What a concept great musicians getting on stage and playing great music without a bunch of frills and nonsense. I'm 58 now and I wonder everyday how music has become so utterly lame these days. Thank you Van Halen and RIP to the greatest rock guitar player off all time. Miss you Eddie
Im 64 ,been listening to rock my whole life,,,now my grandsons understsnd why i listen to this,,,,they pull in,,,,this is whst i,,m hearing,,,,this is way cool,,,,great years
Michael Anthony just blows me away!! To have those bass skills and complimenting backing vocals is a Gift to anyone in any band!! High high...Shoot High baby!!

After my parents learned of this show downtown being advertised on radio that day, they came and got me out of school. In 1991, I was in the First Grade, and this was my 1st concert..You bet I’m Grateful.
Everyone says that about their generation and their music. As an 80s kid, this stuff was great, but I still would have loved to see Hendrix, the Grateful Dead and some of those bands in their heyday.
i was thinking the same thing!!! he's so happy, excited and full of life... you could just tell that this was at his absolute peak. he was pure gold on that stage... and with al, mike and sammy... you just get this feeling like this is EXACTLY where they wanted to be.
Maybe he looked so happy because he was a new Daddy....Wolfie would've been a few months old and Ed was one proud Pop....He and Val were gettin along and lovin their new roles as parents.....
I'm sure Eddie didn't think he would make it to 65 at one point in his life. It sucks because your body breaks down but if you make it, that is awesome!
All my adult life I worked, no real health problems. Now my feet are fucked up, arthritis is creeping in, need a knee replacement. What the hell? I don't want this shit, This isn't who I am! Where did my 30-something self go? Where did 30 years go?! Guess I have to fix what I can to feel better, change the attitude. Gotta say, Eddy embraced life & got so much more from it than most of us do.
The best shit on the fucking planet, seen them so many times, and this is one of the best shows ever, eat your heart out David loser Roth, Sammy brought the heart and soul out of vanhalen. We love and miss you eddie.god speed brother.
I Carl Browning "WAS" there that day in Dallas Texas. 🇺🇸✌🏻❤🎶🎸👊🏻🇨🇱 Thank You, Eddie Van Halen, for decades of great Rock & Roll❗ I was 20 years old in 1991 right in the heart of Dallas Texas my HOME town. The show only lasted give or take an hour and the show was shut down by the cops. I waited ALL day to see this concert. I WAS front row but could NOT handle being pushed against the barricades. If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing. It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him. Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻 The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.
this is probably the best damn concert ever filmed....such energy, chemisty, professionalism, exuberance.......all you rock n rollers out there, this is how it is done!!
I was there on that day,i called in work to see them, and it was worth it,,Sammy and Eddie promised a free show and they came through with flying colors
@@Cenot4ph In a full name, the “van” is (mostly) written in lowercase e.g. Edward van Halen. However, when only the surname is referred, the van becomes capitalized e.g. Van Halen. There is also some stuff involved with if someone is of a family of importance (nobility) if capitals are used or not...
This gig is one of those we should show our kids when we want to explain rock and roll to them: get up on a stage, no fancy lights, and simply kiss ass....what a great vibe this has....
Eddie Van Halen Never showed a bad emotion. He loved his Fans and He lived the music and playing with his brother!!! That guy was a once in a lifetime person!!!! RIP EDDIE!!!
@@michaelwilson7924 Yep, 100% the beginning of the end, rock turned into sludgy grunge mess, and hip hop and crap starting becoming mainstream, then boy bands and bubblegum pop like britney. The state of music today is pathetic but it all started in the early 90's.
You can see the sound system that they're using and by 1991 modern recording technology was pretty good so it's no wonder this should sound near their studio recording, Eddie did use cranked up amp's on the studio too in order top get the same live sound on the records !?
RU-vid has done a great job with all the free music, I am blown away all the time on RU-vid and FREE. People bash Sammy as a weak link, but I love Sammy and he can play guitar too. Without Sammy Van Halen would not have been as successful. Difficult to find a singer that meshes, most groups suffer post original singer.
At just over one minute in I’m in love with Eddie AGAIN. Playing the Poundcake opening with a beard and long hair. I need a minute. Or two. Or thirty. Come back, Eddie, please. 💔
Just saw Sammy, Michael, Santriani in Indianapolis Friday and it was an amazing walk down memory lane. Satriani was amazing and was not attempting to be Eddie but really paid tribute to his legacy. Will always miss Eddie and Alex and was lucky to have seen them multiple times…equally thankful for the moment with Sammy and Michael. We are not on this earth forever everyone. If you love Van Halen you owe it to yourself to spend this two and a half hours celebrating this musicians and all they brought to our lives.
I love how Sammy is SO positive! He very often says things like "oh everything's alright, huh," and commenting how real and amazing everything is in the very moment! Constantly celebrating music, his fans, his band, the moment, and life itself! (Also being generous and compassionate towards his fans.) and OF COURSE I love my main hero Eddie Van Halen! Amazingly positive person as well! And the most innovative, revolutionary, and influential guitarist who ever lived (in so many ways!) Plus this is amazing footage, and the sound quality is AMAZING; for the time especially! I"m so thank full to be able to take this in. The band plays AMAZINGLY light, and with such great enthusiastic energy! Simply amazing! ! ! ! What a great way to spend Christmas!
what a fantastic life these guys have had , I'm sure they've had their ups and downs like everyone else except for just a little bit different level , Ed was such a genius and so much a part of life itself , I mean my life anyway, it still doesn't seem real , will the pain stop , maybe...rest well Ed
Awesome show for sure, we were about mid way back on the right side of the stage. Traffic was insane leaving. I personally liked seeing them on the 1984 tour better.
Great drummer and a sweet guy too ! He stopped and took time out for me to get a picture with him in 91 at Toronto International Airport. I'll never forget that
31 years ago, I was there and started off being near the front row. I skipped work and went from Arlington to Dallas that morning and waited ALL DAY for this show. What was cool is Sammy actually played his guitar. Then under an hour and half the Dallas Police Department shut'em down. Before that take note of how the crowd was surging forward, I ended going back by the sound scaffolding to keep from being crushed. Then after that drunk on the light pole fell off on to his head. The show done!!! The ambulance had to part the street like the Red Sea. Ethier way, it was something I WON'T forget. Eddie will be missed, though his musicianship will live on! TEXAS STYLE 🤙🏻🎶 🎤 🎸 🎹 🥁
Awesome promise kept by Sammy after losing his voice at the Monsters of Rock show earlier at the Cotton Bowl. We were at the Spaghetti Warehouse front porch. Epic!
Got out of work early to make it down a few hours before show started. Had a great spot under one of those trees standing on a planter box so no one in front of me. One of my favorite concerts ever because of the whole vibe that day. Everyone having fun and enjoying one of the best bands ever!
Especially live. Dave can't carry a tune in a bucket. As a pure singer Sammy is way better then Dave. But I love them all. Nothing better then their first four albums.
This is what Live: Right here, Right now should of sounded like. Truly LIVE. We buy live albums to hear the imperfections and energy from the crowd. This sounds great!! 🤘😏🤘
I was there Dallas West End I was also at the cotton bowl two years before this show when Sammy Hagar loss his voice and said they would come back and give us a free show. So here it is
I bought ticket's as well but Sammy could not hold-up for it. Told us to keep'em and they would be back later. Free concert my ass, what about the $$$ from the show that was canceled?
This is the first I've heard of it happening elsewhere. Well apparently it was just what he did on a regular basis. I paid big time money to a travel agency, "scalper" to see them in Miami. 93 Sam's voice cracked in the first song splits in the second and broke in the third. He walked off the stage mumbling I suck! I suck! I suck! LIVE Into the microphone 😂 So yeah? Sammy!! Where's the Free Show for Miami? Or maybe my $460.00 back.
They were left on VH record Diver Down but that was right before 1984 dropped a Bomb on our heads! I was 18 playing Guitar in a band with long Hair Tight Leather pants mixed with spandex and denim just starting on having the best times of my life !! DLR fan but loved Sammy's solo work 3 Lock Box babe ...
An impromptu concert that came off as a full on production. This is one of the greatest live concert videos ever. Playing in the middle of town amongst the buildings and all the people with a perfect sound.
Of course Hagar would keep a promise...especially in Texas. Sammy walked into my record store (Sound Town) in Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth in April of 1979 in the middle of the day with Gary Pihl (his guitarist) to buy some cassettes. His band was opening for Boston the next night at TCCC. I was alrerady a big fam since I saw him fronting Montrose on their first tur in Oct of 1973 so I knew exactly what he looked like. The 17 year old girls I worked with walked up after I started talking to him and asked Pihl, "Is that really Sammy Hagar?" Gary glanced over at Sammy and the said " I don't know" and SAmmy broke up. Dude was just a really nice guy, hung around for about 10 minutes talking and signing albums and 8 TRACKS. And the next night the band BLEW Boston off the stage...
Musicians nowadays have absolutely insane talent. There'll never be another EVH, but the level of musicianship out there is certainly not lower on average now than it was 30 years ago, although rock music has tragically been ousted from the mainstream.
@@radicalstanza3614 Rock music is 6 feet under but I've seen some extremely talented guitar players, they are all around the world literally thousands of like black belt guitarists exist. As for actual bands that have Van Halen's magic is very rare.

Alex back there working like a FOOL...so hard. He's so great. They played like it was FREE. For everyone, including them. I believe one of the best captured VH concerts ever. Never expected this, as I watched it with my very eyes in person. Whew!!
When it comes to rock, they were old dudes in '91. Led Zeppelin reached greatness when they were 20, sold out every show for 11 years, sold over 300 million records, and moved on to solo projects before they were 30. Van Halen wanted to be like Led Zeppelin but they weren't good enough. Eddie claimed he was better than Jimmy Page but he wasn't good enough and his sound wasn't heavy enough. VH couldn't sell half as many records or attract audiences half as big.
I know man. shit happens quick. I saw the rolling stones when they were around 50's....I was like "those old dudes rock pretty good." smh…..I'm now around that age myself!
I was just on a tour run working for Vince Neil and we were opening for Sammy and the circle and I can tell you Sammy STILL sounds this good if not better now...and he is also a very nice down to earth guy...so is Michael Anthony...serious talent and good guys to boot while I was around them...
I’ve met both Sammy & Mike. Couldn’t agree more. I met Mike’s bass tech Kevin Dugan a few months ago and he couldn’t say enough nice things about Miley and he’s been working for him for 40 years now!
Sure. I hear that there's these mystical great visual + sound examples from back in 1982, 1973, 1969 etc etc too but hey that must be the stuff of myth huh? 'For 1991'??
I was at this event. It was during the week and announced at the last minute in the radio. One of the most amazing concerts ever - the timing, the huge crowd and just Hagar and Van Halen. Wow. What a piece of history. Unforgettable.
Damn, Sammy could sing circles around Dave but Dave was a showman. If you could combine both of them, you’d have the greatest frontman in music history.
@@mystyrjenkins8048 except Gary isn’t sex on legs charisma man Dave, while having maybe 2/3 of Sammy’s pipes. Dave’s music is the best music, Sammy’s clearly the best vocalist (but fr Van Hagar was, outside of the really good stuff like Poundcake and Top of the World, like having Journey but with the world’s greatest guitarist).
@@mystyrjenkins8048 No way 🤣 Gary looks like a skinny dork on stage. Pretty good singer but seriously lacking in the looks and stage presence departments
Glad I found this. I was in college and Van Halen was the music in the background during those great times. Today, I'm thankful for Wolfie VH. Go, see him if he comes to your area. I went to Dublin to see him and in August he will be here in Corpus Christi. He is so talented. Keep on Rocking Peeps!
You can just tell that those guys were in top form here both musically and personally. Effortless perfect, fun, live and real rock n roll. When a band has that type of chemistry it is undeniable.
Bro it's not just you. The man looks and acts the same on stage now with Sammy and the Circle as he did in '83 with DLR and Van Halen. I'll never understand it haha
A little context; 1991 is the year Nirvana became the biggest baddest group ever… Bands like VH had enough of a following to survive, but Nirvana and all the Seattle groups (not to mention the plethora of indie “slacker” stoner type groups to flood the airwaves and stages in a few years) basically cast a shadow so dark over everything else besides hip hop and rap , most never recovered. Having enlightened with this sunny truth, lemme just say, I am now , was then, and am forever a VH enthusiast. R.I.P. - EVH hope your “Judgment Day” was on the sunny side
Well, everyone is young and dumb once.....just depends on level of dumb. I don’t think we were as dumb as today’s youth. At least not as indoctrinated.
Hagar turned into an asshole. He violated the two most important tules of rock: 1. NEVER say a bad thing about a former band mate (especially a band mate that made you rich beyond your wildest dreams). 2. NEVER disrespect your fans, their city, and their brewery. In 2007, a very drunk and obnoxious Hagar amd MA got booed off the stage at the Fox in St. Louis after Hagar's chilish rant about Anhueser Busch decided against brewing his beer idea. When he made fun of AB employees in the audience, we had enough. Hagar deserved an ass-kicking which he later recognized and issued a hollow apology.
I was at this Dallas show. It was at a restaurant / bar area in the West End. It was a free show put on by VH for having to cancel a previously scheduled show in Dallas. They announced the show on the radio mid-morning. It started a few hours later. When I arrived there were thousands of fans already there waiting for the show. They ended early due to safety concerns. Great memories.
The previous show wasn’t cancelled. It was the ‘88 Texxas Jam. I was there. Sammy lost his voice. Did his best but he announced to the crowd that they would come back and do a free show. True to their word!
Teasers played all week prior to the show in mystery clips on Q102. But damn well worth it! We rushed from Fort Worth to no miss this show. Well worth it...won't forget it!

I saw Van Halen with Roth in 1982 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, and it was amazing !I also saw Van Halen 5 times with Sammy, and every show was incredible ! Sammy is a better musician, and has a better vocal range than Roth, but you can't discount either singer in the history of the band.If the Van Halen brothers weren't so hard to get along with, this band would still be kicking everyone's ass !!!Too bad.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate each individual musician here & what they each bring to the table here to make a collective experience. My god, Sammy's vocals live are just W O W hitting those high notes and screaming? How did the man NOT destroy his voice. I'm more of a Van Halen fan, rather than Van Hagar, but that was my loss because they were still awesome, just in a slightly different way, with Sammy.
I agree. That is why this band is timeless. Their immense talent just blended so well together. I appreciate both Van Halen and Van Hagar, though I feel like Sammy allowed the band to develop their music more.
While listening to Q102 one sunny day in 1991, I learned about the free Van Halen concert in the West End. Next thing I know, my sister and I are in the crowd enjoying the music. We were literally almost crushed alive by the force of the crowd. No regrets though, it was an amazing day. Thank you for an amazing day Eddie, I will never forget that wonderful day. RIP
Quique Dillon Yea, it was a crazy day. They announced the event on the radio and I got in the car and headed to the West End. When I got up that day I had no idea I would be at a VH concert. Cops shut the event down, this kind of thing would *never* happen today.
Here's irony ..... I graduated high school in 1990 in Houston, went to Dallas in 1991 and missed this concert by at least 2 weeks. Bad timing. I live about 15 minutes from the west end now ( 75231 ) and will be moving back to Houston in 2 weeks exactly on ....... Halloween........... Never did get to see Van Halen live in my life time... :(
This is simply fuckin awesome, this performance, this whole era of rock music. Love Eddie, Alex, Michael, Sammy and also David. Enjoy every recorded video and audio of these unique guys. Will these great memories last forever and be inspiration for all future generations.
sammy didnt want to be at par with the band, he wants to be the top dog, which only degrades the quality of what makes VH is, years later it came out, dave though came back but was way past his effective antics which what VH was..

This takes me back I was there at the Texxas Jam concert VH headlining but that was the first time ever seeing Metallica awesome. My sister went to the free concert here, oh the memories.
Not sure about the Texxas Jam but I'm positive Sammy's last Solo show at Reunion Arena his voice was cracking and he said he would come back and make it up to us. Then he went over to Van Halen and they came and played this free show. Yes it was an awesome event.

People act like Sammy Hagar ruined Van Halen. No, Sammy saved VH. David Lee Roth was gone out the door and Eddie didn't want him back, at least not for many years to come. And stop fantasizing about who could have been a better replacement for DLR, because Eddie didn't want them either. He wanted Patty Smyth from Scandal, who's hits included Good Bye To You and The Warrior, but Patty Smyth declined the position. And Sammy didn't insist on adding keyboards and synths to the band's sound. That's what Eddie wanted to do, because his first instrument was piano. Eddie wanted to push the band towards a Synth-pop sound, not Sammy. That was partially the cause of the friction between DLR and EVH. So, think about it logically. Eddie wanted synth, keyboard and Patty Smyth. That band was going to completely change it's sound, with or without Sammy Hagar. If anything, Sammy saved the band and gave it at least some Hard Rock credibility. With Sammy, they moved away from Hard Rock and became a Pop-Metal band. Well, guess what? At the time, that was exactly what you wanted, if you were going to make 4 straight number one albums. It's very unrealistic to compare Van Hagar to Van Halen, because the old band and the old sound were simply not options anymore. Stop blaming Sammy for changing the sound of Van Halen. Eddie initiated and orchestrated that change. Sammy came in and he did exactly what Eddie wanted him to do. He rocked out and he made hit records. Unless, you truly believe in your heart, that Van Halen would have sounded better, fronted by Patty Smyth, then stop complaining about Sammy. Just be thankful that Sammy helped VH make four straight number one albums. I can almost guarantee, the Van Patty era albums would have performed much worse on the charts and they would have pissed off a lot more Van Halen fans than Van Hagar did.
Their best selling album ever is the first one. It's also the best one the EVER made. I prefer the wild, young and hungry sound to the middle of the road weak sappy love songs Sammy brought. All the fun left with Dave. As good as Eddie is..his most inspired and inspiring playing is on those first 2 or 3 records.
@@skybluemarshall ... No...I didn't. If I'm not mistaken your point was and I quote "Sammy Hagar saved Van Halen". I disagree. Sammy Hagar help to create Sammy Hagar helped to create Van Hagar which for my money is a totally different band that Van Halen despite the name. More Poppy Less Attitude Less Edgy and trying way too hard to be friendly. In other words Foreigner or Sir Supply with a great guitarist.
@@FramrodLiggins If you understood my point, then why would you bring up anything having to do with David Lee Roth or the old band? Eddie didn't want DLR. He wanted Patty Smyth. He wanted Synth-pop. He wanted exactly everything that you just listed, that you don't like. What YOU wanted or what I wanted Van Halen to be, is completely and totally irrelevant. It was never going to happen. Eddie changed the band, not Sammy. Eddie was headed in a direction that could have been a lot worse than what Van Halen fans actually ended up with. Eddie was shooting for something along the lines of New Wave, keyboard and synth oriented, Pop-Rock with a female lead singer. You disagree with my statement that Sammy saved Van Halen, because you are looking at it from the point of view of a fantasy. The DLR version of Van Halen was totally over, because Eddie wanted it to be over. You can't compare Sammy to something that Eddie no longer wanted. I am looking at Sammy's presence in the band from a more realistic point of view. Eddie wanted his band to sound like Patty Smyth. Think about her and not DLR. Patty was the sound that Eddie was aiming for. And from my realistic point of view, Sammy saved Van Halen from what they might have sounded like, if Eddie had gotten his way. Like many other fans, you are stuck on this fantasy of something that simply wasn't possible. David Lee Roth was like big shot of good old whiskey. Eddie decided that he wanted a white wine spritzer and he refused to go back to whiskey. Sammy came into the picture and he was like a Cadillac Margarita. He was sweet and sappy, but at least he had more kick than a freaking white wine spritzer. Eddie said, "Ehh, close enough" and he went with Sammy's Margarita. It is from this perspective that I say, Sammy saved Van Halen. If anyone was hell bent on totally ruining VH, it was Eddie. If you realistically consider what Eddie was really trying to do, then Sammy saved the band and VH fans should feel lucky that they got Sammy.
@@skybluemarshall Thata a whole bunch of allegory and metaphoric detail. PERHAPS...if you had been more clear in your original post you could have saved youself all of that explanation. Imagine if 10000 people read your post ...how many do you think would reference it to Patty Smythe or synthpop? You made the blanket statement "Sammy saved Van Halen" That statement ccan be interpreted in several ways. To MY ears and taste in Rock...Van Halen with Hagar is not an continuation of Van Halen with Roth...it's a completely different band with a completely different musical, lyrical and visual direction. This speaks to your point that Ed want more pop. It also speaks to mine because to MY ears.. the combination Eddie's synth-pop efforts and Sammy Hagar's "Classic Rock" voice they became... Foreigner with a great guitar player and mediocre "classic rock" songs. There is no fantasy perspective at play here. To ME, they didn't get better when they grew up. I'm an older guy but I STILL don't like great bands that try to grow musically up while still acting like 20 year olds. ...and that is a pretty accurate description of Van Hagar...to ME. Patty Smythe???? Synth-pop????? Hagar didn't save Van Halen He facilitated Van Hagar To ME...those are two different bands. JUMP is a synthpop tune. It's also the band's most popular tune but Sammy never sounds convincing singing it ...at all. It's hard for a 35 year old dude to sing because it really isn't about anything. It's just ridiculously catchy even if you don't like it and the band's performance in the video was so stupid that you either love it or hate it. I think it's fantasy to ever believe that VH fans were going to remain VH fans with Patty Smythe or dude from the Human League singing. They would have been taking it with Patty Smythe and I think they were faking it with Hagar. The buzz left with Roth...and I'm no big fan of Roth's singing but he was hella better than say...Bon Scott or Brian Johnson. Patty Smythe... Who knows about all that?????
Edward and this band were musical athletes - make no mistake this is pure performance perfection - I would argue they’re at a peak here like Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps - just fingers and voices and God given energy and talent!
Absolutely agree. I saw them in Dallas (1993) and they were equally great. Hard to believe that Sammy was 42-43 and the others were late 30’s in this video. Look at the energy and passion they poured into this performance... easily matched (or surpassed) Pearl Jam or any of the other grunge bands that ruled early-90’s radio. These “old fellas” roared. And Sammy’s pre-show interview: I’m all for equality, but the world needs more unapologetic, alpha males singing good times rock.✌️
