V-Ray | Create ATMOSPHERIC PLANETS using simple shaders

In this video we will build a photorealistic planet earth shader. For this we will first set up a detailled base surface with displaced mountains and city lights which only appear in the dark areas of our planet. Additionally we will add a layer of clouds which cast realistic shadows on our surface. Finally, in order to blend everything nicely together, we will be creating a simple atmosphere shader.
We will discover how to use simple Falloffs to automate various parts of our shader and adapt to our overall scene lighting. Using those techniques you can easily setup similar planets by yourself or create variations.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use identical techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3. A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.

Your videos always remind me of a magician explaining a magic trick. At first you just see the result and think "wow, that must be super complicated" - but you explain it so simply and efficiently that at the end you think "ok, it's actually not that hard." - So compliments, you manage with your tutorials to break down things that seem so difficult so that one understands the principle quickly 🙂

As always.. a king in facilitating learning.. the idea is always difficult in my opinion, but after watching the video, I feel the ease of work because of your easy and simple method .. ِali from lebanon I don’t know if you knew me from my constant comments 😅😜

great video as always! I used a very similar approach, but your VrayLightMtl technique for the atmosphere is quite interesting. Maybe you can add an orange tone to the color gradient, for the transition zone between day and night atmosphere.

Nice looking earth ❤ . I tried using fallof with light and shadow in the past it gave unsatisfying results. Vray may have fixed it i think
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
Basically you can only have 1 light, if more than 1 light mixes you will start to get weird results. It works good in this case though as there is only 1 sun...

Love your tutorials, there is always something awesome to learn! what type of light did you use in this scene? im using a V-ray Sun but the shadows are too straight when i apply the multply fall off keep up with this content! it is awesome!
@JonasNoell

Hi I think it was just a standard vray light if I remember correctly

Do you maybe know how to find something similar to your fallout node in Arnold, Maya?

I was doing each render separately say earth cloud and atmosphere, but cloud and earth are not working well to composite in Photoshop. Clouds over the layer are not working as well as they are rendered in a 3Dsmax atmosphere. Can you help

Yeah it kind of works, you may get some issues in the render elements though where it is not correctly represented.

Using Maya, trying to translate in my head as I'm watching this... It would be helpful (at least to me, don't know about everyone else) if you would use the node-based interface (not sure what they call it in Max).
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
I use nodebased wherever it makes sense (as for example in the end of the tutorial when the shading network gets a bit more complicated). To just connect a texturemap into a slot or change a glossiness value I don't think it justifies covering the whole view with an empty node graph...

Watch out for 'Multiply color by opacity' under 'Light material' - only works in CPU mode, not GPU (greyed out). Had me stumped.

Yeah even taking the standard sun would feel like the logical option, in this case it would have too many downsides. It’s not intended for this purpose.
