat through more plastic and continue to melt. First with vinegar (which halts the melting and makes it no longer tacky), then a cleaning with water, then a waxing or film coating. I've seen folks claim that if you remove all the bugspray and apply a wax coat, you can get a year or more before it becomes hazy again. The downside is that there's a lot of uncertainty because it spends on how deep the abrasions before applying the spray and any leftover bugspray you miss could create a structural weakness. But if you neutralize and remove ALL of the DEET, I'm seeing people say you can expect 1-3 months before the fogginess comes back and a year or more with protective coating. I'm about to test this myself.

What if you use the bug spray (I know you don't recommend it, but bare with me) then after the 10 minutes you clean it off, then when all is said and done you spray it with the clear coat from your other video. Wouldn't that make it more permanent? Love your videos!
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 лет назад
marksrobby There are two problems with using bug spray. First, the deet melts the plastic. You will not be able to "wipe off the deet" because if you wipe the lens with deet on it, the lens will become foggy because the plastic is dissolved. Even if you can wipe it off, it wont fully come off. I had to wet sand mine for it to come off completely (even after trying soap, water, alcohol, etc) And second, you do not want a super smooth surface because the clear coat wont adhere. You want to sand it to get the grooves. This video gives a pretty good explanation of how the paint grips and the reason I go from 600 grit to 2000 grit: How to Restore Brake Lights PERMANENTLY
