So many people have “mastered” the guitar: they learn the skills, the different ways to play, create very technically intricate solo’s, etc. Eddie Van Halen wasn’t just a master of the guitar, he put himself into and through his guitar, and he had FUN! So many people say nobody does, or can, play like Eddie Van Halen, and that’s because Eddie had so much fun putting himself onto and through his guitar. Look at him, he’s always smiling with joy when he plays! Eddie could do all those things with the guitar because he wasn’t trying to be anyone else, he was just being himself. I wish people would quit trying to be Eddie when they’re playing, and just be themselves. I think Van Halen was so very successful because they were all so good at what they did, and they all had alot of swag. Listen to each members parts and I think you’ll hear it. For what it’s worth, I’d really like to see you react to “Mean Streets”.

Great reaction. As good as his lead playing was, his rhythm playing was and is still unrivalled. His swing and groove are things that you can't teach. While listening to van Halen you can't help but smile, that guitar under the vocals has a voice of its own. I'm happy someone recognised that. He is probably the best rhythm player to ever exist. Good job guys.
@Frank-hz1cw

Van Halen had the best rhythm vocals around. Michael Anthony and Eddie Van Halen right along with Alex Van Halen could really belt it out. That’s not to say Diamond David Lee Roth didn’t have the pipes to help kick some ass as well. DLR had that soulful tone to help with those background vocals. Van Halen, hands down was the best all time rock band to come out of Southern California. Rest In Peace Eddie, you will be missed but never ever forgotten.

The riffs you keep talking about...don't forget, this song was ground zero for Van Halen..this song was the first single on the radio, and the first song on the album. When you bought this, it was the first you heard. This was the song that caused you to drop everything and haul ass to your friends house and you're jumping up and down...screaming. OMG DUDE...YOU GOTTA HEAR THIS...OMFG. .Then song 2 comes on, Eruption..and you stand still,jaw dropped,probably crying with goosebumps..because you just heard the 2 most important songs of all time as far, back to back..as changing rock music..nothing sounded like this before this came out... nothing. Guitar sales went up over 1000% by April 78 and there were production shortages. That was the power of Van Halen when they came out..the studio version of Eruption..not the 15 minute watered down live version from Live without a net. Do NOT react to that. It has NOTHING on the 1:20 studio version

For context, when this album first came out no one had heard anything like it before. This was the opening track, so when people first laid the needle on the vinyl and heard this they were blown away. Then the next track, Eruption, completely changed how guitar was played and inspired an entire generation of players. This entire album is historic in that it created a whole new genre that lasted for many years. Eddie Van Halen was a game changer. RIP Sidenote: that's not a piano in the beginning. That's Ed sliding his pick on on the bridge of the guitar. He was always figuring out new ways to get diff sounds from his axe.

@@sonofrobert You can love G n R if you want - I do - and it’s fair to compare and opine about their respective debut albums. But you clearly don’t know what the hell you’re talking about and know nothing about rock and roll if you call Van Halen I pop rock, because that’s an absurd characterization. Also, here’s what Angus said about EVH: “I’d put Eddie Van Halen in that category of being an innovator like Hendrix.” What Angus was talking about in that interview you reference, which was from 1984, was he didn’t view AC/DC and VH as competitors because AC/DC is a blues rock band whereas later VH was more radio-oriented at that time. He wasn’t talking about early VH. Angus and EVH were friends. Learn something before you try and speak next time, dummy.
@sonofrobert
@sonofrobert 3 года назад
I agree that later Van Halen is pop rock. I thought they were better when the were harder earlier. Angus didn't say it like a compliment..lol. I think he was asked what he thought of Halen. Everyone has their taste. Tool, GnR, Acdc would never be called pop rock. Van Halen went for the money and Roth was a pretty annoyingly, ridiculous frontman! Acdc like to be more heavy. Later Halen was pretty much girl rock similar to Poison, Warrant even with Sammy Eddie was a pioneer as a guitarist but he still went for that pop rock sound and the cheesy backing vocals..lol If you like girl pop rock, I won't call you wimp for liking it. Some of us prefer harder music that isn't playing on the radio constantly. If you think Halen's first album is the greatest first album in music history, then I'd say you are in the minority. From Steven Wilson on Eddie's death. “Honestly, it didn’t, because I was never a fan. I know he’s an extraordinary musician, and it’s always sad when an extraordinary artist dies, [but] I was never a fan of the so-called shredder mentality. And I think in many ways, he was the father of that whole kind of movement. “I never understood that ‘playing as fast as you can’ thing. And I know that wasn’t all he did - I know he was a more flexible musician than that - but I think that the legacy that he has, Eddie Van Halen, is in creating the shredder phenomenon, which is something so vile to me. That kind of idea that you play music almost like you’re playing an Olympic sport is kind of anathema to my kind of ideas on creativity and music.” I just saw one where Angus said: "Van Halen is more of a pop band and AC/DC is a rock and roll band." He said it's not really a competition..lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MywssXz4GIg.html I put Halen with Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant. Eddie's guitar and the vocals are pop, radio songs. I like the older Halen that is more heavy, harder but they made alot more pop stuff. Overall Halen, Bon Jovi is like girl pop/rock and was great for radio but when you want heavy, harder rock, Acdc, GnR, Zeppelin, Metallica, Tool, etc. If tons of chicks like your music, you wear lots of spandix and makeup and spend more time in the mirror than women it's probably more pop rock than harder/ heavy rock. ACDC, GnR, Tool, Nirvana, Zeppelin Metallica etc were refreshing because they rocked hard and didn't care very much about how they looked. More like function over form. In the 80s, I was irritated by Poison, Warrant, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Kiss in there too. I appreciated the harder rockin bands where it was more about the music than appearance and how high your hair stood up and putting on more make up than women. Cheers

Man, my heart is heavy today. We lost a true legend on guitar and a member of one of the funnest bands ever live! They sure as hell consumed their share of Jack Daniels onstage! You never knew what you were going to get, with the exception of one thing: stratospheric guitar playing by the incomparable Eddie Van Halen. He is also a true immigrant success story. I come from Pasadena, so Van Halen was mother's milk. I saw him 7 times, and when I see the video of his guitar solo that everyone plays of him on RU-vid, if someone were to ask me whether I saw that solo or not, I have no idea. Every time we saw him, his creativity brought something new. Gentlemen, keep up the great work. Love to his son Wolfgang, his wife Janie, his brother Alex and the Van Halen family. We will not see his likes again!

He tells a funny story of 5 years into piano his teacher finally figured that out. Also he understood music theory. Arpeggios, intervals and scales and such. I would argue that is more important on a guitar than being able to read sheet music or tabs. Eddie was the most influential since Hendrix.

@@RayfordRaySiegel Yeah. I know. That's why I called it a song. Specifically, a "lead-in song" (my own made-up word, because I don't know the technical term; if there is one) to "You Really Got Me"; because about every time a radio station plays "You Really Got Me", they play both songs. Just like "Heartbreaker" and "Livin' Lovin' Maid". Both are their own song; but played together. And not because it's "Two For Tuesday".
@RayfordRaySiegel
@RayfordRaySiegel 4 года назад
@@jbo9150, I just meant that it's not actually a lead in song, but people played it that way, on the radio, just because it was placed in that order, on the album. I always hated that, because it took away from "Eruption". If it were me, on the radio, I would have played it by itself, and it I played "You Really Got Me Now" by itself, too, in order for people to appreciate it, as it is, a separate song.
@jbo9150
@jbo9150 4 года назад
@@RayfordRaySiegel But it's such a let down when they ONLY play "You Really Got Me"; like on Pandora. I had to "thumbs down" because I always want to hear both. (Same as the Led Zep duo).🤷‍♀️ Also, those songs, on their respective albums, don't have a normal gap between songs; they just roll right into the next, making it natural for radio stations to play together. Or maybe because the DJ's were too stoned to cut to the next song; so they always played both. 🤣
