You're totally wrong!!!!! Now what I baited your attention:😛 If you haven't already Bjørn, you can check out Dala's Battery-Emulator project. It supports many EV packs for home energy storage now, and many inverters. The genius part is that is utilizes the batteries "as-is" so that you don't need to open them. Just hang them on the wall, like you suggested in this video. 🙂

Apparently the 28kwh bearings fail due to electrical grounding flowing through the bearings. They did not fit any brushes to ground the motor shaft. Not sure if this is an issue on the 38kwh which we have, or the kona. Love these workshop videos. Thanks Bjorn and Valdemar

Still not really "approved" so it can be installed without being an electrical engineer. As an electrical engineer (which Dala is) you can sign your own paperwork. 😅 It could be somewhat doable if you are not connected to the grid though as there can be less requirements for an installation. If you are in a country where nobody cares though...

I use a Vw id3 62 kWh to my house with a stand alone Orion BMS and a Solax 15kw inverter. It has been working perfectly for over two years now and saved me a lot of money. Charging cheap and selling expensive, peak shaving etc and u can also run it fully off grid! This was before Dalas battery emulator, and if I had to do it again I had definitely walked the Dala way. I have some videos on my channel when I was building everything. Let me know if you want to know more, you pass my by every time you make an 1000km test ☕️

I did a repair of my motor on my ioniq 28kwh (130.000km on the odo) about a year ago. Took down the motor myself and then i had a auto repair shop do the work of replacing the two bearings in the drive unit. Total cost was about 400 euro. I hope people does not fall for any repair shop that say they have to change the whole motor for 10.000 euro.

I think you're right, blinking light on the Ioniq is for 12V battery care. Mobis is a brand of Hyundai / Kia / Genesis and makes their parts and service equipment.

Konas tend to have issues with the intermediate gear, the one between motor and differential. A friend of mine had that issue, sounded a lot like that Kona in the video. I was told that the Hyundai workshop installed the shaft backwards (so the gear rotates the other way around and the noise went away.

Mobis is a subsidiary of Hyundai that makes most of the parts for Huyndai/Kia/Genesis (electronics to some of their chassis) My e-Soul is being brought in to the shop next monday for the reduction gear and/or engine replacement under warranty because of the horrific noise (the whole thing costs around 4500€ before taxes)

I'm also interested to see how the Zoe repair goes. Usually the rectifier inside the Chameleon onboard charger goes kaput, and good electrician could change it without replacing the entire charger unit, but nowadays there are maybe many second hand units available

You don't need cooling for a house. Car needs 8 to 30KW power all the time. House will need 5KW at most 99% of the time... Less then 1KW in most cases...

There is one guy who did a interface for a Leaf Batterie and it's open source I think. For 11kW charging it should not heat up too much

The motor in the ioniq probably has destroyed bearings due to electro erosive damage as it does not have a grounded rotor. This is a known problem with the first generation Ioniq.

If you mount the battery on the wall you need to find a way to let the air out of the cooling channels. That is not the problem if it lays flat

Look for Victron inverters like Multiplus or Quattro. For a three phase system you could use three of them in parallel.

My 2019 Kona had the motor changed because it made a “knocking” noise. It cost me nothing because it was under warranty.

Kona sounds like a gearbox issue. I had similar sounding (rare) problem in my Model Y.

I would say that active cooling is not needed for a battery that's used as energy storage. Tesla power wall etc does not have it. The power output and charging speed of the battery is not very high at all compared to when it's used in a car and the battery is not really heated up much

I pulled a Tesla Powerwall apart and it has active liquid cooling with valves, pumps and a radiator.

@@momatedise I used the battery cells in a Polaris 4x4 to replace the lead acid battery. Initially I installed the liquid cooling but the battery never got hot or even warm. So I removed it at the end, so you are 1/2 right. Powerwall 1 had 2 Model S modules. Powerwall2 had the bigger 21700 cells in a 12s??p confuguration.

Don't think it's needed strictly for cooling, more likely heating up in winter or just spreading the heat evenly so that all cells are similar temperature.@@moestrei

Is the 'grounding' carbon fibre brush not functioning? If so, the grounding goes through the bearings causing micro welding and early breakage.

Dalathegreat has the solution to connect an EV battery to the inverter. However it requires some tech skills. I have just done it with a Nissan Leaf 40kWh battery. It does NOT require any cooling.

I have a similar sound, but higher of volume in a 24Kw/h Nissan Leaf, 2nd generation. I think it must to be the bearings of the rotor. I don't know if it's interesting to repair it or delete it, the car has 10 years old and 145.000Km. Is a Tekna. Thanks Bjorn for show us all this interesting things.

My problem with this failure is that hyundai/kia know about this very well, also for the cooling issue but they don't care. At least they try to fix the cooling one but abandon the bearing issue is furiating.

Kona and Niro have VESS vehicle engine simulated sound that on my Niro outputs angelic noise at low speed for alerting pedestrians. There is a switch that can turn off VESS or unplug if it's preventing you from hearing other noises.

I think it is a lot cheaper and less effort to just buy 300Ah LFP cells (less than 100€ each) and add an inverter (for instance Victron Multiplus) to get an ESS system which is charging the batteries when the price is low.

But the 35 kWh Mazda MX-30 battery only costs €440. Can you get 35 kWh with LFP batteries for that price? According to my calculations, you only get max 5 kWh for €440.

EV-Batteries are a lot cheaper. And rumors say, they even are of better quality, because of automitive standards and requirements ...... Only depends on the condition of this specific battery. If it is in good shape, it's a nobrainer.

@@bjornnyland If you can get a 35kWh battery for just 440€ then it’s of course a good deal. But only if you can use it more or less without disassembling and reconfiguring the unit. When you have to disassemble it, rewire everything and add your own BMS then it quickly turns into a lot of effort. You also have to look at the overall system cost and effort and how easy it is to integrate it with your local energy pricing system (that it is charging automatically when the prices are low) If you buy new cells then 30kWh would cost around 2500€ and maybe around 1000€ for case and BMS fuses etc.

LFP battery is not going to burn immediately like NMC during a thermal run away, but LFP emits up to 250 liters of flammable/explosive gas per every kWh of battery and 50% of this gas is hydrogen. I think you need 5% mix with the air to reach explosive level. So I'd say using LFP in your house you need a good ventilation to the outside, with NMC you need a good fire box.

How about a video about upgrading the gear shifter to PRNDBC? I believe Peugeot and Cirtoën only have PRND, while Mitsubishi have B and C a well. 10:25 - That looks a bit sketch, especially with the words "it saves us some time to test"... Considering the area is not closed off from even outsiders potentially entering the shop. I'll guess the local OSHA ppl wouldn't be too happy with that...
