The Alan Moore-athon trundles along with this weeks entry being 2005's V For Vendetta. Unlike a lot of the other entries in this series this one is generally beloved. With Hugo Weaving as V along with Natalie Portman as Evie it deals with a fascist regime in England, a political uprising, issues of race, gender and sexuality, some fancy karate and of course Alan Moore hates it. Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review.

3:02 I'm glad that didn't change out V's mask for different emotions either. Not only does it place more focus and emphasis on Weaving's vocal performance to display all necessary variations, but the 1990 miniseries version of The Phantom of the Opera already did that with Charles Dance. Lana & Lilly, we know you used Phantom as one of your many backdrops for the film, but best you not make it *too* obvious there, ladies. 😆😉
@anonymouslypseudonymous2060
Plus keeping the mask unchanged throughout the film rather adds to the effect that V is hard to read, as the only face he ever puts forward to the world is the mask with a kind of Mona Lisa-style enigmatic smile that can be seen as either friendly or sinister. He's less of an antihero in the movie than in the comics, but it still works better imo.
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose Год назад
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Oooh, great analysis! And it's only further enhanced by the fact that we can never see his eyes through the mask, and as they say, "Eyes are windows to the soul." Even when he takes his mask off and breaks the mirror Gerard Butler style, no doubt in realization of him becoming the very monster he's been combatting, we don't see his face. It isn't until Evey returns to his house before the 5th that we get any real semblance of the love still lingering within his soul.
@anonymouslypseudonymous2060
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose And that's an even better analysis you've made, lol. Building on that, the moment where he first emerges as the monster of vengeance known as "V" is when he blows up Larkhill and we see him emerging from the fire naked, enraged and victorious all at once, and even in this scene we cannot see his eyes--only shadow and scarred flesh in the shape of a man, the faceless nightmare avenger that haunts Delia's dreams and soon the dreams of every British fascist in the story. As Evey says, what they did to him was monstrous, but in doing so they made a monster. Interesting that they then use rain, the opposite of fire, for his famous "redemption in the rain" scene with Evey later on.
@anonymouslypseudonymous2060
@Latest Obssesion True. I can't remember, does V give the same monologue about "the two faces of Anarchy, destroyer and creator" in the film? Probably not, since they really downplayed the whole anarchism theme, but yeah definitely V is the destroyer, created in hate both by and to annihilate the oppressive government, and Evey is acknowleged as being the creator, who assumes the V mantle after his purpose is served and he is mutually destroyed with the fascists, but with the purpose of healing and building a better world (the last thing she does in the comics is save a sympathetic character from mob violence and take him in, the same way V did for her at the beginning). V started fires to destroy the irredeemably wicked, Evey embraced rain to let the past be forgiven and washed away.

Post *The Matrix* this masked roll was a great fit for Hugo Weaving. At the time, it was still a bit weird for mainstream audiences to see him in non-villainous roles (after his iconic initial performance as Agent Smith). Yes, he was great as Elrond in the LOTR movies, of course, but at the time it was somewhat of an odd casting that unintentionally caused cognitive dissonance for casuals. Many viewers unfamiliar with the Tolkien books kept thinking his character had sinister hidden motivations. And jokes where Elrond did ridiculous things like calling Frodo "Mr. Anderson" were extremely commonplace (especially because both franchises were finishing in 2003). In *V For Vendetta* mainstream audiences of the time were free to interpret Hugo as a heroic character without preconceived biases because his (at the time) villainous face was obscured completely by the mask. Or to draw any conclusion they might about the character. The mask essentially gave Hugo's performance a fresh slate in the pop culture zeitgeist of the time - while ironically obscuring the dramatic instrument contemporary actors rely upon the most. What Mr. Weaving did in this film with both his body language and his voice was nothing short of inspired. I don't think it was lost on the filmmakers, who had largely all worked on *The Matrix* together, what an interesting decision it was to cast someone with an iconically villainous face as a _faceless_ hero.

SO GOOD. gotta cook it on the lowest possible heat though, maybe 200F

As a Phantom of the Opera fan, I feel it is my civic duty to add in how revered this movie is to our fandom. The Phans are a large reason I even got to watching it in the first place, and as a then 15-year-old girl with a burgeoning Phantom obsession, imagine my gleeful surprise at just how much V had in common with it (outside the obvious). So much so, that I even wrote a list to keep track! And it seemed to come at an appropriate time too, since V was released just less than year after the Joel Schumacher ALW Phantom adaptation, which still remains a pretty hot topic of debate for our phandom, and interestingly enough, they were both distributed by Warner Brothers. Anyway, because of such strong connections, connections I've since learned were completely intentional by the filmmakers according to IMDB Trivia, one of the best relics of old RU-vid you can find is the adorably animated Phantom & V series by ZShadow, which is pretty much an encapsulation of 2000's pop culture. I'm talking episodes set in Harry Potter, Spiderman, Twilight, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. And naturally, thanks in large part to the lead actors involved, we've got episodes for 300, LOTR, Matrix, & Transformers. I've been re-visiting them recently and to be perfectly honest, they still hold up. 😉🌹 Having recently fallen back in love with this movie (thanks to The Matrix Resurrections sharing too-close-but-significantly-better-written relations to Love Never Dies, the infamous fix-it Phantom sequel nobody asked for), I actually dressed as up V for Halloween this year, and even made a YT video of me performing his alliteration monologue on my channel. ☺ Edit: Okay, I just got to the theories surrounding V's identity and at 12:17 I heard "Evey thinks it might be her father." WAY TO ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE GUYS LOL XD. Alan Moore probably debunked that one saying "What story do you guys think I'm telling here? Phantom of the Opera? Leave that one to the Wachowskis mate!" 😆 Edit #2: I should also mention: There's a 1987 animated Phantom where Erik's wearing what is essentially a Guy Fawkes mask so...yeah. 😏

The real question is who's more morally ambiguous, V or Erik? Either that or who win in a fight lol.

@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Hmm, hard to say, as they're both complex characters that can fall into the anti-hero/anti-villain mold and yet so many of us love them anyway. 🥰 Lol, watch the Phantom/V series and they do actually fight on more than one occasion, with different winners depending on the universe they're in. My personal favorite episode is Phantom & V vs. The Matrix, where Erik defeats Neo with the power of his MOTN high note and then fights sentinels using his Punjab lasso. There's also the hilarious Phantom & V vs. Phangirls episode, where the most unrealistic thing about it to me is the creator thinking Phangirls don't know who V is. 😆

Speaking as someone who really likes this film, and as someone who at a later point read the graphic novel, I don't personally feel that the film is ruined for me. I rather just view them as separate but intertwined, with their own merits and detractions. That being said, it was VERY clear to me what Alan Moore responded so negatively to after having read the graphic novel! The thing that is most often pointed to is the seeping in of Bush-era politics into the theme of the movie, but the thing I noticed much more clearly was the character of V being portrayed in a WAYYY more heroic light than his graphic counterpart. V in the movie can be argued as antihero, or hero with many negative moral qualities, but there is no comparing to V in the books, who Moore very clearly intended to NOT be a heroic character, or even a good person when it comes down to it.
@Makkufurai
@Makkufurai Год назад
Admittedly I haven't read the novel in some years, but out of what I remember I feel that Moore intended V to be simply a product of his lust for revenge, and the fucked up society allows for and enhances his justifications for his actions (kind of similar to Patrick Bateman interestingly), while at the same time falsely making him come off as heroic.

Blue Harvest was actually the working title for Return of the Jedi, not the original Star Wars. In that clip you use, you even see "R. Marquand" on the film slate, as the director. I'm sure the feelings of genuine momentum come largely from the fact that adapting V had always been in the cards for the Wachowskis, with them wanting to do it even before they made The Matrix. So even with the multiple changes made, you can tell there's a real heart and respect for the source material.

@anonymouslypseudonymous2060
@@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose Yeah honestly most of the stories Alan Moore writes are overall fantastic, but almost always have some really weird subplots with odd psycho-sexual elements crammed in randomly. And sure enough, almost all of the adaptions of his stories cut that stuff out. 💀Maybe that's the real reason why he hates all adaptions of his work so much... On the other hand, though, I definitely found the book Susan to be a much more compelling character than the film Sutler. Sutler is a rather two-dimensional Big Brother/British Hitler stand-in (his name is even edited to look and sound more like Hitler's), whereas Susan was a total freak, but was more interesting for it because his freakishness was fascinating as a character study and as a commentary on the nonsensical power structure of fascist dictatorships.
