I know this is an older video. Excellent stuff. If you're still monitoring comments, you can uograde your oil catch with a clothes washer pan, or water heater pan. Inexpensive, more room, and the option to catch the (waste) water via the incorporated drain.
I love my weed sprayer shower! I got mine from Amazon and haven't put the kitchen sprayer on because I get a good enough spray already. This is truly one of the best ideas ever! Thank you Brian 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Your videos are awesome...I'm planning my freedom and living on the road.....My start date is 8 months away so i'm watching videos and prepping now. I have been doing some shorter trips 1 to 4 weeks and i'm getting it down. I usually camp in boondocking on state and Federal land. Can't wait to be free.
I just made one of those presser sprayer showers yesterday due to your earlier vid. I'm going to Colorado for a month and will try it out. I'm gonna try adding a couple of containers of jetboil water to warm it all up.
Toilets: It seems very wasteful (pun : ) to use a whole huge, black bag for each use. Some use sawdust type materials as layers between uses, you could also tie off or twist tie between sections. Diaper Genies use the same method of twisting the bag between diapers.
Or cheap cat litter and add baking soda. Pour it right on top, then use it again. 'Course you don't have it to store your propane in then, but can still use it as a stool. They also sell composting material guaranteed no smell but I don't know the cost.
No cat litter for me, tried it once and once only. my van smelled like cat litter box and reminded me of a crazy ex girlfriend with 4 cats. I literally ran to the nearest waste dumpster and bailed the litter, opened all the doors and blasted the van with freebreze. I drove away laughing and talking to myself, saying "this is my van" not a cat litter box. l even apologised to my van !!! no dice, the best way is Brian's way !🙀💩
Thanx again Brian...I've been following you for a while now. Like your sideburns. and I'm still looking for the video where you made your shower head...take care and stay strong~
Brian, the weed sprayer idea is so inventive!! It's amazing how you've helped so many people with this issue! Also, I like how you put the bag over the seat of the toilet...another great idea!!
I own one of those shower tents and they are good I have mine set in the yard and it can handle the weather. IF you have a kid that waits for the bus and you want them to have a dry spot to chill I strongly suggest getting them one of these so they can wait out a monsoon. I use kitty litter bottles painted black for water heating. I set it in a spot place some reflectors around the bottle and let her rip the water is 120 degrees by noon I can get it hotter but 120 is just right for my dish water. I pour the solar heated water in my sink then I cover it and let the heat work on my dishes. Shot of bleach and it is the safest way to do your dishes. I could use the water for shower or for clothes but I have all that on the grid I just wanted to see if this is a potential solution and it is.
I want to make one of those pump showers. I don't really go camping or RVing. However, I want one for emergencies. I'm in Eastern Mass and sometimes we can get a good hurricane or blizzard and it can knock out power for a number of days. As he said, heating up water on the stove (I have a gas stove) and pouring it in the sprayer tank with cooler water and bring it into the tub and have a decent enough shower when the power wont let the furnace or boilers run. I live in a big apartment building and sometimes we are without hot water for one reason or another. If I made one of these, I would not be inconvenienced very much when the SHTF around here. Another advantage is I could take a shower late at night without running the water in the tub and making noise other tenants could hear with the water rushing through the pipes. I can hear when others use the water in the bathroom. I could just fill it from the kitchen sink and bring it into the tub and take a quiet shower when I want to. I can't wait to make one. :-)
Great video as always! I use the bucket method. To keep the smell down, I use Dry cold ashes from campfire rings. Underneath and above the waste. If I am at a place for more than one day, I can get multiable uses out of one bag. It's no big deal I usually clean out the campfire ring before having a fire anyway.
I'd have to keep some contractor grade bags on hand for those times when I eat something with higher spice notes. That sets off a level 1 code black event. My produce would "reshape" one of those 1.05 mil bags. I usually make a shrill whooping sound to alert the others in the vicinity. My cat looks at me with pity in her eyes.
I'm also thinking of getting a portable shower and wondering if you would let me get the Coleman 5 gal bag. I would be willing to pay shipping. great video by the way.
Because I do a lot of training out in the desert, I use this same system. I found that you can buy biodegradable trash bags on Amazon. I just bury the used bags, and let nature run its course over time. No harm to the environment. Great video thanks
Those are great solutions! I've primitive camped all my long life, but always am very particular about hygiene. Cleanliness. That's the ticket. We're going tent camping soon with our daughter and son in law, I'll make one of those showers first! What a great idea, thanks AdVaMa (I like to shorten names:))!
Love the camper van. I am in the process of turning my little Nissan 200 NV Cargo Van into a tiny camper for my cross country journey for my 50th birthday this yr. :)
Best shower setup ever! Thank you! I line my Porta Potti, seat and all, with scented bags for solid waste - very clean and easy to dispose of. Having the Porta Potti is nice because in addition to using it as intended for liquid waste (I clean inside the bowl with a hydrogen peroxide/water spray afterwards instead of doing a normal water flush), I can also use it with a hand-held travel bidet to stay fresh in between showers.
People crack me up, who cares about how he disposes of his solid waste!? How many families do you know with newborns who throw hundreds of shitty diapers in land fills every week? Come on know, really!?
We had to winterize in New Mexico and Utah last December, January and used the same methods. Haha you haven't lived on the road until you piss in a jug! I'm with you on solar showers, they suck. Plus if you pour water in that's too warm it can melt the bag. I accidentally did that once living in a dry cabin for a year. Wish I knew about your sprayer setup back then!
You have a great video love the guitar bits, your film sounded like yo where a hermit, with no social contact, you didn't mention other people in a daily routine, who is willlis is that american slang for mate/buddy ? its 8.30 am here in Bulgaria , god it must be the middle of the night in USA now !! Can't you sleep ?
Some ideas for a more eco-friendly composting toilet setup... How about using biodegradable/compostable trash bags, and using composting material (sawdust, coconut coir, etc.) to cover the "product" after each use? This way, you can get more uses per bag (even with combined dry/wet waste), and when you do finally toss it into dumpsters, you'll know that once it reaches the landfill, it will continue to compost, leaving no toxic plastic behind. Biodegradable/compostable trash bags: www.ifyoucare.com/product/certified-compostable-trash-bags Coconut coir: www.planetnatural.com/product/procoir-coconut-coir-fiber/
For the past month, been watching all the rv'ers and vanners (I have a mature Caravan that I want to transform), there have been so many videos with poor acoustics etc., and for a beginner, it's hard to take in all the info. What I liked about your video is that you show what you do for showers etc. and also tell about the negative experiences, like that Coleman bag shower - keeps people from blowing their $$ on junky lame products. Good stuff,
great video...... I was just thinking about using compostable bin bags instead which you could bury in the ground if you are out in the wilderness for a couple of days. I know that they are a little bit more expensive but it might be worth to consider. looking forward to your next video mate
Hello AdventureVanMan I see you keep your propane tank in the bucket INSIDE the van. Do you use it inside as well (cooking, heating)? I've been persuaded to not use or keep any propane tank inside my popup trailer, but I want to hear about your experience.
Experience doesn't count. Some people will be lucky while others wont. I suggest reading gas company safety tips and OSHA's regulations. Flash fires, explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning/death (cooking or heater related)...just to give you an idea. And you are right. The tank must always remain outside, except special cabinets vented only to the outdoors like RVs have. Stay safe and enjoy your travels!
As I watch these van dwelling videos, I cringe to think of anyone pooping in a plastic bag then throwing it into a garbage bin. My father was a plumber and I think he would have something to say about this as would any plumber that understands city sewage systems or septic systems in the country. Has anyone taken the time to find out if this is even LEGAL? Kudos to your videos, they are great. Im just concerned about this particular method. I have a lot of respect for those that have a composting system. I know they are pricey but Ive seen some that are homemade with that same "portable loo" in this video.
it is kind of like dog bags, the city here even provides them in parcs and certain bike-walk paths and have a garbage container with them that the city empties into their huge ones so i dont really see a difference well here in canada s capital at least
nh libra well, your cringe factor would be on overload: consider nursing homes, rehab centers, home situations, people use depends, disposable diapers, pull ups, they go in the dumpsters. Nursing homes have massive dumpsters. So, how is it illegal?
Good set up, have deen doing that process for years now when I camp out. It seems like you could find a heater eliment run off a battery to insert in the sprayer to warm the water. I made a 1 1/2" aluminium tubing fram that just hooks together, then slide the privacy tent over and stake to ground. Makes it strong enough for wind and hanging wet towels inside. Use a plastic pallet as a floor, water runs thru keeps your feet easier to dry and less contamination from traking in and out.
looking forward to you getting back on the road and escaping this weird place.... no offense but it looks pretty boring and lacks variety .... when u leaving?
I like that tent- I bought a double one from same company but the sucker was so heavy n big I brought it back. Haven't been able to find double pop up here in US like in Australia
Too many other options (IMHO). But in "my Van Life" so to speak I'm able to have access to alot more then the dwellers living in the sticks & deserts and such lol. Great video, have an awesome holiday and be safe!! cheers!
Brian at pro bass shop store or other outdoor stores they have this plastic toilet seat that fits on that 5 gallon container that u have just put one of those small wal mart bags u get as u check out in the store. Then when your done shiting throw the bag in the outside garbage can.
Please use caution when disposing of waste. The laws vary from place to place. You may be required to go to a hazardous waste site. Remember, what you throw away someone else must process. Respect eachother and be a good steward of our planet.
I got that same shower kit because I saw you do it in your previous video. I have not had to use it yet as I have had been staying with friends or had access to bathroom, but I'm glad I have it.
We used to shower right in our van with a pvc pan used under a typical residential water heater. It's lots big to stand in and catches all of the water for a typical shower.. ours had a drain on the side and we used to drag the pan to the door and just let it drain out..Spot on about the solar shower bag ..way too time consuming to deal with.
Really good run though on how you shower/bathroom use. I'm sure it will help the newer guys/gals that have these kinds of questions. Hope you have a great 4th.
Brilliant video Brian! We have the same privacy tent which not only is great for the uses you show in the video, but it also works great as a changing room for wet clothes, swimsuits, etc.
This is a great set-up. Only recommendation I have s to use compostable trash bags on the toilet. That way you can take them out of the bucket and burry them, instead of having to find a trash bin. Be careful not to buy the 'recycled' trash bags because they are still plastic; make sure you have the ones that compost.
Thanks Brian. I always enjoy watching & learning from your videos. Bob Well is a fav. also. I agree with Denise..I would do a layer type of tying. So as not to be as wasteful. Take care & stay strong. Do you make/sell CD's of your flute playing?
Thank you for demonstrating your showering dispenser again! I went to Home Depot this morning and got the supplies, put it together, and took a shower (at home in order to test it) and it worked great! Since I found 1.5 gallons to be sufficient, your recommendation of a 2-gallon capacity is perfect in order to allow some extra water if necessary! I am really looking forward to being able to go back to Quartzsite, AZ and spend more than just one night this time boondocking in the desert because I will be able to shower (I am only tolerating things without a daily shower or swim)! Next, I plan to buy an enclosure. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
If you drilled and tapped the top of the sprayer bottle(under the neck) and installed a threaded Schrader valve with epoxy, you could pressurize without pumping with a 12v tire inflator/compressor. You could also add a regulator so you could leave the air pump running or use an air tank without fear of over pressurizing the weed sprayer bottle.
+dilbot macguillacutty If you used the propane tank as the storage vessel for the water, you could toss it in or near the campfire before pressurizing.
+The shower idea is excellent- thanks for sharing. For my toilet outback, I use a bucket with the bottom cut out- I dig a small 6-8 in diameter and 6-8 inch deep hole and set the bucket over it as my toilet. then just cover it with dirt when I leave camp.
Good demo! Your shower and toilet methods are exactly the ones I already decided to use. I like the sprayer head modification...awesome idea!!! I remember you earlier video on how to make one. I really like you van. I am going to pattern mine after yours. Looking forward to your upcoming trip! Stay safe!
great explaining:) set up works super Great 4 me 2, i have at the ready 2 additional spray containers , for just in case purposes, thanks so much for posting, be safe... ajohnson
Great video as usual Brian! I've seen your shower set up previously and it's the way to go. Looking forward to more of your videos with cooking segments. I've used your recipe ideas and they're great! Thanks for sharing!
