Yes! I can't beleive i haven't found this video in all the time i've searched info on this. I was worried that connecting the line level output into the mic level input would be harmful to my camera but this gave me the proper info i needed. Thanks!
I get a loud hiss trying this with the zoom h1. What am I doing wrong? I have a lav mic plugged into the line in and the line out goes to my Panasonic G85 mic jack. Lowering the output volume in the zoom doesn't seem to change the hiss, it's like very strong background noise.
Try raising the H1 output then lowering the input level if necessary. If this doesn't resolve the issue, please email info@zoom-na.com for further troubleshooting.
Question: I’m sending sound from the line out to my A7sII, and it looks like from the levels that I’m not getting separate L and R tracks - as if they’re mixed, identical meters. Can I output tracks 1 and 2 as individual tracks so I can mix later? If so, how?
Hi, very interesting video! I have a Zoom Q3HD and a Canon 70D. I was thinking of buying an external camera, but then I thought since I have the Zoom, maybe I could use it. Would a simple 3.5" cable work with the Zoom Q3HD?
Hi, @ZoomSoundLab, is the cable male to male TRS any in particular to be used in Zoom H5, or can I use any brand or as in any normal male to male TRS AUX Cable? Thanks in advance.
@@williamallen4607YES! I am not picking up any sound to my camera using a trs to trs. PLEASE HELP!!!! I am going to buy a trrs to trs adapter. Hopefully this works. SO FRUSTRATING
Thank you for the video. Can you please tell me how to prevent getting the camera/tripod handling noise into the recorded sound when I mount my zoom h5 directly onto camera's hotshoe mount? In my experience when I used the zoom h5 on camera instead of microphone, I got all kind of handling noise into the signal and the audio is unusable, what is the solution? Will you make some kind of shock mount for field recorders to prevent this kind of issue with noise when handling camera/operating tripod? Many thanks for your reply.
So much I didn’t understand in this video 🥲 What cables do I need to purchase to use this? Will the sound go directly from the zoom into the camera or does it pick up any of the camera microphone, because DLSR Mics suck and it can’t have that sound in it.
Am I doing this right? I am feeding a 'Movo MV-RC100 3.5mm Male Line-in to Male Microphone Attenuator Cable' from my zoom line out into mic in on the GH5 using a Sennheiser AVX wireless system it works but nowhere near as good as it does straight into the Zoom, it seems to be picking up more noise? what am I doing wrong? Surely I should be able to get a good recording going into the GH5 from the Zoom Line Out on this setup. Please help. Hugh
Shame it cannot generate a 1KHz lineup tone. I've tried to copy a file with the tone on to an SD card but my Zoom H6 does not see the file. The file needs to have a name that the recorder would generate eg. ZOOM0001 which is a bit confusing. Also if I create a dedicated folder for my lineup tone the recorder won't see it.
Which Zoom field recorder does everyone think sounds the best overall? And which one goes with a camcorder the easiest, and with the least of hassles? Thank you...SBN RESONATE
HELP: I want to import a music backing track to lay vocals along side to be mixed later IN THE H6. There is not ONE video that explains how to do this that works. I tried even converting the backing track to the specs the H6 is recording at on my laptop on the SD as I saw in a video but when I go back to the H6 and put the SD back in the H6 I can't find the backing track to play I want to use to lay vocals. I'm not talking about overdubbing I just need the track to be able to be referenced while recording. Can anyone help me or lead me to a very specific and good english video that shows how?
Damn this is super quality content. Brief, straight to the point. But one question. If we record “directly” to the dslr, does it mean we bypass the zoom recorder, and the sound input form the mic just go to the dslr ? My point is, i believe zoom recorder has way better quality than the camera internal preamp. Or, both the cam and the zoom will record the sound. Because you said “backup”
I've started using my Zoom h1 while recording videos on my A7S II + Zhiyun gimbal with a 3.5mm audio cable and noticed there were many noises probably from the incompletely connected cable. Is there any solution for this? The audio on Zoom itself seems to be fine. Would it help if I used more expensive a cable?
Is it possible to connect the H8 zoom recorder to a DSLR camera like the Canon T5i? Or is it a too heavy recorder to connect to the hot shoe mount using the HS1 adapter?
Your F1 would be much more useful with a tripod screw socket.Adapters are just one more thing to carry. It would be more useful than the two bars in the back. Maybe its ok for the shotgun mic, but for other applications a tripod screw would be much more helpful. It would allow for many more practical mounting situations.
I plugged the H2N into my Olympus OMD EM1 and, while the levels on the Zoom were good, it just smashed the camera audio.. Came out super distorted.. I note in this video the setting of the output gain on the zoom in order to preclude this event, however these menu options are not available on the H2N... So... we can't perform this operation with the H2N....? Only available for some Zoom recorders....?
This is the closest answer I've gotten for what I need help with. I have an H4N, an external microphone (deity), and dslr (t5i). I'd like the sound from the external mic recorded onto the video footage and a backup with the H4N. I have an XLR cable from H4N going to external mic. An attenuator cable from H4N going to dslr. I can't seem to get good sound on the camera footage with this setup. H4N clips sound great. From your video I don't see the option to adjust Line Output Level on my H4N. Line Output Level isn't an option. As I scroll through the options this is what I see 1. LO CUT (mic & input: off) 2.COMP/LIMITn(mic & input: off) 3. MONITOR: ON 4. LEVEL AUTO: OFF 5. MONO MIX: OFF 6. MS MATRIX: OFF 7. PHANTOM +24V 8. PLUG-IN: ON It looks like you're showing us on an H5N? What is the equivalent option with the H4N? Thanks for your help.
do they have there Audio Recorders for cameras like the Panasonic DC-FZ80 that has only HDMI input, there's External Mics, with HDMI but was wondering if i could buy one of these for my camera Type TY and ty for ur video.
This would depend on your specific camera model and settings. By default, your camera would most likely sync the audio/video and save as a single file.
Hi there, thank you for the video. I have a sony6400 and a zoom H2n would like to use the camera and the record on the h2n sinultaneously so then I don‘t need to sync it. Which cable should I buy? Thank you
Hi Antonio, this exactly what I have been trying to understand as well. Did you figure out what cable you need to record directly to your camera without having to sync in post? Appreciate your time. Best, Martino
I have a GH5 and an H4N. Do you have any tips for getting the best results from that specific setup? I am interested in knowing how the turning up the volume on the H4N will affect the preamp recording level on the GH5.
Can it work with a smartphone (iPhone, Samsung, or any of the common brands)? I'd like to have decent recording of my band in live situations but can't invest in a DSLR at the moment...
Is it also possible to record two clean audio tracks onto the camera? I'm planning to connect 2 mics to the H6N and then via a Line-Out cable to my camera. But I'd love to record one mic on the left channel in the cam and the other mic on the right channel. Any chance to do that?!
The audio is actually saved on the camera is this correct? Are you just utilizing the Zoom as an interface for mic and mixing capabilites for better quality? The Zoom will have a backup audio if i want to edit it more say add compression or other signal processing and sync it back to the video?
Hi! My camera doesn't have an audio input.. Do you recommend to buy a new camera or the external microphone and then sync the audio and the video with a software?
It would be easier to sync the audio & video if your camera has an external microphone input. However, you can also sync the audio to the video manually, using your camera's audio as a reference.
I have a Zoom H6 connected to a Canon 70D, sending audio from H6 to the camera. However I feel the audio recorded has some noise. What kind of settings do I have to do to have a clean audio?
You need a splitter only if you want to monitor audio, but you need the attenuator to send to most cameras, since the line output of the H4n is too high of a level for most camera audio inputs.
When using the attenuator cable to connect a H4N recorder to a DSLR, will the DSLR typically use the same sample rate and bit depth that the H4N is set to? For example, if I have 48khz 16bit WAV selected on the H4N, and have it connected directly to the DSLR, will the DSLR capture the audio in that format?
I'm wondering, won't the quality be better if you record the audio onto the zoom recorder then sync later. Otherwise when you plug into camera, the camera does its own processing and converting which is probably less than quality on an affordable camera. It'd be nice to save time by the audio and video already being synced but im nervous about the quality loss
Yep. While the method in this video is convenient you’re much better off syncing in post. For one, if you’re using a good microphone with XLR cables then you have balanced cables all the way to the recorder which prevents a lot of interference (eg; RF noise from cellphones and other wireless devices)
It looks like the viewfinder is unusable with the recorder mounted. Are there adapters available that can allow the recorder to be mounted further forward to free up the viewfinder?
I have a question using the H5 with a Canon 5D Mark IV. I’ve connected a Sennheiser shotgun mic and a Sennheiser wireless lavaliere mic to the XLR 1 and XLR 2 inputs on the H5. I’m using the LINE OUT on the H5 to connect to the Mic input on the Canon 5D. Both the Shotgun Mic (XLR1) and the Lav (XLR 2) are recording onto the LEFT channel on the Canon 5D video file. Is there any way to get XLR 1 to record on the LEFT channel of the Canon and and XLR 2 to record on the RIGHT channel of the Cannon? That is - can one input record on one channel and the other input record on the other channel?
You will need to stereo link inputs 1 and 2 on the H5. Additionally, it sounds like you may be using a TS cable when you will need a TRS cable to connect from the H5 to the camera.
@@ZoomSoundLab Thanks! Changing the cable to TSR and stereo linking the inputs 1 and 2 worked. As you noted in an email, you need to press inputs 1 and 2 simultaneously rather than the way the manual described to stereo link in multifile mode.
ZoomSoundLab the problem is I have used an aux cable, but it is not working. I have an canon SL2 and I don't know how to use my Zoom H1 as a connected audio to the camera. Do you know how to do this?
great except it didn't work. no audio coming through camera. the zoom is definitely working - can hear audio coming in directly through the zoom, but hear nothing when in the 5D.
Got my H6 a couple of days ago. While really impressed and happy with the package, I am terribly confused and doubtful about it's viability mounted on my dslr / shoulder rig... It's picking up so much "vibrations" (I guess, very damped low frequency sounds, but very present) from my hands or whatever operations I make while filming that it just ruins the audio... I just ordered a Rycote shock mount specially designed for Zoom devices, bit seeing mixed reviews I am not get optimistic about it, plus there aren't really any othr alternatives out there to solve this critical issue .. :( I hope you could eventually point some ways to avoid this? Otherwise great value packed in a little device!
A shock mount should help to reduce the handling noise. If you find that the sounds are mostly low frequency, you could also try enabling the Lo Cut option. This option can be found in the Menu, under the Input & Output section.
@@ZoomSoundLab thank you for the fast reply :) ... Waiting for my Rycote shock absorber to test it out... I'm a bit scared to setup filters on the base audio recordings though, but this is mainly because I am a noob and need some time and tests to figure out the risks of doing so. Thanks again.
I've connected my Zoom H6 to my Nikon D3300 but the audio on the video is just constant white noise and the Zoom gave some kind of message after recording and didn't record an audio file. Should the final audio be part of the video and is there no way to set the Nikons video audio to be the Zoom?
Hi, I´m using an H4NPro with a Nikon D3200 and the APH-4N Pro accesory pack to connect each other, and when I plug both the signal recorded in the DSLR is way too noisy to be used. I tried the ZOOM mics and a Shure SM57 plugged in the unit, didnt fix it, and tried with batteries and with the power supply provided, but the noise still there. Please suggetions! Thanks.
It might be related to the H4n input/output levels and/or the camera input level. Please email info@zoom-na.com or call (631) 542-5270 and we can assist.
@@ZoomSoundLab Hi, after several tests just found out that the issue is on the Nikon. It´s preamp is super super noisy so when the signal is attenuate it is jusst impossible to work. Using all of the other components but a common TRS/TRS audio cable and minimum gain (it is call sensitivityy on the D3200 the problem is solved.
@@ZoomSoundLab My concern is that the output of the H2 is line level while the input of my NEX-7 is mic level. There is no gain control on the Sony's mic input in the settings. Should I use an attenuator cable?
Hi there :) Thanks for the vid.. My menu doesn't have IN/OUT option, do you know why? It goes: FILE..FOLDER..INPUT..REC..TOOL..etc! So I my Canon 80D doesn't recognise the Zoom :(( Any troubleshooting would be appreciated :)
@@danielmenendez7225 The fat pipe that brings water to your neighborhood vs the small pipe that brings the water to your faucet. If you got the street pressure in your kitchen your faucet would explode. You can reduce the signal "pressure" through the (expensive) attenuation cable or electronically using a cheap cable if you have the H5/H6.
Hello! Tell me, do I need special splitter cable to connect to a dslr camera with zoom H4N PRO? . And do I need splitter cable to connect the zoom H5? Or I can use an ordinary cable?
There is no splitter cable necessary to connect an H4n Pro or H5 to your DSLR. You can connect any standard 3.5mm stereo audio cable from the Zoom device's output to your DSLR audio input. If the output from the recorder is too high, you may need to lower the output level or use an attenuator cable to reduce the signal. If you need to connect headphones in addition to outputting the audio to your DSLR, then you will need a splitter cable.
The camera would need a microphone input for this set up. You can still record using your Zoom Handheld Recorder and sync the audio in post production.
ZoomSoundLab thank you! I have the zoom h5 and I really love the recordings on there. Was just wondering on which DSLR camera I should upgrade to... Basically I should make sure it has external microphone input. Thanks!
If you are recording on both the H5 and your DSLR, you will need to sync the audio/video. You do not necessarily need to press record on both devices at the same time. You can also choose to record only using the DSLR and the audio/video would be in sync automatically.
ZoomSoundLab. ok thanks another question though... if you use the bottom input of the H5 which u can put the two cable of your guitar from the last chain of your pedalboard (Stereo) it will will record the sound if you just press the record on dslr like what u said thanks Zoom
"You do not necessarily need to press record on both devices at the same time."? What do you mean? If you don't press rec on zoom manually it will NOT start recording on the same Zoom. It will only record on DSLR through zoom mic. Is there any way to start both recordings (on dslr through zoom mic AND on Zoom memory) with only one press of rec button on dslr?
Hi, the sound cracks from time to time but not because of peaking (it can happen when it's mor or less silent). Here are my settings: Zoom H1: Input level 70, lo cut - off. Auto level - off. Rec format - wav. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: Microphone input - 70%. Ch 1 and Ch 2 input levels: Mic. Ch 1 input 70 %. Ch 2 uses Ch 1 input - Yes. Ch 2 input - 70%. Speaker volume - 50% What can be wrong?
@@ZoomSoundLab how exactly would you just connect the line out on the and the USB back to the camera to save on to its SD card. I really appreciate you help
@@ZoomSoundLab ok im in a WIERD situation my camera does have a headphone port, and my zoom h4n pro line out is the headphone port? Any recommendations on a cord here? Thx
It is possible that the audio input on the camera has a noticeable noise, and is causing the effect you are describing. For more specific information, or further troubleshooting, we would recommend contacting info@zoom-na.com
ZoomSoundLab ZoomSoundLab well, I just uploaded a video to my computer with just using the camera and the sound is fine so perhaps it’s the zoom? Though when listening to the device with headphones I can’t really hear the noise, but once uploaded to my computer then I can hear some fuzzy noise.. So if it’s the zoom what can I do to fix that? Plus, I don’t know how to transfer the zoom H4n audio straight to my computer, I’ve got a USB cable, but apparently you need to go on USB mode on the menu for your computer to recognise the device, but there is no USB function on the zoom menu the last thing on the menu is an SD card and that’s it?
If I am recording with an external mic via XLR and the built in capsule on my H5 at the same time, will both signals be sent through the line out? Is there a way to tell the recorder which channel to output?
He guys Is there any way to get my H4n to go in and out of Pause record at the same time as I press the record button on my Canon XA-30 Video Camera or my Canon T5i?
Every thing is Possible it just a mater of cost. Too bad DSLR and even Video Cameras refuse to make it good audio Possible When in the field and not a studio
Hi! I was between purchasing the Q2n and the H4n, but would rather do the latter if I am able to plug it into my canon rebel. What would I need to do so? I won’t need to monitor the levels so don’t know if I would need a splitter, but read a response below that said I would still need an attenuator for this. Thanks!
Hello, The H6 can output audio via a 3.5mm stereo jack into the Nikon D800. You can also use the Zoom HS-1 hot shoe adapter to place the H6 on your camera.
Hi there I have a zoom h2 handy microphone and I want to connect to my DSLR camera which is canon rebel ts1. Which is the cable I need to from the microphone to my camera? And will the audio be synchronized with my video automatically? Please let me know I cannot find this info anywhere.
The sound on the SD card should be higher quality because the H5 has preamps and internal circuitry of higher quality than the camera, which was built to capture good images, not good sound. With inferior audio electronics, the camera audio won't be as good as a dedicated recorder/preamp as the H5. A high end video editing program such as Adobe Premiere Pro can sync up the higher quality H5 SD card audio with the lower quality camera audio. Once the better audio is synced with the video, the lower quality camera audio is discarded. That's was the camera audio is often called a reference or scratch audio. But the camera audio should be better than it would be if it wasn't getting its audio from the H5.
Sorry to ask back again (I have the same question), but either the answering people don't understand the question, or the asking people don't understand the answers... The question is as follows: Case 1: I attach the Zoom to my DSLR and record a video by connecting the zoom via line out to the camera. I then review the sound quality of the video recorded on the memory card of the camera. Case 2: I don't connect the Zoom to my DSLR but still record the sound via the Zoom (to later sync it to the video file via Premiere or any video program). Then I review the audio quality on the memory card of the Zoom device. Question is: Is there any difference between the sound quality of the file on memory card of the Zoom device when recorded seperately to the one also recorded with the Zoom but connected to the camera? This should have nothing to do with preamps and interior audi electronics of the camera, because the files to be compared were both recorded with the Zoom and not with the camera audio recording electronics. Thanks!
The audio going from the recorder to the camera DOES go through the camera's audio circuitry and preamps. Both files ARE NOT recorded by the recorder, only the file on the recorder. These recorders do output high quality sound, so it depends on the preamps of your camera. If they are good and it has high quality encoding options, it should be very similar to the quality of the recorder. If however you are asking will the recorder record the same quality whether it is outputting to the camera or not, the answer is YES.
