In this video you will learn how to build a realistic Shoreline Effect Shader using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6. For this we will stick with a fully Procedural Workflow in order to maintain full Flexibility and Adjustability. This setup builds up on my Procedural Ocean shader tutorial and enhances the result. We will first break down all the components of the shader and then build a believable wet sand effect. We will also create a natural looking transition on the contact line between the water and the sand. All of this will help to blend the different parts together and the techniques can also easily be transferred to other usecases.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use similar techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3 using the same or a slightly modified workflow.
A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.

Very cool addition to the ocean tutorial! I really like watching your tutorials and see things I have been doing and then being shown something on top of that I haven't even thought could work. Thanks!

The workflow can be transferred to many different kind of shaders, I just demonstrated it in this context but you can use similar techniques for many other effects :-)

Love the use of textures in the radius to make it less even. This technique could easily be used to transition any two materials.
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
Yeah, I use these kind of techniques all the time. Also can be used with a distance Texture in some cases :-)

Thanks for the wonderful tutorials! Can you make a tutorial about the Bioluminescent beaches(glowing water) at night?
@JonasNoell

I think for this effect it's probably better to simulate something. You could probably fake something with textures though...

Great work and attention to detail , can I use vray for rhino and make these making renders I don’t find some 3dsmax setting options in rhino (but even rhino is a very powerful 3D software and supports grasshopper etc.) seeing your tutorials I and thinking of shifting from rhino to 3dsmax ,what your opinion ?
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
I guess depends why you chose Rhino in the first place. So I guess you have a lots of NURBS models/scenes? If that's the case I guess you won't have much fun with 3ds Max :)

Hi Jonas, you say your most preferred way of blending two materials together is the V-ray Blend Material. Is there any other way to blend two or more materials? 🤔As always, a great tutorial!
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
Well, you could just do it all in one shader by blending and masking different for diffuse, normal, glossiness, etc. The BlendMaterial is easier as it treats them as separate materials and you can keep everything neatly separated. However doing it all in one shader also has benefits, for example it normally renders a lot faster than splitting it up through a BlendMtl.

@JonasNoell

Need to check out the features first, the release was super low key I didn’t even know there had been an update 😀 Lots of detail improvements but nothing really game changing from my feeling so far…

I use the same techniques. The only different is i use vray distancetex instead of vraydirt. Alot of peaple will find it handy and enrich the whole render .
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell Год назад
Yeah, also possible. I prefer the vray dirt as it is more stable, the distancetex tends to sometimes crash while during the IPR and doing adjustments at least on my machine.

@@JonasNoell i checked all comments i didnt find any answer or qustion regarding animated waves , to shore (just elobarating my qustion) using this method? can you please answer?
@JonasNoell
@JonasNoell 9 месяцев назад
@@phanigurram Oh it was probably in my other ocean shading video. You can animate it and it will work as it follows procedural rules. However if your focus is on animation then you will probably get better and more believable results using simulation based methods. This here is a shading trick which is very easy to setup and fast to render but it probably will have limited convincability in animation.
