Question of the Day: What is your favorite thing in your camping kitchen?

The Kettle is great. I also have a quality fire starter for my camping cooking.

Our roof tent makes a nice shade so we have a few pull outs and at first I wasn’t going to get those, but I decided that I would because it makes our camp kitchen easier to access so even though it’s not a piece of kitchen pull outs are the best part of our kitchen

I love everything in my travel kitchen bag, and I can’t choose just one favorite, but I think my top 3 are my set of nice metal silverware that has a nice neoprene zippered case, my electric saucepan, and my tiny air fryer. I mostly travel where I’m staying at friends’ homes or hotels, so I can easily use my electric items (including my kettle that is exactly like yours, which I would have to say is my #4 favorite 😂 so extra bonus), however when I finally get a travel van, I think having enough power for these items is completely doable.

My new favourite toy is an arc lighter. It has a long gooseneck handle and is USB chargeable. If the spark on my butane stove ever gives out, I can use it to light it. So far it's only been used for candles. I just bought a larger Woods camp kettle because the one that came with my camping pots and pans is so small that it wobbles on the butane hob. But I'll keep the little one as it'll be good for my emergency stove that's just a frame over a gel alcohol tin. Also, it might fit in my lunchbox cooker, so I could have hot water for tea as well as something warmed up wrapped in tinfoil. Jon in rural BC, Canada

I don’t have a van or RV yet but I’ve been talking about traveling and camping when I retire for years. This is the year we retire. So last Christmas my kids gave us all kinds of cooking gear. Now we just need the vehicle.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
I started stocking up on things that I would be interested in having in my van before I had my van. It’s a good way to envision the space without having to actually have the space yet. And as you start to look at different vehicles, it’ll help you to realize how much space that you actually will be taking up because you already know the things that you want to put inside. I think that’s a great idea.

Just the other day I showed my friend’s son a collapsing 🔌 electric kettle like yours because he travels sometimes for his job & found not all motels have those small coffee maker. Then I showed him my 12v kettle that can heat up to 1 liter of water, and put leftover hot water into a thermos for later use. I also showed him my Dash mini griddle that I make one egg omelets or cook up breakfast sausage links, it’s power draw is 300w.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
Awesome! The kettle itself is something that has really changed the way that I’m able to prepare things, especially during bad weather. All of the different 12 V appliances allow me to be able to cook inside if I am in the middle of a downpour and more often than not. I have pulled those things out to do that very thing. Or if I pull into a campsite, super late, and I don’t wanna pull out my kitchen, because it would leave me exposed as a solo traveler at night or he would let the bugs in. I hope that he enjoyed it and found some motivation because I think it will be super helpful for him.

Our class b van, came with pots pans plates bowls, coffee cups utensils and a drip coffeemaker. The plates bowls and cups were all Corelle and break resistant, but I have broken plenty of that stuff so I took it all out and replaced the dish wear with stainless steel and because the van only has two seatbelts, we only have two place settings. As for the coffee maker, it was replaced with a stainless steel kettle and a ceramic pour over cone. I replaced all the pots and pans with one deep skillet with a lid and pour spout with a strainer on the lid. No plastic dishware for me because it is harder to clean than stainless steel and it can get melted... the silver wear ended up replaced to because it had poor dull knives and clunky handles. We now have two place settings of GSI stainless steel utensils and 2 Toats long handled spoons made of titanium. These changes lightened the Kitchen gear by almost 35 pounds and saved space on the counter and in the cabinets. Judging from the shocks we replaced as soon as we got to homebase the previous owners were over weight with what they carried in the van. You really have your Kitchen dialed in. Thank you for another great video.

I definitely had that issue with my previous skillet that I used my first started out also. I picked up a camping skillet which was super cool because it collapsed down but the problem was everything wanted to stick to it and like yourself I tried everything to get it not to and it just became problematic. I didn’t move to a small skillet but the problem with that was it was so bulky in my space and I felt like I was always having to move it around. That’s why I decided to go for the RidgeMonkey, because it seem to address most of the issues that I was having. Then I just had to wait it out until it actually arrived, which took a while but I can honestly say it was well worth it lol.

Lol also, the bunny scale. It’s gonna be super fun. I may do a video on the Troy 🏀 channel using it or maybe on my tiny home channel because it’s probably going to live at home realistically because of the shape. Just a heads up, be careful with the utensils with silicone ends like your tongs, but this is with all kinds even spatulas. Whether they are made with metal or wood, because they are not completely fused together, over time food and moisture gets under the silicone parts and it begins to mold! Big yuck! 🤢
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
I usually inspect my items pretty well, which is why my old morsel is now no longer being used. Overtime silicone does have the ability to break down so if it does start to break down and disintegrate, I try to replace it.

As you know I’m an aspiring nomad. Last fall I reconnected with an ex from over 20 years ago and have been continuing a friendship. He, too, has been interested in vanlife. I have been aspiring for over 5 years so I’ve got a lot of research in it (I’m a single mom so I can’t just move my kids into a van, but some day I will be there). I happened across an ambulance for sale in one of my nomad groups. It was halfway across the country for me and it just so happened to be in the same metro area he was. He has since bought the ambulance and moved into it and traveled back to the state where we both are from and is camped at a friends land working on his build. This was perfect for me to send to him, thank you!!
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
Very cool I like the idea of an ambulance when it comes to space, but when it comes to the creep factor, it freaks me out lol that’s a personal thing though. I’ve seen so many wonderful conversions, but for some reason I just can’t get rid of the idea of trauma happening inside of it. Lol.

Great video and a great line-up of kitchen gear! I cook with a lot of vegetables and fruit, and am particular about the knives I use. Better knives probably won’t come with a cover/sheath, but you can always get a separate cover. My long-time favorite all-purpose knife is the Global 5.5 inch vegetable knife (it’s a Nakiri-style knife). It’s an investment, but I use it every day and expect to have it forever. A more affordable option is the Sabatier Santoku (5 or 7 inches) - this knife actually comes with a “self-sharpening” blade cover and costs less than $20 on Amazon. For kitchen shears, I highly recommend getting a pair that comes apart for thorough cleaning. We’ve had Kershaw Taskmaster shears for more than 35 years and they’re still going strong!

I’m dying to know what the item you mentioned that you weren’t going to show us is!!! Seriously, I can’t figure it out and I watch regularly. That being said… I have the same exact kettle and absolutely love it! I take it with me whenever I go anywhere. I also ordered some Ridge Monkeys after seeing them on your channel and best by far pans that I own!!! I actually bought 3 different sizes. The two smaller ones I usually keep in my car with my two burner Eureka camp stove (which is Ah-Mayyyy-Zing!!!!). I keep the large one at home to use unless I’m camping with my family. I also keep a set of the 50¢ Walmart plastic dishes in my travel kitchen bag. I have a different style of the reusable ziplock bags, I just love the Stasher bags. They are a little bit pricey, but they last and last forever, they can be boiled or frozen, and even microwaved for when you have access to that. I have all different sizes and use them for storing my fruits, veggies, salads, and micro-greens a lot. I also marinate shrimp and chicken in the Stashers in my cooler or 12 volt fridge. I have never had a problem with them leaking or anything like that. I don’t like to eat with plastic silverware, even good solid camping sets, so I ordered a set of metal silverware that came with fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, and a metal straw in a cute compact little case. I even added a few extra pieces of silverware and a steak knife as well as a tiny vegetable knife that has a cover to it and everything still fits right inside the case, which is about the size of the disposable sets that come with takeout, maybe just a tad bit thicker once it’s full. I actually keep that set in my car console and I use them when I’m out running errands and need to grab a meal or a snack. So handy!!! The collapsible colander and funnel are also in my kitchen bag and I can’t say enough good things about them. I use them all the time. I try to avoid processed foods as much as I possibly can because I have autoimmune diseases that really are exacerbated by any types of dyes, preservatives, or additives of any sort. Because of my dietary needs, I typically eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, so I have to have a colander to wash those. I have a small compact cutting board as well and several good kitchen knives with the covers like you mentioned. Pretty much, I have a very similar travel kitchen to yours. It’s well worth it to be able to prepare and cook meals for myself rather than eating things that are going to make me feel bad and it saves me way more money than I spent on it within a very short period and then lasts for years and years to keep saving money. However, I am a ceramics artist, and I regularly travel with several breakable ceramic mugs because it just makes my tea feel like a special occasion and I am bougee like that. I just wrap them in a kitchen towel and then store them in my kitchen bag where they don’t get shifted around and I don’t have any problems with them being damaged. I actually had a bad car accident with them in my car like that and even though the car was totaled, the ceramics and I emerged completely unharmed. I really think everyone should have at least one handmade ceramic mug, but I might be a bit biased. Btw, two of the mugs I travel with a lot were made by other artists and I paid over $200 each for them, so I’m absolutely confident that they will travel well wrapped and secured as I described or I would never have even chanced it. And before anyone comes at me for spending that on a mug, I’m just going to remind you that this is what I do for my livelihood and it’s par for the course in my career. I’m not suggesting that anyone else should pay that much, you do you. I’m just saying that I have ample reason to be mindful of how I am transporting them and I am still confident in my methods enough to do so.

Great video. Im going on my 1st camping trip as an adult and putting together my camp kitchen. My main thing is deciding if i need an electric cooler or just the regular one, also what size. I am going to use the cooler i have for the 1st trip and then I'll see from there if i need something different.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
I started off with a regular ice chest, where I could put ice in it just to see if I would actually use the item frequently enough to justify the purchase of a cooler or a refrigerator. I noticed that I did in fact, enjoy having it, but using an ice chest led to a few problems. I tried dry bags so that I could keep my produce from getting super damp as the ice melted and that didn’t quite address the issue for me personally so that’s why I moved to a refrigerator. Now with a refrigerator you do have to have a power source and so that is another thing to think of when planning your refrigeration unit. it really depends on what your personal needs are on how you’re able to determine what will work best for you. For example, some people really want some thing that is tall enough to be able to put a 2 L soda in my previous refrigerator actually was large enough for a 2 L soda to stand in. However, I noticed that I wasn’t carrying a lot of very tall items and a fridge of that size became a little overwhelming for what it was that I used it for personally so I downsized whenever I revamped my van into a smaller unit and determined that that was something that was a better suit for my personal shopping habits.

@BunnyPlaysHere thanks for the reply. I am looking into power stations trying to figure out which one best suits my needs. Hard decision. My current cooler uses the ice pack, and I'm also preprepping and freezing my meals. 1st trip is just 1 night, so I'll be good.

@@DebbieRay64 I’ve used a cooler with ice for more than 40 years and a year & a half ago I upgraded to a 25qt fridge that runs on 12v. I am a firm believer in start with what you have. Then, very slowly upgrade. The last 5+ years of using a cooler as an effort to rescue food from swimming in melted ice at the bottom of cooler I tried using those blue ice chiller thingies, but found more success in using frozen water bottles. I’m switching from camping to full time minivan life in two weeks, and am refining my kitchen setup-choosing between my long-used camping pans (lightweight, but so familiar!) vs my good pots and pans, a collection refined and perfected over the years. How often will I need to cook for more than one? Will my kids join me, or will I join a group and share meals? Don’t know! I’m sure I will be dropping off stuff at GoodWill soon. Since I splurged on a power station and fridge/freezer, I’m also bringing a tiny rice cooker and a tiny waffle iron, and got a HotLogic for casseroles (hurray for midwestern roots!). My drip cone for coffee rounds out the collection.

@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
I’m not exactly sure how long a single canister lasts are usually can cook numerous meals with a single canister, and some of those meals require me to have the heat on for longer and some require less. I’ve never really just tried to burn one completely out and see how long it would go because there’s a lot of variables to that on high it will clearly burn out more butane than it would on low and typically I personally cook on a lower setting based on my personal cooker being so hot. However, I know a lot of people who have to use theirs on the full hi setting in order to cook food that is similar to mine. A lot of it does have to do with not only what you’re cooking, but how you’re cooking and also what kind of Skillet or pan you’re using. The RidgeMonkey creates a heat pocket which cook my food faster so lower heat works better.

How is your rooftop box holding up. Would you recommend it.

I am loving my roof box. It has definitely been holding up even in all of the crazy weather that I’ve gone through. I’ve been very impressed and I would definitely recommend this one.

As for the kettle warming can't I just plug it into my Jeep plug and run the jeep till it boils rather than using the power station?

It was a lot of power, so a lot of regular vehicles do not have the capacity to run it without blowing a fuse. You never want to overload your fuses because that could be problematic. That’s why I always show these kinds of items on power stations so people can see what the draw is

How do you wash your dishes? I've heard people just spray vinegar water?
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere Год назад
I actually have a pop out sink and use good old soap and water. I try to use soap that is environmentally friendly however, I don’t personally like vinegar as a whole so I don’t use it very often in my vehicle.

I'm sorry I don't see any links to the items you showed?

In the description of the video, there is a section that says looking for something in my van and then it has an Amazon link for all of the different items in my van
